America and Asia and half of those are found here in the Rockies! Hard to distinguish varieties. Their little flowers look and smell similar to lilacs (totally in bloom right now!), but have absolutely no relation. Yes they are quite fragrant, but one must get down on their hands and knees to smell these short flowers, immediately becoming vulnerable to grizzly bear attacks.
