We’ve been loving all the new faces at Rose City Run Club these days! It brings us so much joy to see our run club grow. It’s wild to think about how 4 years ago, our small but mighty club went fully virtual when COVID hit. We would hop on zoom, say hello to each other, then all go for our runs separately in our own neighborhoods. Once we finished running, we would hop back on zoom to drink beers and hang out. Rose City Run Club has been around for ~10 years — our virtual era was definitely one of the most unique iterations of the club. We know showing up to a new run club can be scary — we’ve heard time and time again from folks saying things like “it feels like I have to be able to run 3-5 miles without stopping to go to a run club.” This simply isn’t the case with RCRC. One of our major focuses is making this an all paces and experiences welcome group. Here’s what that looks like right now: We’ve been breaking in to a few different pace groups, each of which goes for ~30 minutes. You can always go more or less than that if you want! We generally have the following paces/distances: -A walking group, going about 2 miles -A run/walk group — 2min run/2 min walk intervals, going 2 miles at a 14:00-15:00min/mile pace -A continuous run group, going ~3 miles at a 10:30-11:00min/mile pace -we also have some folks going faster at a continuous run, going between 3-4 miles (this is sometimes more than one group), going anywhere from a 7:30min/mile to 9:00min/mile -Some folks have expressed interest in a slightly faster-paced run/walk interval pace — going 2-3 miles at between a 12:00-13:00min/mile — we are working on making this happen! If this sounds like your speed, we’d love to have you! As a group, we actively try and make sure that everyone has someone to run with if they want it, especially if you’re new to the group. We’ve got routes posted across all of our social media platforms, utilizing Wilshire Park for the 2-3 mile routes, and adding in Fernhill park for the 4+ mile routes. Questions? Concerns? It’s First Tuesday! Tonight, Tuesday 5/7, we’ll be meeting at @thebeermongers for our run. Meet at 6:00 in front of BeerMongers, we’ll take off for the run at 6:20pm, and go for about 30 minutes. Then we’ll meet back at the Taphouse, grab a table outside, and enjoy some drinks. BeerMongers has moved into a new location in SE (only a few blocks from their old location), and they now have a nice big outdoor patio along with their amazing selection of beer. They are located at 2415 SE 11th Ave. We’ll be headed over to the waterfront for our miles tonight — the routes are a little choose your own adventure from there, but we’ll have our usual walk & run/walk groups along with our faster-paced groups. Join us SATURDAY APRIL 20 at 10:30am for a late-morning run of the Alameda Stairs Route in NE Portland! We’ll run or walk the route, and then meet up at Rose City Food Park (NE 52nd & Sandy) around 11:30/Noon for food and drinks after. The Alameda stairs route weaves through NE Portland’s Alameda ridge through a series of public staircases. Be prepared — there will be some hills and stair-climbing! Where to meet: We’ll meet at the corner of NE 49th & Brazee, and head up the first flight of stairs. There is plenty of street parking in the neighborhoods. Note: we do not have official gear storage, so plan on stashing your stuff in your own car. If you ride your bike over, one of us will be happy to keep your stuff in a car. The routes: We will post links to the Strava are posted in our Facebook group currently, and we will post them in Instagram stories the day before the event. They are also saved in the highlight reel called “Alameda Stairs”. We will post a link with a PDF created by Oregon Metro that has a map and a route description. We recommend downloading the routes to your Strava, and/or having the map up on your phone as you run — the routes are a little tricky! The full route: 4.6 miles with ~450ft of climbing Abbreviated Route: 2.8 miles with about 200ft of climbing Both routes include climbing and descending staircases — all the staircases do have handrails. There are also additional hills along both routes. We will have a group walking the 2.8-mile route. After: Meet up over at @_rosecityfoodpark_ for food & drinks! Plan on starting to meet up around 11:30 after the run. It’s located at 52nd & Sandy, just a couple of blocks east of where we’ll start our run. For the 3rd year, RCRC athlete Meaghan Russell will be hosting the Marine Drive Dry Tri. This is truly one of the most unique & inclusive sporting events in Portland — you don’t want to miss it! Rather than a traditional triathlon format, the Marine Drive Dry Tri has Run, Bike, and Skate legs. Participants can choose to do any or all of the sports, and can participate as an individual or as a team. NEW this year — there will be skate rentals available the morning of the race thanks to a partnership with @rosecityrollers NEW this year — there will be customizable distances available for each leg! The full distance for each leg is 7.4 miles, but participants will have the option to complete a shorter distance if they would like Awards for will be given out for the top three male, female, and non-binary finishers for the full distance of each sport, as well as for the full Dry Tri. Last year, during the warmer months, we picked a different local brewery, food truck pod, or bar to host our runs out of on the first Tuesday of every month. It allowed us to support other local businesses and run in different neighborhoods throughout Portland. We liked doing this so much that we’ll be doing First Tuesdays again this year — starting in April! Our first First Tuesday will be Tuesday, April 2nd out of @mosaictaphouse up in St. John’s! The Winter Lights Festival is a truly unique Portland event — these days it’s expanded from the OMSI plaza to displays throughout the entire city. Next week is the Portland Winter Lights Festival! There are a couple of displays in the Cully neighborhood around @oakbrewpdx — we’ll have a couple of different route options next week if you’d like to run by them. The 3-mile route will run east from Oakshire to see a light-up mushroom display in the neighborhood. There will also be a 2.5-mile option that is very similar to our normal 2-mile route, and runs by a display just west of Wilshire park. Registration for the 3rd Annual Marine Drive Dry Tri is OPEN! Mark your calendars-the event will be held on June 15, 2024 at 8am! For the last 2 years, Meaghan Synan Russell, one of out Rose City Run Club regulars, has organized this truly unique event, and we can’t wait for the 3rd installment! Everyone is welcome!
