I went for my first walk wearing the @k9hiplign last night, and we caught a beautiful sunset. I didn't mind wearing it at all but once we got going, it did become more obvious that it is a bit too big for me as the bits around my hind legs moved around some and they shouldn't. Mom also noticed that I was a bit sore after the walk, which I hadn't been in a long time. Tnis is probably because this forced me to move a little differently. Because of this, we're gonna start slow with it. Yesterday, mom & I made the 1.5 hrs long drive to @upwarddogrehab for my physiotherapy appointment. Aside from a bit of barking at the movers outside, I was the bestest boy, and Sarah seemed happy with how I'm moving and the progress we have made. With each visit and as I make improvements, the goals and exercises to do at home change a bit. Our new goal is to strengthen my caudal and lateral thigh musculature, straighten out my spine as I still twist a bit, and lastly, to improve my pelvic tilt. Seems like a long list! 😯 I also came home with a new jacket of sorts to try out. It's called the K9 Align. Think of it as wearable therapy for hip dysplasia. It will help to improve my posture and give me support, and if it seems to help me, I will get one of my very own. This one is a loaner and is actually a little too big for me, but it will work for now. My appointments can be a lot, and so I get breaks to just chill out or shake it off, as seen in the little video. Sometimes mom buys us toys knowing full well that they aren't gonna last but that we'll have with them so it's worth it. This adorable little sheep was one such character. He made a really fun squeaky noise that I silenced in a very short amount of time. Over a period of a few days, as mom would let me have him, I skillfully removed each of his legs & then started on his head. It was at that point that mom took him away. An at home version of a pub night snack featuring the @ohmy.dogness poutine kit and duck wing (BRUCE10 to save). Enrichment for our 4-legged friends doesn't always have to mean purchasing what can sometimes be pricey and often difficult to clean items. We can make use of everyday items found around the house, and in this case, we are using something that all of us have on hand, toilet paper rolls. (Paper towel and wrapping paper rolls would also work, just cut into shorter pieces). For this game, I find kibble or trainer treats work best as you want something on the smaller side. Here, we are using @ohmy.dogness freeze-dried duck trainers and freeze-dried cheese trainers (BRUCE10 to save). If playing for the first time, you may want to prep with your dog watching so they know what's going on and that there is something good inside the rolls. Simply drop treats inside the rolls (image 4) and then also pretend to fill some of them so that they have the scent but no treats (image 5). I just let the treats fall through to the end of the tube into my hand, but don't let him see them in my hand. Next, lay the tubes out and cue them to sniff out the treats. We use "find it." You will see in the first video that Bruce sniffs an empty tube and then immediately moves on to one that contains treats. It's fun to watch them problem solve and to see their approach to getting the treats out. I suggest starting with only a couple of rolls and filling them all to get them interested. You can then increase the difficulty each time you play. ie increase the number of tubes overall and the number that contain no treats. The best part is, if they destroy the tube, you aren't out any money. 😊 Is this something your 4-legged friend would enjoy? Cod skin trainers from @ohmy.dogness can only mean one thing, whistle (recall) training. This is the only time I get this super high value treat! Whistle recall is meant to be used as an emergency recall only as overuse can dilute the impact and effectiveness. This training is a very slow process as we want to ensure 100% success. In short, the whistle recall signal is three short whistle blasts and then a super high value reward in close proximity. To start, the dog is by your side when the whistle is blown, and then the reward is given. Here we are showing the next part, a treat is tossed 3-6 feet away from you, and the dog is told to get it. Once the treat is consumed, give the whistle signal, and as soon as the dog turns towards you, mark with "yes," cheer them, and then treat them in close proximity. We are building value for the dog being in our presence. With success, a little more difficulty can be added in, like tossing the treat further away. Distance is only added when there has been success with the dog close by. Anytime a new place is added, you go back to close proximity until you have lots of success. We only want to add one new element at a time. The whistle recall is meant to be used only when everything else has failed and the environment has "stolen" the dog's attention, and you absolutely need them to come back to you. The hope is that you will never actually have to use it as you will have built high value for being in our presence. Apologies, as our video isn't great. Holding regular treats, high value treats, a whistle, and a phone to record was no easy task, but I think you can get the idea. Bruce absolutely loves this training and generally starts jumping and acting silly as soon as he sees me grab the whistle. It really helps that he knows the reward at the end is very worth it! As I shared in my stories, I attended a @puzzlepuck sensory room yesterday. This was my second time doing one, and I was a much different dog from the first session, which means physiotherapy is paying off! When I went for my first session, I had not yet started physiotherapy, and the main goal of attending was to observe my movements and get some feedback from Tessa. As a young guy with bi-lateral hip dysplasia, being able to observe me move around freely and at my own pace is a very valuable tool, and in addition to that, the sensory room is a great brain activity for me. Tessa has a great eye in spying not only the obvious but also the more subtle things, and that can be a great help. She took note that my hind end is much stronger now, and I didn't get tired so quickly. There was no scuffing my feet this time around. I definitely still have stiffness in my back, though, as when I stretch forward, the muscles in my back ripple like waves. I really enjoyed exploring the room, and in between sniffing, I had little bursts of the zoomies, which made mom laugh. Mom & I have been working on a new trick and now that @ohmy.dogness sardines are my reward, I'm doing it consistently enough to share. 'Teeth" usually results in more of a lip curl as witnessed here but the end goal is for me to show my teeth when requested. How many treats are too many? When it comes to @ohmy.dogness , I don't think there is such a thing as too many, as evidenced by my current stash (first video, no sound). I will say that this is the most we have had on hand at any one time and that it will last me quite a while. Do you see your favorite in my stash? 🐰🐣 Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates! I was quite spoiled today! It's been a rainy few days but that didn't stop mom & I from heading to the ball field yesterday. It was pretty soupy but I had a blast! If you watch carefully in the first video, you can see the water splashing up as I run. My physiotherapist gave me the ok to do some running on my own accord which was exciting news. This was the first time in quite some time that I got to run "loose" & I didn't seem any worse for wear from doing it. Heyyyy, da bin ich wieder mal ihr Lieben. Mittlerweile bin ich jetzt 8 Monate alt und schon ganz schön gewachsen 📏. Auf die Waage bringe ich schon stolze 25 kg. In den letzten Wochen hat mein Frauchen mit mir ganz schön viel trainiert. Leinenführigkeit, Rückruf, Sitz, Platz, Bleib, Schau, einige Tricks und vieles mehr. Neuerdings schleppt sie mich zu so einem Dummy-Trainingskurs. Das macht mir ganz schön viel Spaß. 🐶 Aber wisst ihr was? Mein Frauchen fährt mit mir auch oft an Orte, die ich noch gar nicht kenne. Dort gibt es ganz schön viel zu schnüffeln 👃🏻 und entdecken. Manchmal gibt es an diesen Orten auch andere Zwei- und Vierbeiner. Vor Bein paar Tagen wir eine Koppel besucht. Da liefen richtig große Vierbeiner herum. Mein Frauchen nannte sie Pferde. Bei denen haben wir schon wieder Antijagdtraining gemacht. Yesterday mom & I went to Scott's Bay for a walk along the beach. The tide was on it's way out & it was pretty windy but that worked to our advantage as we were pretty much all alone. We've had a few storms over the winter months & the landscape of the beach has changed significantly since we were there last. Back in December, my friends Bille & Odie (@shedgaloots) gifted me a beautiful beaded collar from @wilmaswardrobe041 🧡💚🖤 (image 3). "What ya got there mom?" I took my new Ollie bowl from @thewantedco for a trial run this morning. This is a two-in-one slow feeder bowl and lick mat. I don't eat too fast, mom just wants to include some enrichment with my meals. Along with my kibble, I had some coconut kefir (both frozen in molds and liquid), @ohmy.dogness salmon bites & freeze dried apple slices from @samandpaisley . Buddy ist nun fast 9 und krank und wir sind dankbar über die Freundschaft der beiden und dankbar über die Zeit. In letzter Zeit ist uns beiden (meinem Mann und mir) immer mehr bewusst geworden das etwas fehlt, und da wir Platz, Zeit und genug Liebe haben ist uns klar geworden da wird noch einer kommen. Allerdings erst in ca 2 Jahren da Makani erst erwachsen und souveräner werden soll, etwas was mir unfassbar wichtig ist BEVOR ein Welpe einzieht. It's not bad enough to warrant a trip to the vet but I cut my paw yesterday and now mom is making me wear this stupid sock. Mom & I took advantage of the gorgeous day out there today & went to my beach. The tide was coming in so we had to be mindful of that & keep an eye on the water. I didn't mind getting wet but it's still a little too cold for mom to have wet feet. In addition to dipping my toes in the water, I had a great time digging in the sand which meant I got a bath when I got home. As a young guy living with bi-lateral hip dysplasia, there are some key things we have to keep in mind: 🐾 a healthy bodyweight is super important 🐾 exercise is both good and bad - low impact and high resistance exercise like swimming is the best 🐾 physiotherapy makes a big difference in my mobility 🐾 proper nutrition is very important 🐾 supplements may help to reduce the symptoms (I get a glucosamine chew 2x a day) We keep all of these things in mind, especially when purchasing treats and chews, and it's why mom was so happy to discover @ohmy.dogness .
