As a professional musician, I always get a little bit excited when I first start introducing Kodaly notation to my oldest students. By the time they go off to school, they will recognise and play most crochet/ quaver simple rhythms, recognise a rest in the music and have a knowledge of the difference families in an orchestra and the main instruments. This international women’s day I want to give a shout out to all the amazing women attending our classes. We have mums, grandmas, childminders, babysitters, aunties, stepmoms, you name it, attending our sessions. Some are stay home mums others are career mums, flexible working mums, caring for a child is their profession… the truth is, none of this matters. They are women who are doing something special with their (or others’) children and who are amazing in their individual ways. Today I had the pleasure of gathering a small group of just some of the fantastic women (from all over the world) that we have at all our venues. Strong, gorgeous, like-minded, fabulous women! Do you know what Tower Bridge, Full Moon and Monkey Music have in similarities today? Well, the Full Moon in March occurs this Tuesday at 12:40 GMT. This Full Moon is called Worm Moon 🐛, which refers to the earthworms that appear when the soil warms up. We are talking about a wiggly worm in our classes this week so it is all a big coincidence! Oh and if the clouds let us, Tower Bridge might be a wonderful spot to see this full moon in its glory! The Worm Moon is the last Full Moon of winter. In 2023, the Spring Equinox will take place on Monday 20 March. The flowers are already blooming at Monkey Music! We will always encourage our children to sit and listen but we also respect that they might prefer to move. After all, they are still watching and listening to what we do. Our funny and precious Heigh-Hoers (one-year-olds) are no longer a baby, but not a big kid. To help avoid tricky moments, it’s important to understand what your toddler dislikes. Keep in mind that your toddler’s brain is still developing, so they may have trouble expressing and managing their intense emotions. But by being aware of their preferences, you can provide them with the support they need. When they don’t engage during our sessions, it is not because they are not enjoying themselves but because they can be: ✔️feeling hungry and tired ✔️struggling with not being able to do something ✔️new things may be challenging ✔️craving independence and power but not getting it At Monkey Music we love this age group and are happy to help and to encourage your precious little ones to thrive. There is nothing better for a child but to have a supportive carer who attends a class with them, engage by supporting them to copy what we do and then let the child try and do things themselves. Did you know that by 11 months children are seeking autonomy and by being shown what to do and then let them do things themselves gives them great pleasure and more willingness to continue learning? We provide 30 minutes of precious time together so make the most of it!
