This week I had an Epic Adventure chasing trophy trout in some good water! With the ice pealing back and spawn starting, the males were biting aggressively. The lure of choice like always was Dynamic Lures HD Trout Ghost Rainbow. Thanks @dynamicluresofficial for always getting the job done 🤙🏽 This fish definitely had someone’s ice jog and line wrapped around her. I got it off and released her better than she was! 25in 7lb Rainbow released was the biggest fish of the day. Many other 4-5lb 22-24inchers. I did throw a Trout Trap White Tube Jig to nab a couple of them, mostly to mix it up and use a lighter rod. Epic day! Beat my PB! Couldn’t ask for anything more! . Well, #hexhatch 2022 is in the books for me and pops. This was my second year fishing the hatch and it continued to be a challenging, frustrating and humbling experience. We had the boat this year as we though the electronics would help as well as being able to troll or anchor. The first night there was a pretty decent hatch but not much action. We were anchored at one spot and marking fish but didn’t get any bites and only saw a couple boats catch fish. Luckily we ran into one of those boats at the ramp and got some Intel. The second night we went back to the same spot and put that Intel to use. Again marking tons of fish but not getting any bites. Only this time everyone around use was catching fish. Pop and i were changing leaders and flies until finally at the end of the night we got a couple bites. Then pop hooked a big rainbow that jumped three times then wrapped the line on the trolling motor and broke off. Turns out the rest of our group had gone to a different spot that night and slayed. So we were feeling pretty down. So the third night we linked back up with our group and put to work two nights of Intel and I managed to hook this nice rainbow. Of course once i hooked it my slip bobber decided to tie a knot in itself instead of slip so I had to hand line it in half of the way in. Luckily pop was there with the net so we got the fish, got the picture and got the release. One fish, two years in the making, made it all worth it. After camping on the Sims Mesa on Navajo Lake, we made our way back to fish the San Juan. Tried fishing in the Rio Grande today but the winds were making it near impossible for me. So Thaddeus and I called an audible and made our way back to the Chama. Caught and released 15 today and caught 1 beast that measured in at 15.5" long with a 9" girth. According to a fish scale app it was a 1.4 lb fish that makes it my current PB rainbow trout. Before the snow hits this next week, Thaddeus and I took a trip up to the Taos Canyon to fish the Rio Grande again. It was another gorgeous day to spend there. Caught my new personal best rainbow trout 16" and 1.28 lbs. Plus 2 new species, a Sonora Sucker and 2 baby Brown trout. As we headed back home, we made a few stops to try other spots and caught a small mouth bass and ran into some Big Horn sheep.
