Fascinating evening @scpltd for the John Pawson in conversation with Ben Spriggs. I love his minimalist work and use of light in his projects. He is an essentialist rather than a minimalist. The sensation of space = the physical appreciation of the feelings the space gives / exciting and relaxing at the same time. How he feels ever project is personal and designed in a way he would love. Plus loved hearing about his monastery project, how they own nothing but their watch and underpants, so he wanted to give them the perfect spaces, desks, plates and cutlery. London has so much going on for #LDF23 and #SDT23 #ShoreditchDesignTriangle and #Focus23. #SDT23 is in full swing, as we highlight @ruup.and.form. ⁠ ⁠ Ruup & Form will be hosting a 'Fierce Energy -Meet the Artist' evening tonight at 6:30 PM. ⁠ ⁠ Naomi Mcintosh created her new series – Seeds. The new group of work explores the possibility, the power and potential of planting a seed. The sculptures celebrate cycles of growth. The repetitious beech wood forms are meticulously and carefully threaded so they become tapestries and screens of ripples and vibrations. Each arch symbolises extraordinary energy in a single seed. PLAY 🛝 These were large custom plinths we machined for the exhibition PLAY as part of London Design Festival @l_d_f_official 2023 - put on as a joint show by @artpractice.studio @shoreditchdt @opticalarts.studio @dantobinsmith @maria_lax_ @eatockdaniel Based around the theme of Play, these plinths allow people to rotate the artwork installed on the centre, using a lazy susan type of rig. Solid Floor has been supplying and installing bespoke timber flooring for over twenty-five years. Acclaimed in equal measure for the variety and distinctiveness of its floors, Solid Floor is frequently specified by many of the UK’s leading architects and designers. For SDT23, Solid Floor has gathered a selection of designers from diverse fields and crafts and given them a unique task.  The assignment, handed to this talented crew, was to design and create novel objects utilising discarded bits – leftovers and offcuts from installations – of Solid Floor’s luxurious timber flooring.  While generally considered waste on the one hand, this material has inherent beauty, not to mention many uses, on the other. The exhibition’s objective is to make use of waste flooring material that would otherwise be thrown away, via new-designed objects that not only showcase the beauty of the different timber floors with their various textures and colours but also reveal the ingenuity of the designers themselves. It is Solid Floor’s desire, through the exhibition, to forge long-term relationships with a community of designers who can use this waste flooring on a regular basis as a medium for their art. I am very pleased to be showing a small selection of my recent work at the wonderful @maxradfordgallery at an exhibition starting on Saturday 16/09/23 titled GREYSCALE. I am very grateful to Max Radford for choosing to show my work and am really looking forward to the private view on Tuesday 19th September. Please come along to see my work as well as amazing work by many other excellent artists and designers! All of my work that will be shown is part of my Clink Street ‘88 series. Through the summer of 1988, in a basement in Clink Street, an unlikely series of Acid House raves and parties changed the face of youth culture in the UK. Taking place beneath the then derelict Soho Wharf, only a few meters back from the Thames foreshore, the series of “RIP Parties” were the birth place of Acid House music in Britain and for many it was the first time they had heard this music. Clink Street ‘88 is a project whose aim is to celebrate this important cultural event. Responding to this rare example of euphoria, and in recognition that the spontaneous and unplanned can sometimes lead to remarkable things, this series seeks to reflect on the experiences ravers had, and how momentarily the urban landscape of this secluded part of London changed from a disused wasteland into a pleasure-ground of music and joy. The summer of 1988 was often referred to as “the second summer of love” – raves across London brought people together from all walks of life in a type of cerebration that hadn’t been seen before. These events in Clink Street have been overlooked from mainstream historical research and their significance deserves recognition. The studio is super busy this week prepping for three shows during #londondesignfestival Here comes the timber for the stage we’re building as part of the @greengradsuk Hub at Heal’s talks space this weekend. We’re already talking with @renee_materials who are exhibiting at the event about how we can distribute and share these materials after the event to avoid waste. SCP's London Design Festival show Soft Power is part of The Shoreditch Design Triangle, which starts a week tomorrow. We're excited to see so many local design pioneers and leading lights in the industry on the programme, including:⁠ ⁠ Vitra, who are presenting Hackability of the Stool, featuring 100 ideas for altering the iconic Stool 60, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933. On show at the Vitra and Artek Tramshed showroom round the corner on Rivington Street. ⁠ ⁠ Donna Wilson, who is celebrating 20 years, is joined on 18th September by three creative industry veterans, each with their own unique experiences and areas of expertise to share. They are Louise Lockhart, illustrator and founder of The Printed Peanut⁠, Sara Dalrymple, sales trainer and mentor for online business owners⁠, and our very own Tim Rumney, Head of Brand at SCP. Happy to introduce London Green Wood to the line-up of #SDT23 participants. ⁠ ⁠ They are exhibiting a selection of hand-made chairs, all made from fresh logs from tree surgeons.
