Nathaniel Underwood @nathaniel_underwoodart is one of 34 artists who generously created a painting for The Columbus Crossing Borders Project. As explained in these photos, his painting (shown in partial detail in the first image) crosses borders with a painting by artist @dgentiliniart on the left and a painting by @codyheichel on the right. Nathaniel says this about his contribution to the exhibit: "This painting is an interpretation of the loss of cultural identity through societal integration. The subject, Rahel Tesfamichael is a refugee of Eritrea 1983 and United States citizen 2008. Her immigration story serves as a positive example of how a nation should embrace those looking for refuge. However, this painting seeks to examine what was lost within that process. The left figure painted within grisaille method represents the fossil or unawake potential of heritage and culture. The right figure that is conscious and full of color begins to diffuse. The fracturing of this figure represents erosion of identity by means of cultural assimilation. The westernization of a foreign person is not only their loss. It is the loss of the nation that does not value diversity.
