Big Halibut Option for 2024🤩🐟🎉 For the 2024 season, Angling Unlimited offers your group the opportunity to keep a large halibut through the Guided Angler Fish (GAF) program. Your GAF-landed halibut can be any size and it does not count toward your daily bag limit of one per person per day. As a bonus, you can keep a GAF halibut on closed Fridays, which begin July 19 and run through the end of the season. 🚨How It Works: AU leases commercial quotas through an individual quota shareholder or through a broker. The cost of the lease is approximately $400 per GAF permit, which is good for one halibut of any size. This is not cheap, and we need to pass the cost on to interested guests. The supply is not limitless. It can take as long as two weeks to secure additional permits. We at AU will do our best to manage on an “as needed” basis, to assure that all groups can participate if they choose to, however, this will be challenging. New Boat! 🤩👏 AU works hard to stay ahead of the curve, which includes updating our fleet. This year we’re retiring the ever-faithful but aging Storyteller with a brand-new North River. The new boat is currently making its way through production and has a delivery date of early May. We’re sticking with our tried-and-true walkaround cabin design from North River Boats and powering her with a Volvo D6 diesel duoprop power package. The new boat will be slightly longer and wider (32x10) than Storyteller and it will feature an opening side door that makes getting on and off the boat super easy for people of all ages and abilities. A roomy cabin with a diesel heater will add to passenger comfort. The latest electronics from Garmin provide Captain James Baumann an edge in finding fish. The new boat is not officially named yet, but given Captain James’s near-fanatical love of the Minnesota Vikings, the odds-on bet is “Purple Reign.” 💜💛 Do you have a name suggestion for the new boat? Welcome back Conner!😃🎉🎣 Conner Cooke worked for AU as deckhand for Captain Spencer for three summers from 2018-2020. He was fresh out of a four-year stint in the US Marine Corps where he “learned how to walk a straight line and shave my face”. In 2017, after his enlistment concluded, he enrolled in college and began studying biology. He made his way to AU the following summer where he earned high praise from his captain, his coworkers, and his employers. Raised in Chehalis, Washington Conner grew up on a Christmas tree farm bordering the Newakum river. “Due to the convenience of the location, and a fortunate childhood, I started fishing at a very young age. Our house quickly became a hangout spot for all my childhood friends. Fishing has always been a great excuse to get your buddies together and enjoy the outdoors”. Conner earned his captain’s license in the winter of 2020 and made the big decision to move to Sitka full time. AU did not have any vacancies in their captain’s roster at the time, so he began running a boat for another charter outfit in Sitka for the past three years (2021-2023) where he gained much experience at the helm. This year, with the departure of Lev, Conner got the news about an opening at AU. He’s excited to be back on our team. Farewell Captain Lev👋🎣🙂 Ryan Leverington, known to all as Lev, began his career with AU as a deckhand at age 20. He reached the end of this rainbow with us on September 10, 2023. We will miss Lev’s hard work, exceptional fishing skills, good nature and his excellent rapport with guests. He has been a valuable player on the AU team for over a decade and we all wish him continued success as he enters a new era in his life. We’ll let Lev say the rest in his own words: “What a ride it has been! When I started at AU 11 years ago as a 20-year-old deckhand, I never would have envisioned how much it would change my life. Angling Unlimited and Sitka grew on me quickly and after a couple seasons I knew it was going to be more than just a summer job during college, I was hooked. It quickly grew into a passion for me. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to take the helm and show family, friends, and clients who became friends, the beauty and bounty Sitka has to offer. New boat! 😃🎉🛥️ AU continues to refine and improve our product, including regularly replacing older boats with the latest and greatest from North River. This winter we’re retiring Storyteller, a boat on which Captain James has made a lot of happy memories. The new boat will be very similar to Aurora and Raefen – a 32-foot North River, full walkaround with a Volvo diesel duo-prop power package, equipped with the most advanced electronics. Captain James starts a new chapter of his career on this boat which is yet unnamed. New addition to the AU Family! 👶🏻🍼 They met on the job at AU and Spencer flew all the way from Sitka to Minnesota for their first date. On October 4, Captain Spencer Chute and wife Alli (former AUhostess) welcomed Nora Rose Chute into the world. Born in Sitka, she’s their second, joining sister Lauren. Nora weighed 7 pounds – 7 ounces and was 20.5 inches long at birth. Mother and baby are healthy and happy. The proud dad reports that “We are enjoying the beautiful Sitka fall weather and new baby Nora has already been on the boat to see whales and hear the ocean sounds.” How could Nora have a better start than that? Book’em!😃🐟✈️🎣 🎣Fishing Dates: It’s the perfect time of the year to book your next fishing trip with AU. We still have an excellent selection of prime-time king dates from mid-May through mid-June. We also have openings in early July for a mix of kings and silvers. Last but not least, we have some space in September, the best time to land the biggest silvers of the year. Halibut, rockfish, and assorted others are available throughout our season. ✈️Air Travel: Alaska Airlines and Delta serve Sitka with direct flights from Seattle. Booking early assures that you get the flights that best suit your travel fishing dates and travel plans. The rates seem to change over the course of the winter, sometimes up, sometimes down – but the flights do fill up early. Once you’ve booked dates with AU, we recommend that you stay on top of what’s happening with airline schedules and rates. An early purchase is often a good idea. Get to know Kaehukai: 🐟Why Alaska?: As a kid, I grew up without running water or electricity on Niʻaupala fishpond on Molokaʻi. Living off the grid taught losts of skills and values that I feel Angling Unlimited demonstrates. I am so excited to be able to be apart of this nostalgic opportunity in such a beautiful and positive atmosphere. I cannot wait for the experiences to start! 🐟Off-season: During the offseason, I am collegiate volleyball player and student at Eastern Washington University. I am studying in Recreation and Tourism Management as well as sports management. I hope this upcoming offseason, I will be continuing my schooling as a graduate student or/and furthering my career within sports or recreation. 🐟Hobbies: I love baking sweets, ocean sports, fishing, hiking, painting, and traveling.
