Sage Fam, this is a good friend of mine who is facing the streets with her four children. Reconciliation has failed them. Homeless on her ancestral, traditional, current, and stolen territories. They make me feel like my family is just another number, and we’re like one millionth in line to potentially to maybe (get help),” said Shadae Johnson, a mom with four young children. “We just don’t feel like there’s any importance in sheltering my family.” Johnson is currently living in a hotel suite in Richmond with her children, who range in age from seven weeks to 12 years old, thanks to Jordan’s Principle funding for First Nations children. But Johnson and her children are still facing the constant threat of displacement. The funding, coordinated by Indigenous Services Canada, was initially approved for three months. It was then addressed on a month-by-month basis — until this week. It is also Red Dress Day, a campaign started by Métis artist Jamie Black and has been used to symbolize the thousands of MMIWGT2S. Canada’s genocide on Indigenous people has been calculated, purposeful, and deliberate. “The National Inquiry’s Final Report reveals that persistent and deliberate human and Indigenous rights violations and abuses are the root cause behind Canada’s staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people.” I will link the report in my bio and stories. Please read it. The report makes specific calls to justice that the government of Canada have been slow to move on if at all, and in fact the insistence on violence against Indigenous women persists. “Throughout this report, and as witnesses shared, we convey truths about state actions and inactions rooted in colonialism and colonial ideologies, built on the presumption of superiority, and utilized to maintain power and control over the land and the people by oppression and, in many cases, by eliminating them.” — Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Today across so called Canada, thousands of people will be gathering to honour their stolen family members. In 2023, we collaborated with @niwrc to create an art piece inspired by the National Week of Action for MMIW. This initiative is a response to the pressing and persistent crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) in the country. The creation of “No More Stolen Sisters” was a deliberate act of reflection on the historical continuance of this crisis and the solidarity stance with the daughters, sisters, mothers, and aunties lost from their communities. Our design features a triadic color palette of red, violet, and purple, representing the broad spectrum of violence faced by Native women and children across Tribal nations and Native Hawaiian communities. The use of vivid, deeply saturated colors highlights the grave reality these families endure. These colors are bold and impactful, symbolizing the resolute voices of advocates who stand firm against silence. NIWRC’s Etsy shop now offers a variety of items with this design, and all net proceeds will support NIWRC’s efforts to end violence against Native women and children. Hi Sage Fam, If you didn’t know, Jacob @cedarhotsauce and I have been in Ontario to visit his Mother this past week. She is a wonderful humanitarian and activist and I can see where Jacob gets his community care spirit from! 😍 I am so honoured to join her today on her weekly routine. First we picked up loads of groceries. We then drove throughout the city to the homes of folks who need food assistance. Then to one of the many local encampments that home fur babies as well as humans. ⛺️⛺️⛺️ Mom doesn’t get paid to do this, she even spends out of her own pocket to support her community. How serendipitous to find a partner raised with the same values as me. 🥰 Ontario under the Ford government is experiencing a homelessness crisis, he says “we can’t have these people taking over parks….they have to move on”. Where would you like them to go? ⛺️⛺️⛺️ Guelph is ranked the ninth most expensive rent in so-called Canada, one bedrooms averaging $2078 with income assistance for shelter portions at $390. It’s simple math, no one can survive and Ford wants them out of sight. I had $200 left in my reserves from our last mutual aid round up and I’ve donated it to her. April, 12th, 1876- the Indian Act came in to power in so called Canada. This racist piece of legislation was created to assimilate Indigenous people into “Canadian” culture. It created the reservation system which took us out of participating in our previously thriving economies. The Indian Act still governs us today. Today Indigenous entrepreneurs are making a massive return and upraising; taking the economy by storm. Our crew is at Sherwood Park Elementary in Tsleil-Waututh territory to teach and share about Indigenous excellence with 11 and 12 year old students. Tracy Ridler @tracyarrr spoke about her hand in economic reconciliation. ✊🏽 Jacob from @cedarhotsauce shared his Mango Habanero hot sauce with the excited kids! 🥵 My niece Isabelle shared about her hockey experience and the awards and scholarships she receives. 🏒 And I led a bath bomb workshop 🥰 Indigenous people are worthy. I am so honoured to showcase their artwork at 1312. ✊🏽✊🏽 Smokey Devil – Underworld Street Reporter is a colourful look at the life of a renowned artist and icon from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside who is known for his murals depicting the toxic drug crisis, memorials, MMIWG2S and more. Smokey’s story explains his 30 years of experience as a graffiti artist and drug user who has lost hundreds of friends and family due to the worst overdose crisis in Canadian history. While raising awareness in his community for people without access to news or internet, he gives us unrestricted access to one of the most marginalized neighbourhoods in Canada where he paints the streets in broad daylight with no fear of repercussions. We follow Smokey’s journey from an adolescent growing up in the prison system to a community activist whose contribution was recognized by the mayor of Vancouver in 2023, when he officially proclaimed March 11th as “Smokey D Day.” Don’t miss this rare opportunity to watch this incredible story and hear from some of the Downtown Eastside’s champions. We have made the tickets free but are hoping to raise money to get Smokey’s story to a broader audience and increase awareness about the worst toxic drug crisis in Canadian history.
