For today's post we travel a few miles south of the Columbia Gorge to Ramona Falls, a beautiful 120 foot waterfall on the west side of Oregon's Mount Hood. Thousands of people visit Ramona Falls every year, especially on summer weekends. Anyone who invests the time and effort to hike to the waterfall expects (and should be able) to take an unobstructed photo. Unfortunately last weekend an enterprising photographer decided to use the waterfall as a backdrop for outdoor portraits. We have nothing against outdoor/nature portraits, but doing that at Ramona Falls on a summer weekend is incredibly selfish and misguided. This photo session lasted for quite some time (see second photo for an example), thus preventing other visitors from taking their own photographs. Lugging a heavy pack full of camera gear on a 7 mile round-trip hike does not entitle someone to monopolize a waterfall on PUBLIC property. Apparently this photographer also used a drone to shoot video footage at the waterfall (and wasn’t shy about proclaiming that fact on their Instagram page). Drones are considered “motorized vehicles”, which are prohibited in designated Wilderness areas. Ramona Falls is located in the Mount Hood Wilderness area; therefore any drone usage at that location is illegal. Ignorantia juris non excusat. We have also heard reports (though no photographs to document) that some people have actually CLIMBED upon the mossy rocks on the left side of waterfall. No amount of likes is worth the resource damage caused by this behavior.
