Well, it’s my favorite time of the year! My roses are putting on a glorious show this year! The thunderstorms pelted them pretty hard, but there are so many more blooms yet to open. I wish you could smell them… For anyone curious, there are two varieties of roses. Albertine, which is an antique rose that only blooms once per year and New Dawn that is a repeat bloomer. There are 4 bushes total, 2 of each and they have been planted along my chain link fence for about 15 years. They give me so much joy! #petalsfromthepast #antiqueroses

I popped by this little gem of a garden earlier in the summer. It’s actually a home set smack dab in the middle of a Japanese maple shade garden, a perennial and heavy on the dahlia cutting garden, a formal garden at the entry, pollarded tree form hollies along the back perimeter, and a lovely/quirky crabapple tree. There is not a space on this property that has not been considered and intentionally cultivated. I love properties that have Soul! Similar to the interior of a home, a garden with soul is created over years…it is collected…layering textures/colors, found pieces, and a variety of plant material… But that is not enough… it needs an owner who notices and takes chances…who tends the space. And this one has a professional gardener, Ben Head, tending to it many hours each week. And Landscape Services and A & B Tree Services to do the heavy lifting. Yes, it is an investment, a space like this. It is a group effort. But, I knew this couple… And convenient parking was not as important as having a tucked in quiet space to tend and enjoy. I visit often… The home of Chuck and Jane Boswell. Two people who have nurtured their garden… year after year…this unpretentious space full of a wild variety of plants. We lost Jane last year…a beloved 2nd mother to me, a mentor. And when I visit this garden and walk it with Chuck, I feel her presence. I feel the beauty she created. And as Chuck has adjusted to this new quiet life, it is clear that his attentions have turned even more so to nurturing growing things.
