Most people think about is; I, me, myself, and mine. No longer are we concerned about the needs of others, nor do we give to the poor. And if we do, it is often for public recognition which God does not delight in. In Matthew 6:3-4 the bible says “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Selfishness is putting your own desires and wants above the needs of others; it is loving yourself and seeking your own gain while ignoring others. By this definition, selfishness is the opposite of God and His perfectly loving character. Because of this, those who live selfishly do not abide in God (1 John 3:17). The Bible clearly teaches God’s people to live contrary to this pattern of selfishness by serving others and denying oneself, and that those who practice selfishness only have temporal gain and no lasting satisfaction. Paul beautifully reminds us that Christ laid down his entitlements so that we might share in his glory (Philippians 2:5–8). As Christians, we should not only trust God when we don’t get what we want. We should also follow the example of our Savior and choose to give up what we think we deserve. I've been thinking lately about boundaries - the wrong kind of boundaries- and love. Sometimes what we call boundaries is selfishness. Sometimes what we call love is an unwillingness to speak the truth and draw a much-needed line. Boundaries aren't selfish or wrong in of themselves. Like anything else, they can be used well or misused. Today I'm only talking about the misuse of boundaries, the kind poorly placed against others. That's my disclaimer for what I'm about to say. It's easy to excuse selfishness as boundaries. But it's also easy to claim we're acting in love, being sacrificial for others sakes, when really, we won't let them go or speak the truth needed. Both can be selfish. Both can be loving. It isn't always easy to tell the difference, not in others lives, not in our own. But that's where God gives us His word to divide within our own hearts the truth of our motives. He reveals to us the truth we struggle to see, and He enables us to act with the right motives. The insatiable ego need for unending wealth and the illusion of power has climbed the tower of Babel only to plummet, again and again into despair and humiliation. It appears to be happening again. Those who are unwilling to face their addiction to wealth, and their constant accumulation of more at the expense of others, sooner or later must face the fall. It happened in 1929 setting off The Great Depression, and it has happened on a smaller scale multiple times since then with repeated recessions. What will it take for those who have an addiction to greed to wake up and realize that there is no way that constant consumption can sustain itself? Addiction is a ferocious need to seek inner peace from an external source, a confusion of pleasure with happiness, and a bottomless pit of need that nothing could ever fill. It takes many forms from drug addiction to the insatiable need for accumulation. As Forrest Gump said, “After a while, it’s just for show.” When someone has more wealth than they could ever spend in a thousand lifetimes, but they still want more, that is addiction. It is an attempt to fill an inner emptiness from an external source. The problem is that no external source can ever fill an inner emptiness, and meanwhile, innocents suffer at the expense of the addiction. This amounts to the human ego run wild. It amounts to a need to prove status over worthiness, a need to prove identity over humanity. The problem is that none of us is here alone. None of us can do anything without affecting others. None of us can feed a gluttonous addiction without depriving others, or even harming others. So many women have been raised to put the needs of others before their own. We were taught that it’s selfishness if we don’t think about everyone else first. This has led to generations of women who feel guilty if they ever do something for themselves. We worry that someone else is missing out if we allow ourselves to go first.
