Space bending 2 years ago i stumbled on a 3d black hole tutorial for blender, which got me thinking of the concept of space/ light bending in 3d. Over time I did some experiments and this is one of the techniques that stuck with me. It uses a custom lens which distorts the light in such a way so that the resulting image doesnt run out of the boundaries of the undistorted image of the object. Or simply said duplicate the rock, scale is by .5 to the pos of the camera and set material to refractive :D And since the caption is space bending, it also relates to the technique used to generate the animated rock loocking thing by offsetting the sample position of a fog volume with a noise. From day to night, from still to life. A commercial we did with SEK for Veikkaus, where we combined 3D and 2D animation. The first shot was created in 3D, matching the variating field texts of the second top-view shot. The top-view shot was created in 2D from a still daylight image of a stadium. The image was sliced, diced and recreated in many parts into various levels of layers, creating a realistic looking parallax effect when the camera pulls up. 3D lights, animated fogs and a few animated cars were added to finish up the illusion.
