Dog and Owner Sessions are back for its 4th year!! Saturday July 27th at Willstead!! One day only and limited spots!! How did these start!? The Dog and Owner sessions started in 2020. The humane society was posting that they were low on food and supplies because of covid. I wanted to find a way to help. The dog and Owner sessions were born! How do they work? In exchange for a donation of your choosing (monetary, toys, litter, food, etc) you get to have a special photo session with your dog(s)! 100% of the donations collected get dropped off at the humane society! Who can book? Anyone!! Whether it is just you and your dog, your partner or the whole fam jam, the more the merrier! Is it just for dogs? Residents series detail - A hand written note to Leah on her Birthday from Rosa. “To Leah, God Bless you. Best wish you. Happy Birthday. From Rosa” (note: English is Rosa’s second language) I find this so important to include because it’s hard to convey how close you become with someone when you live and care for them. These are not direct family members and this is not an institution. We lived with the residents in a home. It’s a very unique position. Not that caring for people is unique, it’s the living with them part. We worked essentially 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. This creates a very unique and special bond, one I don’t think can be replicated. It was very hard, yet very rewarding and definitely interesting. For fifty years, my wife’s parents have owned and operated a home for ex-psychiatric patients; a community reintegration program run as a house, not an institution. And for the last two years, my wife and I – along with our two small children – have taken over the operations and lived at this home. We make meals for the residents, care for them, and over time, we have become vessels for their anxiety and neuroses. The photographs in this series are my emotional response to our encounters here, and the project has changed shape as I’ve come to know the residents better. I have also gained an enhanced understanding of my wife Leah’s experience of growing up in this home with her family. Through working with my mentors Steven Laurie and Wesley Verhoeve, I now realize that the nature of this project is symbiotic. As a reaction to the circumstance I’d found myself in – which I didn’t ever expect to be in, photography became a way for me to untangle my feelings. And mutually, the residents – essentially my collaborators here – are in a situation they didn’t choose to be in either. I had SO much fun with this session! Danielle is my cousin, and Jake has been a part of the family for a while but they are now officially engaged! We did their engagement session at our grandparents bungalow, a place that means the world to us both 💕 I always tell people to choose a location with meaning, and do something you would normally do together. 3 things I hear before almost eveeeery shoot 🎙️🗣️ 1. “We’ve never had photos done before,” 2. “We’re both suuuuuper awkward in front of the camera,” 3. “We have NO IDEA what we’re doing,” AND THANK GOODNESS!! 🫶🏻♥️ Every single one of these things is totally normal, okay and workable!:) xo How lucky am I, and how courageous are YOU to dive into something you’ve never done before and trust ME to get ya through it🥰 that’s what it’s all about!!! Unless you’re a model maybe, being in front of the camera is not a comfortable experience for most, and even if you’ve done photos before, I find all those pre session jitters come right back! This encounter left me reflecting on how profoundly our presence impacts the world around us. There are so many ways humans played a role this moment, myself included. Humans built the highway I was driving along when I came around a sharp bend to see this fox standing in the middle of the road. He was struggling to drag something large off the road, but couldn’t seem to get a good grip. A human (me) pulled over my car as the fox took off into the forest. I discovered a beautiful mallard’s still-soft body in the middle of road. She’d been hit by a car. A human (me) grabbed a shovel from my trunk and moved her body off the highway as far as I could. I had barely turned to cross the road when the fox rushed out — much sooner than I expected he would with me still close by. I stared as he struggled to pull her deeper into the woods, then paused and appeared to pluck feathers off her body for a better grip. I picked up my camera as he took off with her in his mouth — trotting along the edge of the same highway and disappearing around the bend. I’ve been thinking about this moment a lot since it happened, with my head full of “maybes”. Maybe I shouldn’t have intervened, maybe I shouldn’t have moved the mallard off the road. Maybe the fox could have dragged her away fast enough on his own. Maybe I shouldn’t have taken this photo as he was finding his grip. My goal out here is to try to make sure my presence impacts the wildlife around me as little as possible. I am so afraid of my actions causing any wildlife to associate humans or roadways with food. I hope with all my heart I didn’t do that. At the same time, so many cars had sped past me that morning. I felt so sad for the little mallard, who was so close to reaching the lake on the other side of the highway when a car had cost her her precious life. And I was worried for the fox, not wanting another life to be lost. So — I don’t know if I made the right choice here. All I know is I made the choice that felt the most right in the moment. I wanted to share the story behind this photo as transparently as possible. If you’re comfortable sharing, let me know what you would have done.
