Another traumatic birth here at The Moon Bottom. If it was easy, everyone would do it! Thank goodness calving season is over for us! Last cow went into labor yesterday, within an hour, upon the advice of our neighbors, we were told to go ahead and pull the calf. This calf was so different from the other. No machinery needed to get him out, just a little extra muscle for the 1st time mom. Calf came out, but unfortunately, so did her uterus. We called the vet who told us to decide if we wanted to terminate mom, or try to repair her. We decided to save her as you see in the picture. She was quickly put back together. She was given antibiotics and painkillers. Mom and baby are doing great. Baby is up, playing and frisky. He nurses like a champ and mom seems to be healing well. This calving season was not easy on us. We learned so much. Big prayers for a less eventful season next year! #homesteading #cows #calvingseason #noteasy #gladthatsover

I know I just introduced some new rabbits the other day, but I picked up a few more for our breeding program! These beauties are Silver Fox rabbits, which is a meat breed that is also well known for their high quality pelts. They are born in one of 4 base colors - black, blue, lilac & chocolate (white is also a more rare possibility) - and as they grow they begin silvering which creates their unique interwoven colored coat. This breed is known to be calm and friendly, making great breeding or meat 4-H projects for kiddos! On the south side of the old family farm house I now have four 36-foot garden beds and an apple orchard consisting of sixteen apple trees, each one a different kind. This picture shows the north side. It's still a work in progress. Ultimately there will be four garden beds to match the south side and an orchard of sixteen pear trees, each one a different kind. The garden bed covered with white fabric in this picture is a bed of strawberries I planted last year and have protected from the deer. I will be planting blueberries and rasberries this year as well. Happy birthday little beets! I don’t like beets, at least that’s what I always say. The truth is I had them once when I was probably seven and never again since. My Pop-Pop used to like them and I remember my mom making them for him. Now that I’m older and more mature in my thinking, I realize that my pallet has probably changed since then and I also realize I never really gave them a fair chance. This year I decided to try two different kinds, one of them is this golden beet from Baker Creek seeds. One of my favorite ways to use up that leftover soup! Whether there's just a little bit left, or you're tired of having it for another meal... I simply add eggs - in my case, ones that happened to have a crack, when I collected... Then, I add roughly 1/2 cup of flour per egg, and until you get the correct consistency of a fluffy pancake batter... Lastly, I add 1 tsp of baking powder per cup of flour I felt I needed. If you didn't have a creamy soup, add a bit of milk, if you so desire. Cook them up, just like you would flapjacks. Voila! #savorypancakes for a Saturday morning #brunch - fabulous on their own, or topped with hot sauce or salsa too! There's no need for sweet syrups or jam, and satisfies everyone's needs. Plus, nothing goes to waste either.
