Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring wardrobes, shattered Brooka glassware, and vandalized Liripip sofa beds—clearly, someone or something is up to no good. To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer for a long dusk-till-dawn shift—and they encounter horrors that defy imagination. • I’m a huge Grady Hendrix fan and love how he mixes comedy and horror so well. The book is laid out like an IKEA catalog with furniture ads at each chapter getting progressively more uncomfortable. The 5 employees were all very one dimensional but it worked really well is this book and they rounded out a little as the story progressed. The story itself went from creepy to spooky to gross (the snot, eww) to straight up gory. I just finished this a little bit ago and I’m pretty sure I saw it a long time ago when it was originally released in 2003 - I must have blocked it from memory because it’s familiar, and it definitely scared the hell out of me this time around watching it In typical Korean horror fashion, it’s slow-paced storytelling with moments of terrifying and unexpected imagery comes in waves, lets you relax again for a bit, and then punches you in the face just as you start to let your guard down again with new images more frightening than the last Loosely based on the Korean fairytale ‘Janghwa Hongryeon Jeon’, it definitely delivers on psychological and supernatural terror through themes of adolescence, motherhood, jealousy, grief and mental illness I really liked this a lot and I’m pretty sure The Uninvited was the American adaptation of this story which was just alright. It really has nothing on its Korean counterpart. This book has a special place in my heart because not only was it incredibly written, but the story actually takes place where I grew up. Another aspect I loved were all the plot twists. Literally every time l thought l had it figured out, a new revelation completely changed the story. I finished the book in 3 DAYS. If that doesn’t show you how addicting this book is, then I don’t know what will. Overall, this story is about redemption, deception, and revengeful ghosts. Era uno scettico - non credeva particolarmente ai fantasmi - eppure amava ascoltare, raccontare e scrivere storie di fantasmi. Ci sono da specificare due cosine prima di avventurarvi in questa lettura: • queste storie al giorno d’oggi faticano a rivelarsi spaventose per noi, figli della generazione degli effetti speciali; • Dickens ha condito questi racconti con uno stile tipicamente grottesco smorzando le atmosfere più cupe. C'e sempre un certo 'realismo incredulo' alla base della sua narrazione. In questa raccolta Dickens scrive di vendetta, follia, precognizione e visioni oniriche, indulgendo anche in qualche sfatamento della credulità contemporanea. L'antologia è ben curata e la selezione a mio avviso è stata fatta bene, ad esempio all'interno troverete anche alcuni racconti del Circolo Pickwick. This book made me jump several times while listening to it alone at home. This is a well-written tale that captivated me from beginning to end. 🍷 Dɪᴀᴠᴏʟᴀ ʙʏ Jᴇɴɴɪꜰᴇʀ Tʜᴏʀɴᴇ 🍷 • From the moment I saw the cover of this book, I knew I had to read it. Literally stunning cover art. • This one lands around a 3.5-4 for me. I liked it, didn’t love it. It didn’t quite live up to the personal hype since I had seen overwhelmingly 4-5 star reviews for it. It is a well-written, beautifully-set gothic novel with horror elements, but didn’t necessarily feel like a horror book because it wasn’t particularly scary to me. I mostly just felt sad and infuriated for the MC due to her family’s negligence and verbal/mental abuse. But the MC herself isn’t especially likable either, just evoked sympathy from me. I have enough built-up rage without all of the anger that was induced by this family, thanks. 😅 • Interestingly, this one reminded me just a bit of Mary: An Awakening of Terror, which I would not have anticipated, but also landed around 3.5-4 stars. They share a similar theme of the FMC being haunted by something and going through mental distress while unraveling intricate historical backstories involving the places they’re temporarily residing. I’d put both novels on a pretty even playing field and think they’d appeal to a similar audience. ••• I am so behind… just unposted reviews and photos galore. I feel like April chewed me up and spat me out from a mile high onto the interstate during rush hour traffic, and I’m ping-ponging between semi-trucks going 80 mph. She has hands, and it’s really pretty traitorous of her considering I’m an April Aries but whatever 🙄 I’ve been so busy and feel like a woman on the brink of madness. But hopefully life is slowing down and I can get caught up, physically read (been relying heavily on audiobooks this month), and post more going into May. Spooky hour 👻🖤🐦⬛ Do you like ghost stories? Shadow people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, according to witness statements. Out of the majority of witness testimonies, two specific shadows appear to be a regular visitor of the night. They are the hag and the man in a hat. Others have reported seeing little demons with horns and other scrawny creatures running around, a single opaque silhouette by the door, or a demented humanoid creature or creatures crawling to their bed. In the past, nearly all witness statements would be of a similar nature. A feeling of dread, an evil presence in the room, and feeling petrified. They are paralysised, unable to move or speak because this phenomenon only seems to happen when the person is having sleep paralysis. Nowadays things are a little different and I don't know what to tell you. I studied this years ago, and things are a lot different now. Like people want to put rainbows up these entities asses. Maybe some are misunderstood, but they've always been known for tormenting people. Maybe it is all just hallucinations? The hag has been known to walk over to you, where you lay and sit on your chest, suffocating you. The hat man, apparently he just stares at you from across the bedroom. Weirdo. But you feel it when you're around them... Like all the happiness and joy has vanished, and this thing wants your soul. Now, with that being said, I felt like it lacked depth (ironically, considering the name). The characters were pretty static. And it was a bit too predictable for my taste (as I figured out a big part early on). The Ghosts were pretty interesting, but also exactly what you'd expect. I wanted more...like maybe it was a first draft, not a final edit....I don't know.
