Terremoto La Postal in collaboration with platform Sin Cinta Previa co-presents a visual art project by Cuban visual artist Ricardo Miguel Hernandez Acevedo, curated by Art Historian and Curator Yenny Hernández Valdés, both based in Havana, Cuba. "Under the effects of power" is an investigation and curatorial proposal that is anchored in revealing through interdisciplinarity and artistic versatility the historical and daily tensions that victim societies have suffered - and sometimes even as victimizers as a result of the attitudes of subjects with authoritarian personality - of despotisms, inconsistencies and dystopias. "Nothing new under the sun" is the first iteration of 4 conceived for this exhibition, in collaboration with the platform “Sin Cinta Previa”. It consists of the presentation of three audiovisual materials and a series of lobbycards. The videos encompass shots of Havana sunsets captured from the same vantage point. Each video aims to give voice to the image of Luis XIV, of members of Native American communities and Egyptians, from the Cuban urban and social visuality; all to verify that nothing is new under the sun, that history repeats itself over and over again. Available online since August 19th, 2021. Online venue: https://sincintaprevia.com/ Terremoto is a cultural platform dedicated to critical thinking around contemporary art that takes place in «the Americas» with an editorial focus that starts from anti-patriarchal and anti-colonial knowledge that encourages artistic and curatorial practices. #terremotomagazine #terremotolapostal #sincintaprevia #cuba #contemporarycubanart #cubanphotography #latinamericanphotography #cubancuratorialproject #collage #collageart #vintagephotography #visualartproject #ricardomiguelhernandezart #yennyhernandezvaldescuratorialwork #latinxart #latinxartproject

Taste of “Jamaica y Tamarindo” Chicago Premiere + Q&A with director Ebony Bailey Q&A: Sat. July 25, 2020 at 6:30 PM - Subscribe to the filmfront (@filmfront) newsletter for event Q&A Zoom link and VOD (video on demand) links to the films available July 20-25, 2020 or email [email protected] for details. As a self-identified “Blaxican,” Ebony Bailey delves into various anomalies at the heart of anti-blackness in Mexican culture––but from a place of deep love and respect for her heritage and pride in her identities. Her body of documentary video work, and especially the premiere of her brand new short, “Jamaica y Tamarindo,” explores just how inherently Black or afro-descendant Mexican culture is already at its core. Bailey’s work is light, lyrical, humane and poignant. Watching her films one is drawn in by learning to challenge misconceptions through the sheer artistry and levity of her lens, her decisive cuts, and her marvelous ability as a storyteller. Join us for a discussion with the award winning documentarian Ebony Bailey (@ebonymarieb) and local programmer, Janelle Ayana Miller (@sonicplum), featuring the Chicago premiere of “Jamaica y Tamarindo” (2019) with an added bonus; her latest music video “Atolito con el dedo” (2020) for the AfroMexican band Aguaje Ensamble (@aguaje.ensamble). This screening is curated by Jose Luis Benavides (@lu3ge) as part of the ongoing series #SinCintaPrevia and is made possible by the generous support of Propeller Fund (@thepropellerfund). How do you feel? How’s your family doing? How are you coping with the pandemic? These questions, life lines, and check-ins have become vital to our survival. But survival seems a strange word these days. Survival is not the same as “to survive” or “surviving” which sound more present tense, more actual, now, and ongoing. Amidst this never-ending pandemic, an attack on our livelihoods, our friends and family, our economic stability, our sense of place and the solvency of our communities remains in question. We’re all just trying to keep it together. Trying to survive.” Jose Luis Benavides Sin Cinta Previa This is the last accepted project proposal submitted from the SCP+C Open Call 2020 program juried by Malia Haines-Stewart, Giselle Mira-Diaz and Santiago X, supported by the Propeller Fund. 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙥𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨: 𝙈á𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙖 𝙤𝙩𝙧𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞ó𝙣, 2020 𝙞𝙣 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨. I'm happy to share that soon one of these videos will be shown via #sincintaprevia at #chuquimarca projects, Chicago and the internet. Stay tuned to know the dates. The moving images that are reflected and projected through my wearables, are exploring the visual limits of landscape, not only as an image, but as a living entity that can be embodied. The documentation of these wearables on video has been extremely relevant for me, not only as a way to show what these objects are, but as a chance to unfold other narrations. The video as an artistic medium, helps me to open up questions, instead of just presenting visual reenactments or statements. Working with the materiality of video, and exploring the concept of moving images—outside the convention of film recording machines—have meant to me, to learn how to open my eyes and find others ways of seeing. By breaking conventional narratives of film as language, I have been able to open a space of critical contemplation, mediated by the uncertainty felt when someone is watching my videos, and asks what they are witnessing. #movingimages #performativesculptures #wereables #landscape #embodiedartpractices #videoart #videoartist

Expect People to be Exhausted by Chucho Ocampo (2020) 13 min 19 sec. “Castillo is an artistic research exercise that superimposes information between systems that have no apparent or physical manifestation of interdependence but are capable of connecting despite borders. The research revolves around the movement of human and non human bodies and their relations with ephemeral structures and displays of communication as well as how ideas travel and relate to them. The research exercise explores and superimposes a thread of traveling ideas that deal with displacement and overlapping of symbols, ideologies, cultural practices and language.” Watch the full video and the full Tempo falacioso; Superimposiciones botánicas video program on sincintaprevia.com. The Density of Breath by Nancy D. Valladares (2020) 13 min 04 sec. Shot with an electronic microscope,The Density of Breath is a meditation on plant agency, and botanical representation. What does a seed know about the flavor of the atmosphere; about the texture of the air and its currents, about its ebbs and flows, that we do not? Seeds learned to move in the currents of the ocean and the wind, to float on water and air, to become the first stowaways and hitchhikers. In pursuit of plant matter and the expansion of the human visual apparatus, technologies of plant transportation and representation marked a pivotal ecological and cognitive shift. Paisagens Ficcionais [Fictional Landscapes] by Luíza Bastos Lages (2020) 24 min 23 sec. “Paisagens Fictionais [Fictional Landscapes] interrogates the ephemerality of the contemporary landscape, and its transformation, as a means as well as a product of a hegemonic and fallacious project of modernity: the idea of progress. The work departs from a place in memory, the continuous dilapidation of mining landscapes of a stretch of the Iron Quadrangle, one of the major mineral provinces in the world, located in Minas Gerais, Brazil, the place where I grew up.” Watch the full video and the full Tempo falacioso; Superimposiciones botánicas video program on sincintaprevia.com. Tempo falacioso; Superimposiciones botánicas is a selection of video works by artists Luiza Bastos Lages, Chucho Ocampo and Nancy D. Valladares. This program looks at the technologies and infrastructures that sustained the colonial project, disseminated euro-western epistemologies, and transported colonial projects throughout Latin America. By layering archive footage and oral traditions, history is retold through the alchemy of gunpowder, the slow melting of a pillar of ice, and microscopic worlds of botanical images. This online feature was awarded and selected from our juried SCP+C Open Call 2020. Sin Cinta Previa Program: TOMORROW up until Saturday, July 25th, filmmaker Ebony Bailey’s newest film JAMAICA Y TAMARINDO along with other short films will be screening online and co-presented via fimfront. A zoom conversation is scheduled between artist and curator Ebony Bailey and Janelle Miller on Saturday, July 25th at 6:30pm CT. Sign up for filmfront’s newsletter to receive zoom info. This screening was programmed by Sin Cinta Previa, Chuquimarca’s Propeller Fund collaborator. @ebonymarieb @sonicplum @lu3ge @filmfront @thepropellerfund - Director's statement: "I made this film as a way to reaffirm my own identity as a Black-Mexican-American, or as I like to say, a “Blaxican.” My mother is Mexican-American and my father is African-American. All of my life, my Mexican side was negated because of my Black features. “A Black girl cannot be Mexican,” they would tell me. These words have caused me to reflect on the role that Blackness plays in Mexican identity. What does it mean to be Mexican? JAMAICA Y TAMARINDO: AFRO TRADITION IN THE HEART OF MEXICO illustrates the existence of African heritage in everyday aspects of Mexican culture. The jamaica hibiscus flower and tamarind are two popular ingredients in Mexico, but many are not aware that these two plants have origins in Africa. Jamaica and tamarind then become a metaphor for the invisibilization of Mexico’s African heritage—in the film we meet Afro-Mexicans from different walks of life who speak about their own identities and experiences. For me, someone who grew up drinking agua de jamaica and eating spicy tamarindo candies, this film has allowed me to share a bit of my experience through the testimonies of other Afro-Mexicans. We aim for this film to serve as a platform of discussion in the global conversation of diversity and inclusion."

@sincintaprevia Taste of “Jamaica y Tamarindo” Chicago Premiere + Q&A with director Ebony Bailey Q&A: Sat. Special thanks to EPF Media (@epfmedia).
