☘️ Behind the scenes of Bonanza: Little Joe/Mike Landon working as a director. 📽️🎥💛 In 1968, Mike started directing with a Bonanza episode, "To Die in Darkness", Season 9, E 28. He was only 32 at the time! 😍👌 This episode with a focus on Pa and Candy and many layers of human and family relationship, philosophy of life, hope and conscience, is a very favorite of mine! Through the years of working on Bonanza, Michael worked on his skills and knowledge of directing in addition to writing. He was the co-writer of this brilliant episode with David Dortort and Fred Hamilton. I'm not sure if this photo is from the episode I mentioned. But I love this episode which also highlights Mike's brilliant and ambitious style of directing so early in his career. "I really never knew my father until about a year before he died because he moved in with me and lived out the last year of his life at my house", Michael says to some of the crew members and he adds, "it was really too late for us to become close, like a father and son should be." Mike's father Eli, died a bit before starting Bonanza, when Mike was shooting the Tom Dooley movie. ☘️ Our two handsome boys 💙🩵 Michael and Lorne were so close to each other, but the interesting fact is they were as different in many personal characteristics as they were close. Part of it may be because they were from two different generations and also the experiences that they had early in life. Mike barely kept his words inside him, even if he had to argue with others. Lorne was somewhat reticent and took inside when he was coping with something. Both were brave in keeping strength and perseverance with any difficulty they had to go through. I'll post more about them in the future. Now about my choice of these photos which I find attractive, I wanted to say about their difference in dressing habits. Mike was very casual, even in the era that seems formal compared to today's standards! You don't see him in suit too much, esp in the shows he felt more intimate with. At home, he even preferred being shirtless and comfy to goof around and he mentioned he didn't feel comfy when they had housekeepers around over the meals, because then had to keep proper clothing and manners and couldn't argue with wife much because it would be in tabloids the next day! lol He was a man of his natural instincts I would say. Often rebellious and wanted to be free.😁 Lorne, on the other hand, always dressed up and I would say he had a dashing taste, too. Never boring as you might expect of an older generation. Indeed, he was very classy and would always attract attention and respect with his dressing habits just as his voice; a true gentleman and his presence would fill the space with respect. This was even before he became a star. When he was in Canada had to be in the army for a while, he was surprised that he would receive salutes from soldiers in the streets although he was still a Private. It turned out that the lower ranks didn't have the habit of shining their buttons, so they confused him with officers of higher ranks. Private Greene was so well-groomed and nicely shined with buttons of his uniform as a habit that caused confusion! ☺️ I think you can tell Pa's habits of being neat and shiny in Bonanza, dealing with his disobedient boys every now and then! 😉

☘️ Lovely Lorne Greene aka Commander Adama and Maren Jensen aka Lieutenant Athena, Adama's daughter, in the TV series Battlestar Galactica (1978-1980). How many times have you seen Lorne embracing a daughter on screen? I think the only chance they gave him was Galactica! And he is as sweet and warm as he was to his boys for so many years! So I love his moments like this photo 💕 Battlestar Galactica is the most famous series of Lorne after Bonanza and it has some similarities. Although it's a science fiction thriller, it has a family and humanity themed base and the characterizations are great. Lorne is the leader and the most dependable character which perfectly suits him, but he is also the best father! Again no wife and he has a daughter and a son who are both single at the time. At the time of its running, many viewers described it as a "Bonanza in space"! It's yes and no. But one thing unique to me in terms of Lorne's role is that he has a daughter for the first time in all the series I have seen of him! That is something I regret we didn't see in most of Lorne's roles and even in this series, it seems that his son (Richard Hatch) has a more leading role and the development of the father-daughter relationship could be more intense in my opinion. I like to see this less known side of him. In real life, Lorne was so close to his daughters especially the first one. I haven't seen all episodes of Galactica completely, but mostly searched for Lorne's parts and it seemed that the father-son relationship was again in the center. All his children are warriors, so it's a bit more serious family than the Cartwrights. But in general, it's better not to be seen in comparison to Bonanza, which almost chased Lorne for the rest of his career, and heavy load on his breathing of new characters. ☘️ A rare photo from behind the scenes of Bonanza. I like this photo for two reasons: 1. It shows behind the camera and the angle that we never see--that is from the actors' point of view. Gee, if I had to have all those lights into my eyes all the time I would have had constant headaches and bad mood! If you have ever been in a theatrical studio, you know that there is lots of visual contrast between the lit up sides and the normal--which is indeed absolute dark in a studio. So it's not normal daylight there. And it causes nervous, visual and physical exhaustion for the team, especially the main cast. Not to mention all those technical staff who are climbing there all day, to give us a good shot of the lovely house. 2. I like how everyone is doing and being what their character normally is, although the photo seems to have been taken between the takes! Lorne is neat and attentive, giving full attention to some people, as Pa always does!☺️ Mike is being his comfy casual self, resting his feet on the table as Joe does while Pa tells him NOT to! 😂 and Pernell is bored, finding something to NOT care about and smirk at, just like Adam would, lol 😏 Hop Sing seems puzzled like always. 🤣 Anyways, I found some fun in this photo and thought to share it. ☘️ 64 years ago today (September 12, 1959), Bonanza premiered on TV. It had a shaky start, but they improved it and made history! More than half a century later, Bonanza is still endeared among the third and fourth generations of fans worldwide! Thanks to the amazing cast and the production team who made it possible and to the excellent revival team who kept releasing this gem and made it available, finally in complete format this year!! And very deep thanks to Lorne Greene ( Pa Cartwright) who could see what was needed for the Characters of the Cartwright family and the identity of the show to be about love, loyalty, friendship, peace, and hospitality, rather than dry gunmanship and half-cooked tragedies which were dominantly the TV Westerns' style at the time. He stood for his opinion of change and refinement regarding this show and it's philosophy and purpose. Lorne made the Cartwrights' values the value of a decent, peaceful and compassionate world. ☘️ I dearly love this photo of Lorne Greene! 🥹💕 In an interview Mitch Vogel (Jamie Cartwright of Bonanza) says, "Lorne Greene was a perfect father. Not only was he a good Ben Cartwright, but he was kind of the father of Everybody! He was the father of the set, you know everybody looked up to him like that! " Mitch also explains that as a child he had no father around and his mom was single parenting. So being in the show was like having a family besides a job. He felt them as his own family. This is something we hear from Mike Landon too, who also came from a broken family and found refuge in that emotional shelter, especially made by Lorne. ☘️ A cute photo of them that seems to have been taken spontaneously and without preparation! 😍 Apparently the Cartwrights are so amused with their producer, David Dortort! Pa seems to be overjoyed! 🥰 I think the best thing about Dortort besides his choice of actors for the series, was how democratically recepient he was to the advices and accepting others' opinions. The two most important things that happened in favor of saving the show were these two insistanace by my two favorite men, Lorne and Mike: 1. Not long after beginning the first season, Lorne couldn't stand the poor quality of the writings and characterizations. So he was begging to get out but again as a last chance, he tried to gather and give his substantial and ample suggestions and corrections for the show to be with family, love, compassion, and friendship in the center and making the Cartwrights more lovable, helpful and warm characters. Dortort accepted! The show and characters got better and better and they relied on consulting the scripts and lines with Lorne. His opinions mattered to everyone! 2. After a few seasons, Michael got more and more interested in writing scripts and he pushed Dortort to give him a chance. It was difficult with Michael's amateur background, but Dortort was well-receiving and after a few more seasons and so much learning behind the camera, Michael even pushed on beginning to direct! Again Dortort gave up to his insistanace and let Michael direct and this was how the genius was born to make successful shows for three decades! My father wasn't a big man but he gave the impression of bigness, and that's what I've tried to do, combine authority with kindness" ~Lorne Greene, circa 1984 ✨ If you think the Lorne Greene whom we know as Pa Ben Cartwright was a decent, gentle, polite and no-trouble-maker boy in childhood, you are absolutely right! Since his early years, he was a boy of respect and intellect. He was a thinker, quick-learner, and very observant and aware of his surroundings. Lorne had a secure childhood, but it didn't come easy. His parents were from the Jewish community--in today Belarus--under the severe horror and poverty by the Czarist Russia. After marriage, they immigrated to Ottawa, Canada, with hopes for a better life. Lorne had an older brother who died of influenza (Spanish flu) at the age of 5, when Lorne was only 3. His death was devestating, especially for Lorne's mom. She grieved deeply, and even vowed that she could never love another child as much as she loved her first. Of course, Lorne was already there, and he remained the only child of the Greene's. Now, if we have admiration for Ben Cartwright as a true father figure--which I think we already agree upon, it significantly comes from Lorne's upbringing at home, his observations, relationships, experiences, the development of his parents' image, and his own solid personality. ✨Ben Cartwright was indeed a creation by Lorne Greene, rather than the Bonanza producers and writers. This makes us even more related to our little Lorne's home and folks. Lorne's father was a very very quiet individual and a good listener, with honorable work ethics. And his mother was a combination of voluble and fierce activism. Lorne had a warm childhood home, opposite to the pain and desperation that he later on experienced in his own first marriage. I'll write more about these and the many stages of Lorne's life and works. This song is a dynamic one, very catchy, written by Merle Travis about the life of coal miners in Kentucky, released in 1947. ☘️ Little Joe on the cover of the German magazine, Bravo. Date of release: July 1st, 1966 You probably know that Bonanza was a big hit in Germany from its early days of broadcast and the cast of Bonanza even addressed their German audience among a few others in one of the promotional trailers where if I remember correctly, Pa speaks a few words of German, Hoss in Spanish, and Little Joe in Japanese (what a surprise!) as their spread of gratitude to their international audiences. This trailer is included in the bonus features of the Bonanza dvds. Interestingly enough, Lorne in fact knew and could speak German language which was one of his countless trades including being fluent in French, some Spanish and probably Russian. He did many accents wonderfully and even comically in those years of presenting Bonanza on the invited shows and a few of them can be found on Bonanza dvds. ✨✨ Trivia: This photo of Little Joe seems to have been rotated for the cover of magazine since his cheek's scar is on the wrong side. He had received a bad accidental cut on the set of Tom Dooley movie which was just before Bonanza and he had to do a surgery for the scar. Needless to say what a melodramatic time it was for him to cope with the uncertainty of how a bad scar would effect his young career. He mentioned that he thought "his career was gone even before it began." Finally, a pale touch of the scar remained with him forever, but I like it, to be honest. It's a cute mark in my opinion and makes his face more human, not a doll. But of course I hate to think how painful it must have been to happen and to go through both physically and mentally. It was a real and very sharp professional knife that was supposed to cut the rope by the other actor while Mike's character was struggling with him. Mike says, the knife was so sharp that it went through the rope like butter and before I knew, it had gone through my face! That is one of the dangers of doing your own stunts like Mike did, but the fact that the film maker's crew didn't consider using fake knives in a Western is really a pity and unprofessional! I'm glad it didn't cost more on the 'coming to rise' Little Joe! 💕💕💕

🥳Happy Birthday to me! Hey all! I had a surprise delivery from the Panderosa! 🥹🥹😍😍💝 🎉 So yesterday was my birthday and my younger, one and only sister surprised me from another city (she moved very far from me last year for her new job) with this beautiful and yummy birthday cake and a very very lovely rare (and expensive) Bonanza gift! I am going to do a separate post on my Bonanza birthday gift because it deserves it with all its delicate beauty and my sister's long time planning and arranging for it to come out this way! My sis and I used to live in the same building and everytime she came for lunch or dinner, she watched a Bonanza episode with me and she loved it and especially Mike/Little Joe! She has become a big fan of him and Bonanza (and later on, Little House) over the past months! She keeps me updated on the new episodes that she has watched every week! 🎁 And yesterday for my birthday, we watched the episode "The Gift" online together, because it has some of my top favorite scenes of Joe and Pa's love for each other. It's such a meaningfull episode, and especially because it's the very first Bonanza episode I showed to my sister which also stole her heart on this family and warm-hearted TV series! Yesterday we had a wonderful time with my sis and the Cartwright family as it coincided with Pa's birthday from The Gift! 😉🥹🥰 The cake is so delicious and I wish I could share it with you all and my sister!
