I remember preaching my initial sermon and then preaching only one more time over the next five years. This frustrated me because i figured there was no on other way for me to hone my gift without preaching from the pulpit. I wasn’t the type of person to ask so I sat in the “dugout” watching. These days are different in that you don’t have to wait for the opportunity or pulpit, you can create it. Is there a branch of your church that you can add value to by writing the blog, recording the podcast or YouTube channel? Your audience is there and they will probably never step foot inside your church. 🚨Game Plan for the week 🚨 One thing I didn’t do until late into my preaching was watching videos of myself. Honestly, I just hated the sound of my voice on video. (I had to get over that!) Being forced to watch however, I saw some distracting things I did when I spoke. Reviewing my sermons was not about critiquing the content but how I presented it. It legit took me years to feel comfortable in my own skin when it came to ministry. Every pastor I saw preached with a certain style, mostly closing sermons with an emphatic yell. I’m not built like that. I love teaching. I don’t picture the church running around after a point or the organ flowing behind me. I honestly like silence when I’m speaking. Looking back at one of my sermons from years ago helped me see how my view of God, creation and his will has evolved. Leadership in the pastorate is lived out in two ways: word and conduct. There are times when you probably don’t feel your best about the sermon. You can always center yourself however by asking: 1) Did I preach the Gospel? If yes, you did your job. 2) If I’m preaching the gospel, am I practicing what I preach? Timothy’s ambition was to please an audience of one. No one clapped or said amen! But was God glorified? No one joined the church. But did you preach Jesus? No one is watching our service. But what do they see when they are watching you? Let’s make sure we maintain the right measure in ministry and God will take care of the rest. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time, duh! I’m not naturally an organized person. I’ve had to find a plethora of things to keep me together over the years. 🤪 I’m a strong supporter of @evernote for my note taking in terms of details. Before I get to Evernote however, I use an app called penultimate to organize my thoughts and to brain dump Big Ideas into (sermon prep). There is a part of me that still needs to write things down before I start typing and this app helps. In this app you are able to create different notebooks as well. One of the best experiences you can have in theological education is internships/supervised ministry. I found my first project I was able to participate in when interning Shiloh of Orange Park with Pastor Donald Lewis. At the time they were looking to make the most of a space that members used for fellowship. The best part about being there however was not the projects or seeing how a mega ministry operates. What meant the most was that they cared about the spiritual roots of my ministry. Before I took on any project, they made sure that I spent time with God. Connect with leadership that cares about your roots and you will never have to worry about the fruit. This is class. Nothing magical… no fireworks…no smoke or special lighting. The way our schedule was setup was that we did blocks for 3 hours. (15 minute break) This class went from 6:30pm-9:30pm. 😡. (Minor Prophets) Where you go to school at matters but who study amongst is just as important. This professor was retiring this semester. He honestly made my life hell for 3 years but I’m better because of him. (Reason for the picture.) Relationships in theological training are not there to make you comfortable, they are there to sharpen you. This is class. I often hear references from preachers about the athletes they admire: @kingjames @stephencurry30 .. We appreciate their ability to run, jump and score under moments of pressure. A lot of times we do not take into consideration the work they put in during the off-season. It is the hours in the dark that give them the ability to perform when it matters the most. Yesterday, 60% responded that they do not take time for themselves. We neglect how spiritual disciplines can help us in ministry. Spiritual disciplines should be our lifestyle. Will we have it all together? No! But there should be practices in our routine besides studying for the next sermon. This week, we are practicing solitude. Find some time to get away and be with God.
