August // Oregon Grape Jam // parking lot Zurich Altstetten . I never realized, growing up in Oregon all those years, that this spiky Holly lookalike had berries that were edible! . While I was picking them, a woman warned me "nicht essbar!" (not edible!), "doch, doch" I said. They are edible if you cook them down and remove the seed inside, which has poisonous properties. . The remaining sour liquid solidifies into a tart and flavourful jam when mixed with sugar and boiled. . Total processing time from gather to jam, 3 hours. . What else can this parking lot yield?? . #eatyourneighborhood #foragedfoods #eatlocal #localfood #forage #oregongrape #berberisaquifolium

A Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla) munches some flowers of Tall Oregon Grape (Mahonia/Berberis aquifolium) at Fernhill Wetlands. Fun fact: despite being a thoroughly well loved plant and official state flower here in Oregon where it's native, Oregon Grape is an invasive species in other parts of the world. In addition to it's native range in Western North America, it's been introduced to Eastern North America, Europe, New Zealand, and more. It may also be referred to as Creeping Mahonia, Holly-leaved Barberry, Mountain Grape, Oregon Grapeholly, Oregon Holly, Oregon Hollygrape, or Tall Mahonia. #nature #naturephotography #animal #animalphotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #bird #birdphotography #aves #passeriformes #passerine #songbird #perchingbird# passerellidae #zonotrichia #zonotrichiaatricapilla #sparrow #newworldsparrows #goldencrownedsparrow #oregongrape #talloregongrape #mahonia #mahoniaaquifolium #berberis #berberisaquifolium

We recommend getting your face up close and personal with Oregon grape, a.k.a. Mahonia aquifolium, Oregon’s state flower! The yellow blossoms of this species are starting to open, and they’re one of the best scents of the season. Bee buddies like them, too, so keep your eyes peeled for some early spring buzzing nearby. 🐝🩷 When folks talk about using Oregon grape medicinally, they’re usually referring to the stems, the stem bark, or the rhizomes (the underground stems), though some may casually refer to it as “Oregon grape root.” This remedy has a host of applications, from liver stimulant to bitter digestive support to antimicrobial wound care. A mid-sized, evergreen shrub, Oregon grape is a fabulously resilient and handsome native plant for landscaping. And the pollinators appreciate it! #oregongrape #oregongrapeflowers #mahoniaaquifolium #mahonia #berberisaquifolium #oregonflora #oregonflowers #pnwnativeplants #pnwnativeflowers #backyardhabitat #liverherbs #digestiveherbs #antimicrobialherbs #stopandsmelltheflowers

More native/weed lookalikes! Today we have Oregon-grape and English holly. Another pair that weed control crews sometimes have trouble distinguishing. Oregon-grape, in the first shot, has compound leaves which means that it has around 9 leaflets that look like holly leaves, attached to a central stem, which attaches to the branch, with a bud at the base for next year's leaf. Phew. Also large clusters of yellow flowers followed by grape-like berries. Tall Oregon-grape needs some sun, but Low Oregon-grape grows in the forest understory. Holly, second shot, has leaves that are not compound - there's a leaf bud at the base of every one. And individual white flowers followed by red berries. They even both have the same species name in latin, "aquifolium" meaning holly-leaf. Both are useful for screening, being evergreen, but the holly is a horrendous weed of intact forests, germinating and growing just fine in dry shade. #washingtonnativeplants #nativeplantsofnorthamerica #pnwnativeplants #pnwwonderland #nationalinvasivespeciesawarenessweek2024 #oregongrape #talloregongrape #mahoniaaquifolium #berberisaquifolium #englishholly #holly #ilexaquifolium

The Tall Oregon Grape (Berberis aquifolium) that I planted in October 2021 and then divided and transplanted to a better location last fall has its first buds. I guess that it's happy in its new location in my pocket forest. Tall Oregon Grape is one of the early native bloomers, providing nectar for hummingbirds and early pollinators as well as attracting beneficial insects that make up the majority of a hummingbird's diet. In addition, it supports birds with its blue berries and provides shelter for wildlife. I like the berries as well and use them to make jelly. This species is on the Portland Plant List and is locally native to my area. It's a versatile shrub because it tolerates full sun to full shade and moist to dry soil. It grows 5 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 8 feet tall. It can be used as a hedge row. Associates include sword fern, fir, hemlock, spruce, aspen, osoberry, vine maple, oceanspray, rhododendron, serviceberry, salal, and red columbine. #talloregongrape #berberisaquifolium #mahoniaaquifolium #marchflowers #portlandplantlist #nativeoregonplants #pnwplants #backyardhabitat #earlybloomer #hummingbirdplants #pollinatorplants #forthebirds #ediblenativeplants #medicinalnativeplants

Another winter wildflower: tall, or, holly-leaf Oregon-grape, or, Oregon grape-holly (Berberis aquifolium). I shouldn’t have been surprised to find it in bloom, as its domestic cultivars in city landscapes flower at this time, too. However, the only ones just beginning to bloom out on San Juan Island were those sheltered on the verge of the evergreen forest, while their neighbors just steps away on the open oak savanna were still tightly in bud and flushed from greater exposure. The grape-hollies deeper in the forest down the trail and throughout the woodlands where I live were nowhere near ready to bloom. That is because they are the Cascade grape-holly (B. nervosa), which blooms much later in spring. When not in bloom, the two species can appear confusingly similar, especially where their ranges and habitats overlap. The key differentiator is the veining of each leaflet. In B. aquifolium, each leaflet has a single, prominent midvein from base to tip. (Pics 5-7.) In B. nervosa, multiple veins radiate from the base (although the center one is often more pronounced as a slight crease in the leaflet). (Last pic.) Spot the difference? (Grape-hollies are neither grapes nor holly. However, their leaves can bear a passing resemblance to those of holly, while their strands of blue berries somewhat less resemble the fruits of their viniferous namesake.) Club member Maggie Conger shared a ray of sunshine from her January garden, a mahonia in bloom. Also known as Berberis aquifolium, Mahonia aquifolium or Oregon Grape, this winter blooming beauty is just what we need to brighten a dreary winter day (even when it’s going up to an unseasonably warm 70 degrees). Oregon Grape, a western North America native, and the state flower of Oregon. Oregon Grape is a deciduous shrub that grows to 3.5-10’ tall and is hardy in zones 5-9. It can grow in many different conditions, but does best in a partial shade location. The plant can be invasive, since after flowering, it produces blue berries that birds eat and spread. But it certainly provides a bright spot on a cloudy January day. Botanizing in the winter may come with challenges for lovers of floriferous beauty, but observing our native flora in this season can be no less rewarding! Our native evergreen shrubs are particularly fortifying to the spirits this time of year. Among these are members of the barberry family, Berberidaceae: the Oregon-grapes. The two species you will most likely encounter in our region and on the west side of the Cascade Crest are Cascade Oregon-grape, Berberis nervosa, and Tall Oregon-grape, Berberis aquifolium (formerly of the genus Mahonia). Cascade Oregon-grape is common in our forests. Also known as “low” Oregon-grape, Berberis nervosa can nonetheless reach 40” and is quite shade tolerant. Berberis aquifolium is indeed taller, reaching 7 ft, and is generally found in drier, sunnier and rockier conditions and in cultivation it is often planted in dry, exposed sites that would be challenging for many other species. A third native species, Berberis repens, can be observed locally in cultivation or on the east side of the Cascade Crest. How do you tell the difference between the two Oregon-grapes in our region? While both species have spiny, compound leaves, Cascade Oregon-grape leaflets tend to have a leathery appearance and the upper surfaces are slightly but dependably convex. Unlike Tall Oregon-grape leaflets which have a single vein, Cascade Oregon-grape leaflets provide the inspiration for the species name nervosa, containing fan-like arrangements of several branching veins originating at the leaflet base. Tall Oregon-grape leaflets are shiny on their upper surfaces and the undulations of the leaflets draw more attention to their spines. The leaflets look remarkably similar to English holly leaves. In fact, Tall Oregon-grape shares its species name with English holly, Ilex aquifolium — aquifolium meaning prickly leaf. The epithet derives from the latin acus meaning needle or pointed - as in acupuncture — and folium, leaf. Can you tell the difference between Oregon grape and holly? One is native — heck, it’s Oregon’s state flower — but the other is aggressive and introduced. At this time of year, folks might be hoping to wildcraft some holly to bring indoors, which is a great idea — a favor to the forest and pretty for decor. But please don’t accidentally harvest Oregon grape, as it provides food and habitat for native fauna. OG looks pokey, but it’s only mildly so. Holly is pretty well armed with its spiky leaves! OG’s leaflets are arranged opposite each other, with a terminal leaflet on the end of each leaf stem. Holly’s leaves alternate on its branches. OG makes dark blue-purple berries which are usually eaten by November, while holly’s famous red berries are prominent at this time of year (if your shrub bears fruit, a.k.a. “is female”). In these photos, 1-3 are OG, and 4 & 5 are holly. The last photo shows both! #oregongrape #mahoniaaquifolium #berberisaquifolium #holly #invasiveholly #invasiveplants #oregonflora #bioregionalherbalism #ethicalwildcrafting #ethicalforaging #foragingholly #foraging #seasonalherbalism

I grew up in Oklahoma, with a little forest behind my home, therefore I love seasonal color in my California landscape. You can reach out blindfolded at almost any plant nursery and buy plants with spring flowers. But choosing plants for Fall color takes concerted effort. I love California Fall beauty! Any favorites? This is Oregon Grape, Berberis aquifolium repens, a low Mahonia groundcover that keeps my blue-eyed grass dormant meadow from looking too dormant winter. Oregon Grape is evergreen, but it still has this lovely fall color on some leaves. Wonder why…. #cnps #californianativeplants #oregongrape #berberisaquifolium
