❓What is an accounting period?❓ An accounting period is any time frame that’s used for financial reporting. All transactions that fall within the given date range form part of the statements or reports for that period. It’s often 12 months, but there may be different periods for different business tasks. They are useful for comparing successive time periods indicating how successful a business is, whether it’s hitting its targets and what tax is owed… just to name a few! Accounting periods don’t have to start in January, nor do they have to start on the first of the month. One of the most common periods is the personal tax year that runs from 6th April to 5th April every year. 🌾Annual - may be used for things like end of year reports and income tax returns 🌾Quarterly - may be used for investor reports or VAT returns 🌾Monthly - may be used for things like internal reports and management meetings

🌿First day of the year🌿 What is she talking about - we’re in the first week of April! No, I don’t mean of the calendar year, it’s the first day of the new tax year… Did you know that the personal tax year runs from the 6th April to the 5th April, every year, regardless of whether they fall on a week day, weekend or bank holiday. Weird I know, but it’s just the way it is. You’ve got until 31st January to submit your accounts, so there’s no panic - but tip from the top, don’t leave it until then. So what do you need in order to submit your self assessment: 🌾 Your ten-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) - you should have got this from HMRC when you registered as self-employed 🌾 Your National Insurance number - on that little blue and red card you’ve kept in your purse for years! 🌾 Details of your untaxed income from the tax year - this includes income from self-employment, dividends and interest on shares 🌾 Records of any expenses relating to self-employment - all those receipts and invoices you’ve been diligently filing over the last 12 months 🌾 Any contributions to charity or pensions that might be eligible for tax relief 🌾 P60 or other records showing how much income you received that you’ve already paid tax on - this includes any form of employment during the last 12 months whether is was full time, part time or casual If you’ve scraped through the last twelve months and the thought of doing yourself assessment scares you because you’ve not even thought about the financials, then get in touch. 🤔Bookkeeping Lingo – Types of Business🤔 Bookkeeping tends to be full of all sorts of weird and wonderful lingo, reason 12987 why people find it tricky to get their heads around it. We thought we would start unpacking some of these technical terms so you can understand them. Starting with the common types of business. 🌾A Sole Trader – the simplest structure for a business, owned by one individual who is entirely responsible for the financial status, both in positive and negative situations. If the business cannot pay its debt and taxes, then the individual’s assets may be at risk (This is the worst case scenario and isn’t meant to scare you!) 🌾A Partnership – when more than one self-employed person is working together in an unincorporated business to make a profit, sharing everything on an equal split. Each partner is equally liable for the activities of the business but it is slightly more complicated than being a sole trader. Again, if things go wrong, the partners personal assets may be at risk. 🌾A Limited Company – a separate legal structure offering protection to the owners personal assets. The liabilities lie solely with the company and any legal action is taken against the company rather than the shareholders. It involves a bit more paperwork but the protection is often worth it. 🌾A Limited Liability Company (LLP) – has many features of a normal partnership but with the added security of a limited company, in that its members cannot usually lose more than they invest. It is strong recommended for both business and personal reasons that an agreement is a drawn up prior to launching laying out rights, responsibilities and duties of each partner. When you are starting out, it is important to seek professional advice as to which model is best for you and your business model. You can change the type of business later on down the line, but it’s key to get it right at the start.
