Tonight I believe I accomplished one of my one of my most prized dreams, to come back to my high school that helped me become the man I am and impart wisdom on our next generation of exceptional leaders. To give the keynote address at the illustrious Eau Claire High School National Honor Society induction was not only humbling but rekindled so many memories of the hardwork and dedication I put in to becoming a member of the National Honor Society myself. To see part of the village that helped develop and cultivate the leader in me, and hear the excitement in their voice for all of the things I’ve accomplished thus far made me proud. On April 13th, a philanthropic initiative undertaken by the Brooklyn Org provided an additional avenue for community service. One particular endeavor held special significance for brother: @lkrose07 due to personal connection to the locality. Growing up in Canarsie, Brooklyn, the Wyckoff House Museum was a landmark that I passed by regularly, not knowing what it was and what it stood for. Finally setting foot within the space of The Wyckoff Museum witnessing and seeing its transformation from a neglected space to a revered cultural institution was truly amazing. Engaging in the community service event, I joined fellow volunteers from the Brooklyn Org in dedicating efforts to various locations across Brooklyn, including the Wyckoff House Museum. Here, I actively participated in cleaning and tending to the farm area, while also benefiting from an educational session on agricultural practices. The event facilitated meaningful connections with diverse individuals, allowing me to both lead and follow, drawing upon the values instilled by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Furthermore, I embraced the opportunity to support the initiatives of both the Brooklyn Org and the Wyckoff House Museum. Propaganda: Aaron Silva says “Bond Funds Being Diverted”. Straight talk: Bond money has been used to make investments in facilities that result in reduced operational expenses. An example would be solar panels that reduce energy expense. The reduced energy expense allows for greater % of operating budget to fund teacher salaries and raises. Using bond debt is the most efficient way to make improvements and reduce our M&O spend: The school district is able to service debt before recapture payments. Just as putting money in your 401K pre-tax as a more efficient way of saving for retirement; the same principle applies to school bonds. Propaganda: Aaron Silva says “No Future Raises for Teachers”. Straight talk: The state of Texas dictates how much each school district receives per student. The EISD school board and Eanes ISD CFO, Chris Scott, don’t control this. Until our lawmakers make public education a priority at the State Capitol, after systematically defunding our public schools in exchange for a voucher system, we will not be able to change the per student allotment. The EISD School Board and CFO make the best decisions possible given the state’s limited funding. Actual outcomes have been very different for a variety of reasons: 1. Budgets use conservative estimates for tax assessments, interest rates etc. as they should. 13 years ago, I graduated from a university whose motto is one simple word: “Service.” I’ve had the privilege of serving for a decade years on different boards and committees. This past Friday, following my final meeting, my service in an official capacity has been placed on hiatus. Serving Alma Mater as HUAA President has been one of the most rewarding leadership opportunities I have been blessed to experience. Somebody caught their first fish this past weekend! I got a strike and immediately told Grace I needed her help. She jumped out of her chair and took over. I held the pole and she took over the reeling. Together we reeled in a 20lbs drum. She was excited! It was a small hardhead…but in both of our minds, it was a 20lbs drum! Teamwork is everything. As a leader, inspire others around you for greatness. Grace was ready to get her fish, but without her dad, she couldn't have gotten the bait in the water, let alone catch the fish. Next time we go, she gets to hold the pole…and I will be the run running to help her reel it in! As a leader, show your team the why and the how…and little by little have them begin to show you.
