Sometimes A Picture Is Not Worth A Thousand Words, The Return of the Gray Colors, installation view, University of Miami studio, fourteen erased photographs, utensils, Miami, Florida, variable dimensions, April 25th, 2017-2024. The Return of the Gray Colors, emerges from a deeply rooted concern for the intersection of political repression and artistic expression, particularly within the context of Cuba's history and contemporary struggles for creative freedom. Inspired by the period known as the "Quinquenio Gris” or “Grey Quinquennium, " a five-year stretch of intense censorship and suppression of dissenting voices under a political regime from 1971 to 1976, this series serves as a poignant reflection on the enduring impact of authoritarian policies on cultural vitality. The project is not merely a historical reflection but also a response to contemporary challenges facing artists in Cuba, notably the implementation of Decree 349 in 2018. Drawing upon archival materials, including erased photographs from documentary projects and assignments spanning previous years, I employ a bleaching process to strip these images from their emulsion. The resulting ghostly remnants are then arranged in a grid formation and juxtaposed alongside liquid emulsion contained within small glass containers.
