I don’t do a lot of figurines because I’ve never enjoyed the process and that usually ends in not so great results. But my love was enamored with this little hops turtle from a beer he had (last picture), so i gave it a try for his birthday. Welp, I'm finally done - except for the posting part. Lighting equipment is put away and my garage reclaimed for the car - the sculpt is now ready to gather dust indefinitely. I know that Instagram REALLY doesn't care about photos anymore, but I'm saving my splashy 'reel' for next weekend. I'll post detail photos throughout the week. This sculpt was hard in so many ways. Adding electronics always makes things a challenge, but I guess I didn't anticipate how much it'd slow me down. The internal LEDs even made the photography super challenging. First, it meant lowering the power of the key lights so that the internal LEDs could really shine - and that meant a darker set up, harder to shoot hand-held. Second, to show the animation I needed to do actual filming - and doing things like pushing in, changing focus, rotating the model - all of it SUPER hard for someone who's not used to hand held film. Even the turntable was a problem because the sculpture was plugged in, which meant that after about 180 degrees someone had to make sure to reposition the wiring below the sculpt so it didn't get yanked off the pedestal - usually my very patient wife. Then there was the 'atmosphere in a can' we had to spray to get the screen light to really glow. We literally went through 3.5 entire cans of the stuff, and I can now feel the sheen of mineral oil all over my sculpt 😭 4 days of shooting, weeks of reprogramming the lights (thanks Jim!), all boiled down to a handful of photos and a 45 second reel.
