🌊 Today is the anniversary of Spurgeon’s baptism. On this date in 1853, a sixteen-year-old Charles Spurgeon, publicly declared his faith in Christ as he was plunged under the waters of baptism. A FEW IMPORTANT CLARIFICATIONS ABOUT BAPTISM: (Today, people are really confused about baptism. Thankfully, the Bible is clear about baptism, so we don’t have to worry or be confused!) 🌊 Baptism does NOT save anyone. It does not grant regeneration or win God’s mercy. We are not born again through baptism. All of that is accomplished by God through the death and resurrection of Christ. 🌊 Baptism IS a public profession of faith, but it’s not just that. When someone is baptized, they ARE publicly declaring that they belong to Jesus. In some cultures, this leads to persecution and execution. But baptism is also so much more than that — it’s also a picture of how Jesus saved us. Just like Jesus went under the watery judgment of God, we go under the waters. Because Jesus died in our place, the old “us” is buried in the waters. Just like Jesus rose from the grave, we come up out of the waters. Because Jesus rose again, a new “us” is born to follow him all of our days. 🌊 Baptism is not for babies. There’s no biblical example of babies getting baptized. Baptism is an expression of a believer’s faith, to be received upon conversion, not a mark of a family’s inclusion in the covenant. (Infant baptism was a theological innovation in the second century, rooted in the false understanding that baptism saves/regenerates. How important it is for parents to bring their children and little ones to know the Lord in person and talk with Him in prayer. How needful to train up a child in the wonderful truth of the Word of God, and show them the path to peace and wisdom, for when they are old they will not depart from it. How precious are the trusting hearts of little children, and how much we can learn from their innocent example, of the need to develop a total trust in God, and show pure delight in the Lord Jesus Christ, for this blesses the heart of God and honours His holy name. It was the custom in Jewish circles, to bring infants and little children to a rabbi or elder, and have him pronounce a blessing on their offspring. In this passage, some children were brought to the Lord Jesus by their parents, so that He would put His hands on them and pray for them and bless them. But the short-sighted disciples rebuked these parents for bothering the Lord. Não, não há nada de bom em você e, mesmo que haja, não seria uma virtude! Ao longo dos meus trinta e sete anos de vida e quase catorze anos de ministério, sempre me preocupei com o que os outros pensavam de mim. Confesso que Jesus também fez esse questionamento, sobre o que as pessoas achavam que ele, o Filho de Deus, era. (MT 16:13) É engraçado, mas no ambiente anterior em que vivia "igreja", havia um ditado: "Não fale com fulano" ou "Não ande com beltrano", pois ele está "queimado". Isso tomava proporções tão grandes que nos deixava perplexos sobre se deveríamos excluir ou evitar tais pessoas. Com a maturidade e após ler a palavra de Deus por muitos anos, percebi o quanto fui pretensioso. Entretanto, acredito que a preocupação de todo cristão é se é bom o suficiente, se tem qualidades para pertencer a uma comunidade cristã, e como seu passado é visto - serei julgado pelo que fui ou pelo que sou? Infelizmente, seremos constantemente julgados não apenas pelo presente, mas principalmente pelo passado. O Apóstolo Paulo sofreu perseguições em seu ministério, principalmente devido ao seu passado obscuro. Perseguia e matava os cristãos, mas ainda assim disse: "Eu sou o principal dos pecadores" (I Timóteo 1:15). Então, não deixe de frequentar a igreja por causa do que pensam de você, e, para ser honesto, você também não é tão bom assim. Somente a graça de Deus e o sangue de Cristo nos regeneram da herança pecaminosa que nos é concedida! O que importa é buscar a transformação e o perdão de Deus e seguir em frente, buscando viver de acordo com os ensinamentos de Jesus. Deus é misericordioso e está sempre pronto para nos perdoar, e é isso que realmente importa. Não se preocupe com o que os outros pensam sobre você, mas sim com o que Deus pensa a seu respeito. Ele te ama e quer o seu bem, e isso é o que importa. ❤️‍🩹 God is at work, not just to make you look better — but to actually heal you. He sees the brokenness in our world and the brokenness in our lives and he doesn’t just sympathize (“Aww man, that’s too bad!”) He stepped into our brokenness to save (incarnation), he died for our sins to pay for our brokenness (crucifixion), he rose from the dead to put all the broken things back together (resurrection)! In the midst of your worst sin, Christ sees you and gives dignity. Because he paid for your sin, it no longer defines you — so don’t live in shame anymore. In the midst of your worst suffering, Christ sees you and gives dignity. Because he rose again, we know that the broken things in our world will not stay broken forever — he is the God who makes all things new. He is gently, tenderly holding you. He will bring justice. The wicked people who have abused you will one day be held accountable. Justice will be done. Jesus is your unflinching ally. God has brought us this humbling message of healing for our brokenness. Now, we must share it with the broken and hurting people around us. We must go to those who are sinning, with a gentle warning. We extend an invitation to find a truer source of joy in Christ. We must go to those who are suffering, with a gentle comfort. We do not rebuke the suffering — their suffering is not necessarily a result of their sin, but “that God’s works might be displayed in” their lives (John 9:3). Versículo do Dia: “Não peço que os tires do mundo.” João 17:15 Para todos os crentes, a ida ao lar, a fim de estarem com Jesus, no tempo determinado por Deus, será um acontecimento bendito e feliz. Em apenas alguns anos, os soldados de Cristo que agora estão lutando o bom combate da fé (ver 1 Timóteo 6.12) terminarão o seu conflito e entrarão no gozo de seu Senhor. Embora Cristo tenha suplicado que seu povo, no tempo certo, esteja onde Ele está, Ele não pediu que seu povo seja retirado imediatamente deste mundo para o céu. O Senhor Jesus deseja que os crentes permaneçam aqui. Entretanto, quão frequentemente o cansado peregrino oferece uma oração como a seguinte: “Quem me dera asas como de pomba! Voaria e acharia pouso” (Salmos 55.6), mas Cristo não ora assim. Ele nos deixa nas mãos de seu Pai, até que, como espigas completamente maduras, sejamos cada um de nós reunidos no celeiro de nosso Senhor. Jesus não pede nossa remoção instantânea por meio da morte, pois permanecer na carne é necessário para os outros, se não é proveitoso para nós mesmos. O Senhor Jesus pediu que fôssemos guardados do mal. Quando os crentes enfrentam qualquer aflição, frequentemente eles tem o desejo de morrer. Pergunte-lhes por que, e eles responderão: “Queremos estar com Cristo”. Temos receio de que isto ocorra não exatamente porque eles anseiam estar com o Senhor, e sim porque desejam livrar-se de seus problemas. Se assim não fosse, eles sentiriam esse desejo de morrer em outras ocasiões, quando não estivessem sob a pressão das provações. Eles querem ir para casa, não tanto pela companhia do Salvador quanto para terem descanso. Ora, ter o desejo de partir é correto, se pudermos senti-lo da maneira como o apóstolo Paulo o sentiu. Estar com Cristo é muito melhor. Mas o desejo de livrar-se das provações é egoísta. O seu desejo deve ser o de glorificar a Deus, por meio de sua vida neste mundo, até quando Ele quiser. It can be difficult to find gratitude in the hard times, to find peace and joy, or to find the good out of a trying situation. Over the past few years life has thrown wave after wave at me that I haven’t known what to do with. But as trials have come and gone the more I can relate to Spurgoen’s quote. When a hard situation comes, instead of sinking into despair, I pause and think, what are you doing in this situation God? We want Christian people not only to know, but to use what they know. Happy is he who knows what to do at the right time! Many people are very knowing half an hour after it is too late; but to be filled with wisdom is to be able at once to apply knowledge rightly in difficult cases. Nós vemos uma onda de falsos líderes tentando trazer pecadores a Deus por meio do emocionalismo, onde Cristo não é o centro de suas mensagens, mas tentam produzir emoções nos ouvintes por meio de músicas antropocentricas e de falas que acariciam seu ego, ou seja, anularam a cruz de Cristo, e como já disse Spurgeon, "os que nascem emocionados morrem quando a emoção acaba."
