This morning, @PortsToronto CEO @RJSteenstra “crowned” Captain Kobylyashnyy of the MV Wigeon with an antique silk top hat during the @PortofToronto’s annual Top Hat Ceremony. For the past 163 years, PortsToronto has celebrated the official opening of the commercial shipping season by crowning the captain of the first ocean-going vessel or “saltie” to arrive at the port. This year the MV Wigeon won the race to be the first ship to Port, arriving from Recife, Brazil with more than 20,800 metric tonnes of sugar for @Redpath_Sugar. Tug boat Tuesday... Amy Lynn D with barge Jacob Joseph C in the Inner Harbour and Turning Basin at Port of Toronto on 16 December 2023. The projects in Toronto that ALD and the folks at Doornekamp have been involved with along the shoreline are great examples of the environmental benefits of maritime shipping. Not only is our carbon footprint reduced by eliminating all the transport trucks that would have been used in place of these barge deliveries, but our overall footprint is reduced as well. For instance, according to TRCA, we did not need to build dirt access roads to the final destinations on the shoreline and disturb or destroy habitats, which were surrounded by actively used parklands and trails. We were spared the dust. Those trucks would have kicked up on those access roads. We were spared the dust that would surely have ended up falling off the trucks along the highway journey. Given that I saw Amy Millan perform the same day that I saw Amy Lynn D, who better to turn to for a song to pair this post with? #amylynnd #portoftoronto #toronto #ontario #canada #mtyou #hwyh20 #doornekamp #lakeontario #greatlakes

Making the Connection Did you know the ferry from Billy Bishop Airport to the mainland is just 121 meters? Making it one of the shortest ferries in the world. I ventured out last night even though it was pretty chilly and wanted to capture the sun setting in the channel of the west harbour. It was a little cloudy on the horizon but fortunately there was enough of a break I captured the sun behind the ferry as it was heading to the mainland. I even managed a two minute Timelapse which I shortened by speeding it up 4X. Check it out! The clouds were phenomenal. Let me know what you think in the comments. I try to respond because to me if someone is taking their time to comment, I think it’s equally important to respond to that person. I had the opportunity this week to visit PortsToronto to present my friends there with a print of one of my photos that they had shared on their feed with a delicious pun. It depicts the passenger cruise ship Viking Octantis on its maiden voyage to Toronto, as seen through William Clay Donut, Jr. Everyone at PortsToronto have treated me so well and have been so generous with their time and knowledge that i just had to show my appreciation. I'm so happy they've placed it in their lunchroom where everyone can enjoy it. Seen here with starting with me going from left to right are Michael Riehl, Manager of Harbour Operations, Jen White, Harbour Operations Coordinator, and Helen Oel, Assistant Manager, Harbour Operations. I asked ChatGPT to provide us with a backgrounder on the Port of Toronto in under 200 words. "Did you know that the Port of Toronto has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s? Today, it's managed by PortsToronto, a government business enterprise responsible for the economic growth and sustainability of the port. The port is home to a diverse range of cargo types, including steel, sugar, cement, and more. On average, over 300 vessels visit the port each year, including cruise ships, making it a vital hub for trade and tourism in the region. But the port isn't just for business – it's also a great destination for tourists! Located in the heart of Toronto's Harbourfront neighbourhood, the port offers stunning views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk, take a boat tour, or grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants and cafes in the area. Whether you're a business owner, a local resident, or a tourist, the Port of Toronto has something to offer everyone. Come see for yourself why it's one of the city's most beloved landmarks!" Couldn't have said it better myself. #portstoronto #portoftoronto #visittoronto #history #culture #lakeontario #greatlakes #chatgpt #hwyh2o #toronto #torontoontario #ontariotravel #ontario #i❤️toronto #myhometown #the6ix #mtyou
