Aaaaand that’s a wrap for @womenshomesteadsociety ‘s 2024 conference!!!! This morning @themiller_homestead and @toupsandcoorganics were both holding babies just younger than Nat, and I realized all three of us were pregnant last Conference at the same time. Nat and Kyle were around all day making people smile for various reasons- Nat with his adorable happiness and Kyle with his kilt. While sales definitely help pay the bills and make appearances at these events possible, the best and main part for me is all the friendships, connections and networking that happens. This event is so well done and the culture and community it has fostered are definitely my people. I’m so thankful to Angela for putting this conference on - even during seasons of loss, or pregnancy, or new little babies being toted around. I can’t wait for next year’s conference and am excited to see how the Lord waters the seeds of friendships that were planted this year. A super productive day in the garden today! Inspired by @rootsallotments @marfskitchengarden and a tonne of #homesteaders and #gardening enthusiasts I decided to transform some of my very small inner city garden into my own #allotment. It started as you see it and finished really well about 5 photos along. I also planted potatoes separately and have more seeds in a cold frame. 12 trees planted! Last evening we planted 4 peach, 4 pawpaw, 2 dogwoods, and 2 hazelnuts. We really enjoy planting trees on our homestead. Especially trees that can provide a resource like a fruit or a nut. There are 62 species of trees common to Pennsylvania, and we want one of each on our homestead (probably more like two of each)! $250 Hoop House / Coop With upcycled wood pallets & lumber, donated old doors, hardware cloth, hog panels, chicken wire, nails, and greenhouse plastic we built a structure that is half garden / half coop and it even withstood a once in a lifetime blizzard with 8 feet of snow! We’ve been using this structure for 4 years now and we just added an extra piece of greenhouse plastic this year. We could have waited and just patched it but it snows where we live and didn’t want to take the risk of it ripping under pressure. Recommendations: Make sure to use a spring hinge door on the inside. (I’ve lost several gardens to my chickens eating them if someone doesn’t close the door 🤬! And don’t skimp on the hardware cloth. You need the small gauge to prevent mice and rodents. The Model N Ford would have been too pretentious at a church social, he thought as he hurried out to his newest possession. He had purchased the car on a whim in Denver. Since he had found nothing he liked locally, he had traveled to the city to see what top-notch breeding stock might be available. Jim also had no aversion to a nice dinner as a lone, handsome family man in the city. He was partial to a roast leg of lamb with mint sauce and a full Bordeaux. Something Flora refused to countenance. First, she was a tee-totaling Methodist, and lambs were for wool. Flora knew nothing about the Model N either—another item on the long list. As he approached the iron mailbox at the turnoff to the main road, he saw old man Higgins had already been by in his square mail cart. Jim leaned down from the high car seat and reached into the “cursed” iron box. To establish an official U.S. mail route, everyone had to agree to buy an official mailbox. But Old Henkelmann Sr. refused to pay a one-time payment of $2.50 for a “damn cur-sëd ugly iron contraption” when he had a beautiful mailbox hand-painted by his late wife. He held up the route for three months. Henkelmann was right. The iron box was ugly and already rusting around the flag. Jim opened it to find a letter from Flora. Boldly written on the back: “Don’t open in front of the boys.” It was not one of her long, gossipy narratives. Short was personal. Personal was dangerous. Most people know I love to barter and trade goods. I always trade eggs for things. But for people I know, I give my eggs for free. So I was super surprised when my neighbor came to get his eggs and he had a cheese cake to “trade”. He makes the best cheese cake we have ever had and doesn’t hesitate to surprise us with it, but seriously this has been the best trade for eggs so far! He also gardens. So what exactly happens when you cook with RAW dairy? Research and planning is important to reach your hobby farm goals. ~ There I just made all my researchers happy, you're welcome.~ ➡️ But pay close attention to the breeds or species of the project you are researching and make sure it was intended to serve the purpose you are looking for. It wouldn't make much sense to raise Tans or Belgin Hairs (they are super skinny breeds) if you are looking to raise meat rabbits. Sure you can eat any breed but some are not going to produce as well as other breeds could. See what I mean? In the same turn going for the biggest breed isn't always the best choice either because they take 3 times as long to get to the size needed to be worth eating. Some crops may thrive in your environment, while others might struggle. While yes we are not trying to start a hobby farm for profit the saying "cute doesn't pay the bills" still fits here but could sound more like "cute doesn't hit the goals". Research isn't important just to be able to say you know things.
