Warning: “humble” bragging ahead 😬🤠🥋 . . . I talk a lot a trash about Jiu Jitsu but thats mostly because it’s so easy and some Jiu Jitsu nerds are so delusional it’s hard not to. In real life though I know that committing to learning how to butt scoot was the best decision I’ve ever made. As a competitor and a martial artist there’s nothing I’m more proud of than being a 4x @ibjjf Chicago open champion (once at every belt level accept blue belt) and a Jiu Jitsu black belt respectively. I love the relationships and lessons I’ve gained/learned on the mats. I have bonds with people that I offer wise may have never been blessed enough to meet. I’ve learned more about myself as a competitor through Jiu Jitsu than I have during any of my other martial arts training. As much as I hate to admit it I wasn’t even truly a real competitor until I started doing Jiu Jitsu. Before that I was just a talented athlete that competed. There’s a huge difference. I’m often asked what I’m most proud of when it comes @qjitsu_wrestlingclub . This is always a hard question for me because I’m not proud of any part of it and I’m grateful for it all. I have to say after some thought though that if I were to be proud of something it would be of the big brother/little brother dynamic that has developed between these 2 goofballs @ddavv11dd and @ian.gustin . I think everyone that trains with us would easily agree that some our best times as a team have been watching these 2 argue and bicker like they have known each other their entire lives. Of course their bond has absolutely nothing to do with me but it’s truly rewarding and refreshing every time these 2 are around at the same time. There are times when I show up to open mat or to coach @ian.gustin at a tournament and his first question is always “where’s @ddavv11dd ?” He even did it today. David is a boxer who hates jiu jitsu more than I do but he shows up to open mat just for Ian. That’s what I’m proud of. I’m proud of these 2 amazing young men and future leaders/trend setters. Howdy! 🤠 A couple of @qjitsu_wrestlingclub related training updates. Going forward all classes will “require” MMA gloves. No that doesn’t mean if you don’t have them you can’t attend class. It means if you’re planning to train MMA long term it more than just a one off you will need MMA gloves to fully grasp the art and sport. For years I did the majority of my wrestling training in mma gloves. No striking was allowed but understanding the dynamics of gripping with gloves helped me it ways I can’t put into words here. Secondly, the second half of all Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes @bendermartialarts will be for strength and conditioning for the next 8 weeks starting today. This one is hard to swallow. Last night wasn’t our night even though we did everything right. @grootslang_88 had an epic training camp but we just couldn’t pull it together last night. This game is tough and very unforgiving. As of today @qjitsu_mma isn’t accepting any MMA fight offers for the next few months. We have to go back to the drawing board and figure out a new approach. It’s taken 19 years for this moment to manifest but here we are. These are the two men that gave me my start in MMA. There would be no @qjitsu_mma without @tashihill and @sudainternational . My first MMA fight was in January of 2005 on their show Pure Force MMA. I’m so proud and humbled to be able to say these two awesome men were the first to take a chance on me and show me that I could be so much more than I was at the time. They gave me my first taste of what it’s like to be champion. To be truly respected and appreciated. Fast forward to today (literally almost 19 years exactly) and @sudainternational is one of the most well respected BJJ programs in Illinois and @qjitsu_mma is picking up steam for sure.
