I can't help myself. Yet another privet. I couldn't resist that movement! Going to make a nice little shohin in a few years. I took off more roots than you see in the last photo so I could cram it into a smaller pot. I'm worried that if I let this tree run it'll lose the curvature it is holding onto. It's also a good month later than I like to collect privet. But, it's a privet. So I expect a full recovery. New to my collection is this privet raft that looks like some sort of folklore hybrid creature crouching to take a dump!! I’ve just repotted it… it had plenty of nice fine roots so I could get it into a shallower pot. It’s also been re-wired. The strategically placed rock helps somewhat to disguise the weird base but carving will improve it dramatically. Literati privet gets its first nice pot. Ceramic by @brightsidebonsai I only collected this tree last year, and the roots show it. Not nearly as root bound as the other privets I've repotted this year. I want to wire it now, but am planning to let it rock out the next few months and reassess midsummer or in the fall. Shohin privet repot. Pot by Maureen Jenigen, Deadwood Pottery I recall the last time I repotted this tree that I wanted to change the soil line to hide that sharp bend on the right. Now, I'm digging it. Gives some extra flair to the design. And no roots grew below it anyway. Not shown in the photos, there is a large gap in the nebari on the back left side of the trunk. I've packed the area with sphagnum moss hoping something sprouts. If it doesn't, that large scar on the left may turn into a hollow by way of the trunk rotting through. And I'd likely concede to anyone making it. But I don't mind slower growth rates. My garden keeps me busy enough as it is, and I'm not in a rush to get any trees to show quality. This new pot is a (albeit small) size upgrade over the original, and should serve the purpose of letting this tree grow well this year. I've left all the branches to extend freely for one more season before I chop them to stumps next spring. And probably perform another repot. Privet throw out new roots faster than any other tree in my garden. First ceramic pot for this small privet collected in 2022. Work completed 24 Feb 2024. Pot by Doug French. In hindsight, I should have carved the large root I've just reduced when I collected this tree. I think it will heal fine, but would have avoided a few health problems. The center of it was rotting below the soil and needed carving. Fingers crossed there is some good healing and callusing of the wound. The pot for this tree was serendipitous. I joined the Northern Virginia Bonsai Society this year, and at the meeting yesterday they held a members' only sale. Found this pot at a great price (there's a small non-structural crack you can see in the back right of photo 4). Immediately came home and found a tree to place in it. This pot is possibly too large for the final design of this tree, but provides a lot of room to grow its primary structure. #bonsai #bonsaiprogression #adb_ligustrum #privetbonsai #ligustrumbonsai
Resetting this small privet to improve taper and movement. When I first collected this tree I thought I could use that large branch to the back and right in the last photo. As I've watched it grow for two years, I didn't like the straight section immediately above it. And I couldn't figure out how to incorporate a first branch that large. So, a hard cut back to reset the design it is. Tried approach grafting for the first time tonight. I think I did an alright job, but also heard a few pops when I tried to set the first bend on the branches. Hoping the damage was minimal and that at least one of them takes. If not, I'm certain this tree will offer plenty more suckers over time to try again. The trunk certainly needs the extra branches. Another privet collected over the weekend. This guy is quite chunky, but it didn't have much taper or movement higher up to justify keeping a longer trunk. There are fewer roots than I'd like, but I've had success cutting this much off in the past. Just going to monitor and treat it like a cutting for the next few months. Last winter I spoke about a decision that needed to be made about this tree…but in reality it was a non negotiable. Back to box. This tree was put back into a wooden box early spring and is now ready to push its second flush. The tree will be left to grow out and reviewed in summer. Removing the suckers yet again on this shohin privet, #adb_ligustrum_3 I've let this tree grow and recover strength most of this year, as I lost the lowest branch earlier this summer. I need to repot next year and address the nebari. I also cut off any vertical growth at the base of wired branches. Selecting new leaders on this raft style privet #adb_ligustrum_raft_1 Collected a little over 16 months ago, I've gone way too hard on this tree and should have left it in a larger pot to grow out (I think the repot this spring was necessary, but it should have stayed in something bigger). I love the pairing with this rounded rectangle by Randy Doughty of Bent Pine Pottery, it's just not quite ready. Next spring it goes back into something larger to beef up the new leaders, followed by carving next summer for taper from leaders to the next highest branch. Unfortunately, it may be 3 or more years before I get to enjoy this tree in pot pairing again. Front, back, cleaned, anchored to new angle, original. #adb_ligustrum_8 I only collected this tree this spring, and I'm on the second wiring. I tweaked a few branches since these photos (if not just because the tree got banged around prepping for the tornado watch last night). I'd love to make the back the front, but worry the nebari won't cut it. The tree is leaning back a little, and I don't think it supports rotating further forward without losing the subtle movement in the trunk. I guess we'll find out next spring when I repot and really set the angle.
