Wait, don’t scroll yet! I know this poor arrowhead vine looks real sad. It’s been staring me down every day after I get home from work and I’ve been feeling guilty about not caring for it, but I thought tonight would be a great opportunity to have a #vulnerable moment and encourage you not to give up on your plants! If my plant is sick, I usually do a few things as a diagnostic method. 1. Check for bugs. If you’re losing a ton of leaves very suddenly, it’s a good idea to check for those nasty lil pests. They could be eating the plant from the roots, they could be eating it from the leaves, they could be eating it all over. Who knows? Do a thorough check of your plant before doing anything else, and if you think there might be bugs, quarantine the plant immediately. 2. Look at the roots. If they’re brown and mushy, you are likely the victim of root rot. Stay tuned for upcoming posts on how to tackle that issue. 3. Check the location of the plant. Is it getting too much light? Not enough? Is it by a window with a bad seal that lets in cold air? Is it close to a vent that blows air on it all day? All could be factors of why your plant isn’t happy. 4. It’s getting colder, and sometimes plants kill off certain parts to retain more energy for dormancy in the winter. This is totally normal in the lifecycle of any plant and isn’t anything to be concerned about. Luckily, number 4 was the issue I was having with this little guy. I trimmed him back (scroll for pictures), gave him a good drink of water, and will put him back in his home and keep an eye on him for the next few weeks.
