Rainbow, Tears and Blood; listed on my site. *potential triggers* I had to search but it was too easy, MMIW will forever be a subject close to me. The tears and blood, The threats of death, The raging abuse, That sirens never saved us, I almost couldn’t see, the significance of MMIP to me.. Break the silence to the violence, It could’ve been you, It could’ve been me. I grew up in a home with abuse, I feared for my mom’s safety more than anything. This caused so much anger towards my dad that it translated to reckless bravery, I began standing up for myself and my mom by speaking up and fighting back. There’s danger in homes and so often it should be apparent. I never hid what happened, I made reports to the elementary social worker, I openly wrote about the pain and abuse through high school. The cops came to our house so many times. None of this prompted anything and I always wished something would be done. How many other families are living in violence and mandatory reporters aren’t doing their civic duty? There is no excuse for the many ways we are let down as indigenous peoples. I have a few more “artistic” MMIP earrings to make but these took longer than expected. So May 5 will pass before the others are complete. In 2023, we collaborated with @niwrc to create an art piece inspired by the National Week of Action for MMIW. This initiative is a response to the pressing and persistent crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) in the country. The creation of “No More Stolen Sisters” was a deliberate act of reflection on the historical continuance of this crisis and the solidarity stance with the daughters, sisters, mothers, and aunties lost from their communities. Our design features a triadic color palette of red, violet, and purple, representing the broad spectrum of violence faced by Native women and children across Tribal nations and Native Hawaiian communities. The use of vivid, deeply saturated colors highlights the grave reality these families endure. These colors are bold and impactful, symbolizing the resolute voices of advocates who stand firm against silence. They catch the light so beautifully ❤️🖤 I’m feeling a bit restless today, so I’m actually going to put my beads away and go put some miles on my bike. Bike riding is one of my favorite ‘wellness tools’ that almost always helps me feel settled so I can focus and bead….. so much so, that I’m investing in a fat tire bike this year 🎉 I have a ‘rule of three’ when it comes to beading- if I use wrong number of beads or have broken beads/thread/needles or tangles/knots in my thread or I drop beads (the list goes on and on lol)- if any one of those things happen three times, I have to step away from beading and do something else. I have to. This is one of those things that I’ve learned about myself with time- I can’t force myself to bead and I can’t bead through certain emotions. I spent so long disconnected from myself and numb from the world that I still sometimes can’t tell when I’m feeling off….. but there are always little signs that inevitably manifest in my beading. So, I’m going to get some fresh air and move my body…. Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum and the Sheldon Jackson Museum is pleased to announce the selection of the Alaska Native artists for this year’s Alaska Native Artist Residency Program. Selected from a pool of applicants, these artists will come to the museum from all over the state to share their art forms and culture over the course of five months. Between June and the end of October, the Sheldon Jackson Museum Alaska Native artists-in-residence will work in the museum gallery, provide free hands-on classes teaching their art forms, give lectures, and provide the museum with material culture consultations on artifacts. Artists-in-residence will connect the public to their culture(s) through creation of art in an open studio-like format. Visitors will have opportunities to engage with artists and learn about Alaska Native traditions, art forms, artists’ techniques, and sources of inspiration.
