In her second solo exhibition at Messums London, the Chinese-British photographer Yan Wang Preston presents new works that explore the complexities of cultural migration by restaging iconic artworks in different geopolitical and cultural contexts. The series includes the photographic and performative restaging of artworks such as ‘To Add a Metre to an Anonymous Mountain, 1995’, ‘Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, 1817’, and ‘Olympia,1863’, the latter featuring the first decolonial study of the botanical details in Manet’s painting. Already three years in the making, 'Three Easier Pieces' is the debut appearance of the works. April 26th. I had booked another of the contemporary art courses, and my goal was to be well enough to make it. Well, it was tiring, but I'm so happy I managed it. We started off at Somerset House, where the works of three artists in residence were exhibited in the tiny Gallery 31. My favourite was probably the 3D printed porcelain sculptures by an artist called Enore, and I particularly liked the hands that felt like they were beckoning you in. We then walked across Waterloo Bridge to the National Theatre and met an exhibiting photographer, Amelia Lancaster. This ‘BIG’ exhibition is happening close by to Waltham Forest in neighbouring Newham. A few past (and future) exhibitors from our @elmswindowgallery are showing their large pieces of work. At Elms we love showing larger work and try to fill the space with a variety of different mediums and scales, but you can’t change the dimensions. It’s just the way measurements work and our windows are only so big 😂 The Tower Gallery @towergallery.e13 have the capacity to show really Big Art-works, as they have tons of huge wall space that surrounds a really wide staircase that leads you up the tower (until you pass out). Seriously!!! It is not for the faint hearted. BUT it is an extraordinary building and anyone who gets the chance to exhibit there - really should do, because it’s truly something special inside.
