Have you booked a summer holiday? This year we are staying in the UK and doing another road trip; so there won't be any airport box spots like the one pictured but I am hoping for lots of new spots for my collection and the grid! #postboxaday #postboxsaturday #postboxesoftheUK #airportpostbox

This is the old post office in Clun. It is now a private house, with the village post office housed in the nearby Spar, but if you swipe you can see a 1910s photo of the office and staff in its heyday. If you swipe further there's a wonky snap of a nice W T Allen & Co size A GRV wall box around the corner. Apparently the old post office building was a rather fancy and well known restaurant in the 1980s, and high status eaters would land their helicopters in the nearby castle grounds to visit. According to a chap in the pub* over the road, John Cleese of Monty Python and tax exile fame was eating in the window of the restaurant when an unfortunate villager tried, and failed, to start his car on the street outside (perhaps it was Fawlty). The witty villager wandered off down the road, came back with half a tree, and proceeded to beat his car with the branches in the street as Mr Cleese watched on.** * great pub ** facts not independently verified #clun #shropshire #visitshropshire #shropshirehills #postbox #postboxesofinstagram #postboxesivepassed #postboxaday #letterboxes #letterboxstudygroup #lbsg #letterboxlove #royalmail #postoffice #postboxesofengland #history #oldphoto #fawltytowers #montypython #johncleese #grv #georgev

This EIIR Type A stands on Shrewsbury's town walls, outside the building that was formerly the Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital for Shropshire and Wales (now a block of flats). The box was made by the Carron Company, meaning that it dates from 1952-1982ish. The hospital was built between 1879 and 1881, after an architects' competition to design a "modern" hospital - leading to its distinctive gothic design of Ruabon brick and terracotta. Apparently back in the day it used to have more gargoyles. To ensure patients had access to fresh air, it was built on the edge of the Quarry Park, and it even had its own sewage system - all the mod cons. From the outset it dealt with 1000 patients a week, initially serving primarily the poor and needy. After treating 800 soldiers per week for eye injuries sustained in WW1, the hospital was enlarged twice in the 1920s, with extra beds, private wards and new clinical rooms. By WW2 the hospital had two operating theatres, an X ray facility, 46 beds and nurses' accommodation. The hospital closed in 1998, as it needed structural repairs that were considered unviable by the then Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Trust, and was converted into apartments by 2002. As part of the redevelopment, the hospital's spire was reinstated on top of the building, having been taken down in 1959 and deemed too expensive for the NHS to replace. Incidentally, my pet theory (with no evidential basis whatsoever) is that the postbox was installed after WW2 to meet the expanding bureaucratic needs of the new NHS. #shrewsbury #shropshire #history #nhs #gothicarchitecture #postbox #letterboxes #letterboxlove #letterboxstudygroup #lbsg #postboxesofinstagram #postboxaday #postboxesivepassed #royalmail #postoffice #elizabethii #eiir #royalshrewsburyhospital #floreatsalopia #salop #murivance #townwalls #quarrypark

A GR pillar box in New Brighton, with an RNLI topper. In 1830, Liverpool merchant James Atherton purchased 170 acres of land across the Mersey from Liverpool with the aim of developing it into a regency beach resort, similar to the OG Brighton further south. The day before I took this photo I drove from Brighton to New Brighton (please don't ask why). It's a long way. #postboxesofinstagram #letterboxes #letterboxlove #postboxaday #postboxtopper #postboxesivepassed #postoffice #postbox #georgev #merseyside #liverpool #royalmail
