924 Gilman Street, April 1995. (I have more at @924gilman1995) Gilman is the DIY non-profit all-ages art and music space, mostly punk rock of course, in Berkeley, California. Much of what the genre and mind-set has become can be directly attributed to the sound that evolved from the earlier years of this progressive, inclusive, non-inclusive (alcohol and substance-free and a strict non-violent, non-hate mantra) creative collective. The most sacred, of course, is Operation Ivy and Green Day is now a household name. Bands that played at the time were a very young @afireinside , Tilt, Fifteen, Pansy Division, Total Chaos, Screw32, Link 80, Wet-Nap, Dead and Gone, FYP, Blackfork and more. My approach was to photograph the scene and those bands were a component of the, ahem, larger picture. In 1995, as a college photojournalism student, I camped out and shot all the film I could find. In 2019, I rescued the negatives from their decay and have been diligently deciphering them. The scanning is laborious but the research has been fascinating. The thing to remember is that punk’s popularity exploded in 1994 following the release of Green Day’s infectious album ‘Dookie.’ The images from 1995, upon examination, reflect the influx of a new young audience (still punk) and a community that, in my opinion, had just hit its stride. Knowing that this gentleman, with his Liberty Spikes in full effect, would eventually pass through my frame if I stood in one space long enough, I waited. It was just one of those photographs one can visualize in advance. To this date it is my favorite. Not just from the story, but to date. I’m hoping to find the funding to put this project into print form.
