Pakistan is set to embark on a ground-breaking lunar mission, as the country's historic ICUBE-Q satellite prepares for launch on Friday. The satellite will be carried aboard China's Chang'E6 spacecraft, scheduled to depart from Hainan, China, at 1250 PST. According to the Institute of Space Technology (IST), the satellite ICUBE-Q has been designed and developed by IST in collaboration with Chinaโs Shanghai University SJTU and Pakistanโs national space agency SUPARCO. ICUBE-Q orbiter carries two optical cameras to image the lunar surface. Following successful qualification and testing, ICUBE-Q has now been integrated with the Changโe6 mission. KARACHI โ Two young siblings, aged six and eight, abducted at gunpoint from their school vehicle in the Federal B Area, were freed by their captors near Two-Minute Chowrangi in North Karachi. The culprits, in a car, intercepted the school transport and seized 8-year-old Muhammad Abdullah and 6-year-old Muhammad Ibrahim at gunpoint in Federal B Area Block 19 Al-Noor Society, under Samanabad police jurisdiction on Tuesday morning. The assailants also took the driverโs mobile phone and fled. They contacted the childrenโs parents using the driverโs phone, demanding a ransom of Rs15 million and warned of severe repercussions if the payment was not made. The driver quickly notified the families of the missing children. The parents of the kidnapped youngsters went to the Samanabad police station and lodged a complaint against the unidentified kidnappers. The complaint was filed by the childrenโs father, Kashif Ahmed Niazi, leading to a police inquiry that considered various angles of the kidnapping event. Simultaneously, the kidnappers released the young brothers near Two-Minute Chowrangi in North Karachi and vanished. The abducted children managed to take a rickshaw home. Subsequently, the children were taken to the SSP Central office. Successful species hunt. Wifey @livia_cortney and I went out to the Saint Pete pier today to try and get an orange filefish. I monitor fishbrain postings somewhat and noticed an influx of a couple orange filefish being caught in this narrow crowded area where youโre allowed to fish on this one pier. With the wind blowing up to 20 constantly I didnโt have much motivation to try anything else, so off we went. A surprise triathlon in the morning had completely blocked off all of the waterfront areas in downtown St. Pete forcing us to go home and to come back in the afternoon. With almost zero motivation we dragged ourselves back out to fight the crowded downtown areas and it was worth it. Lost a couple filefish at first but eventually landed two beautiful and peculiar Orange Filefish (species 394) but not before getting a surprise second species, the Sheepeshead Porgy (species 393). What I thought was a pretty rare porgy turned out to be somewhat common here. Another surprise was how many Scrawled Cowfish were out there. These guys, working together with pinfish, made it very challenging to keep a bait on the hook. It has a superficial resemblance to the northern hemisphere species Diderma subincarnatum, but there are substantial differences such as its size (it is larger) and substrateโ it occurs on wood, not litter. Paleontologists in Argentina have announced the discovery of a new medium-sized herbivorous dinosaur named Chakisaurus nekul, which lived approximately 90 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous period in what is now present-day Patagonia. The dinosaur was unearthed in the Pueblo Blanco Natural Reserve in the southern province of Rรญo Negro, an area renowned for its rich fossil record. Chakisaurus nekul is estimated to have reached 2.5 to 3 meters in length and about 70 centimeters in height (8 to 10 feet long and 27 inches high). Notable for its speed and agility, this bipedal herbivore had a unique tail curved downward, unlike most dinosaurs with horizontal tails. Researchers believe that Chakisaurus nekul's speed helped it evade predators in its habitat. The dinosaur's name comes from indigenous Tehuelche and Mapuche languages, reflecting the local culture and its fast running abilities. --- NEW SPECIES --- I am ecstatic to announce the description of a new species of Kukri Snake to southern Thailand: Oligodon speleoserpens, the Cave Kukri Snake. This is the first species description I have been a part of and feel very honoured to have discovered this species alongside so many great colleagues. And it's most amazing to be a new Oligodon, a genus often disregarded by many but very close to my heart. O. speleoserpens is endemic to the limestone karst mountains of Southern Trang and Satun in peninsula Thailand. It is especially adapted to life in this harsh environment, with strongly keeled ventral scales enabling it to climb vertical rock faces. Its name comes from the holotype being found in a limestone cave. Last year @rupertsreptiles and myself embarked on an expedition to specifically target undescribed Vipers and Kukris in Thailand's Southern Karst. Although we failed to encounter the recently described T. cillaris our efforts resulted in this extraordinary encounter making the whole expedition a resounding success. The individual pictured, that Rupert and myself caught, was found ~12-15m up a cliff face. This was incredibly risky but I had no option but to free solo (climbing talk for no ropes) as I knew the importance of this snake and was not going to let it escape us under any circumstance. Oligodon is one of South-East Asiaโs most diverse genera with many novel species still waiting to be discovered. O. speleoserpens forms part of the O. cinereus complex, an extremely rare clade of Kukri Snakes and thus so much remains unknown about them.
