Saturday. Or, “Straturday”. Or, “freakin Straturday”. There’s a side to my playing that strongly reflects Mark Knopfler’s influence. Hearing him in 1979 on WNEW FM while waiting in the car, spun me around big time. Over the years I became more aware of the stuff that had influenced him. JJCale’s subtle vocal delivery and simple but eloquent guitar playing kind of eluded me for a long time. Probably because I’ve never been excited to play his “The Breeze”. But, his collaborations album with Clapton was good, and after he passed away, the tribute album with Knopfler, and Clapton made it to my Pandora feed. Continuing the “songs that I play from time to time”, “Coming Back To Life”. Which, I play probably once every year. This one is from Pink Floyd. But, I can’t claim to have heard them do it. My introduction came from seeing Gilmour do it as part of that “Strat Pack” show from a long time ago. He was using his 001 Blonde Strat that he got from Seymour Duncan, that was either a really old guitar or was a partscaster assembled out of old parts. We’ll never know. Because It was auctioned off along with the number 1 black Strat a few years back. Anyway, The intro on the video from the show was “Marooned” which leads into “Coming Back To Life”. There is also a version from Pompei. It’s good. And, there is a backing track sans guitar. But, I like the “Stat Pack” version better. I had an empty house this evening. And, as it would be a relatively rare happenstance I retired to the “guitar grotto” to finally change the strings on the Robert Cray Strat. They are still the strings that came on it when Fender shipped it last summer. They’re terrible. They actually make your fingertips black! BUT I didn’t do it. Why? I got distracted and started playing songs that I love to play. There are a few. But, I won’t bombard the kind people that listen, watch and comment on my little videos with a “set”. Here’s the first. “Unchained Melody” by Alex North and Hy Zaret. Mostly known by the Righteous Brother’s huge hit. I play it a couple times a year. I remember hearing it as a little kid in the car with my family. I’d long forgotten it until I discovered Arlen Roth’s version on his incredible album, “Toolin Around Woodstock” from a while ago. I wouldn’t attempt to emulate Arlen’s multi genre, technically brilliant and loaded with clever “tricks” take on this one. But, it inspired me. So, a “Tele-Tuesday” with no Tele. “There are no rules! We make the rules”… according to Mel ( as spoken to Carl). Some “Straturday” malarkey cause, it’s, oh, whatever. Anyway, I played some things back a ways ( like half a year ago) and somebody sent me a pm about how what l’d played reminded him or her of the late great Roy Buchanan. Obviously, I was flattered. Roy was an incredible player. And, I thanked them. Unfortunately, it didn’t end there. I got that old story about how in 1969 The Rolling Stones approached Roy to replace Brian Jones and he turned them down. A story you used to hear a lot. I’ve always followed the DC area guys. I’m a huge Gatton fan, I love Nils Lofgren, Tom Principato, AND yes, Roy was an influence. However, over the years, it’s become clear that Roy told a lot of stories. I’ve never believed that the Stones approached him. Look at what he looked like? 1969 Rolling Stones were never having a combover, leisure suit, with a beard and a cap replacing Brian Jones. Regardless how good he was. Look who they hired? A thin, blond, teenaged, blues guitar, virtuoso, “Rock Star”. Anyway, it doesn’t change the impact Roy Buchanan’s fiery playing had on me. These are two backing tracks that remind me of Roy’s kinds of things. I also did it on my telecaster. But, not for today. Is it Spring yet? “Love Hurts” penned by Boudleaux Bryant ( without his wife Felice) for The Everly Brothers, who recorded it in 1960, but were restricted from releasing it as a single due to their dispute with their record company, manager and publisher Acuff-Rose. Well, they DID leave Cadence records for Warners. So, who knows? Probably totally correct. Most know this one from Nazareth’s huge hit. Although, Roy Orbison did a version among others. And, Don and Phil got it on a later album. I have always loved Keith and Norah Jones’ performance of this from the Gram Parsons tribute with one of my favorites, James Burton on guitar. But, I was approached by a local band recently and wasn’t in love with their playlist. Too many Fleetwood Mac Stevie Nicks tunes AND the ubiquitous Black Velvet, which I can’t bring myself to play. I’d be looking for a female led band to be more adventurous. Anyway, they sent me this backing track. I’m not sure if it’s their lead singer or something they found. But, it’s in A. Most of the versions I’ve heard aren’t in A. Keith and Norah did it in G. So, I played it. A few times with different guitars just for the hell of it. Mostly cause I love the song. I just kept playing along, left the camera on and the mistakes? They’re what they are. Funny, last Tuesday we were at Wellstrung Guitars and I got to play some of the guitars that I’ve only dreamed about. Playing my own less stellar guitars was a wake up. Mine play damned good. Do they stand up to REAL legit ‘59 and ‘60 ‘Bursts? Or, a ‘59 Strat? Obviously, it’s working tools vs iconic treasures. I’m ok that I’ll never have things like that. But, as a player? Mine are mine. Apparently, I’m not finding anybody who shares my concept of a roots, blues based, classic r&b /Motown, rockabilly, jump blues club band, doing the greatest music and most beloved songs of the post-war eras. So, I’m biting the bullet and exposing my playing to the local “Blues Scene”. So, anybody that’s ever checked out my videos on here knows I play a lot of Blues. Truthfully MOST of what I play has Blues at its core. But, I’ve been there before. In Florida I was part of a Blues band that did a ton of local gigs. Better that than hiding out at home. So, I’m still hunting a band. Found a great drummer. I’m not sure he’s up for learning a night’s worth of material. But, I still play. It’s Tuesday. So, half of these clips are with my Fender Telecaster. I didn’t think about that when I played this one over the weekend. It’s a version of Cathy’s Clown by the late Don Everly and recorded by he and his fabulous brother Phil in one take with both of them sharing one vocal mic. It was their last number one hit, and the first single they recorded for Warner Brothers in 1960. Previously they were on Cadence Records where they had all of their previous major hits. Bad blood and sour grapes on their management, Cadence’s Archie Bleyer, and Acuff-Rose’s publishing’s parts meant they couldn’t record songs written by Boudleaux and Felice Bryant, who’d written most of their Cadence hits. So, Don wrote this one himself. Early American rock gave us so many greats. These guys, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran , Elvis? Too many. Hard to believe that in just a few years, these guys would be eclipsed by Brits feeding us back what they adopted in ways that would change everything. Still. I love the old stuff. I first heard “Going Down” by Don Nix, back around ‘71 or ‘72 by Savoy Brown on the “Street Corner Talking “ tour. First album and tour after Dave and the rest quit to form Foghst. I found a slightly used copy of Freddie King’s album, with his version of it for a buck fifty, at the Music Box on Union Turnpike in Queens. And, we started playing “Going Down” in our band, “Lightning”. THEN, Jeff Beck’s ( RIP) second Jeff Beck Group MK II did it on that second album. The one with the orange on it. Love this one. It’s a great noodle to stretch out a little. “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess” by George Gershwin is actually “Blues”. Part of what is technically an opera, Gershwin dug into what we “hear” as Blues for this stylized slice of Southern African American life. To me? Being exposed to “Blues” is the consistent thread that runs through pretty much everything I play on the guitar. And, has been since 1968. Tuesday….if we were in The UK? It would be “Boxing Day”. I think Canada too. Don’t know about Australia and New Zealand. But, where I am? Just Tuesday after Christmas. AND, you all know what that means? An old friend whom I’d played with back in 1973, who was and I’d imagine still is a wonderful bass player, asked me to do a thing on “Devil’s Gun. A song by Scots singer Frankie Miller, from his second album. 1974’s Frankie Miller’s High Life. Interesting in that while not a particularly big seller, it WAS produced by Alan Toussaint. Miller did some killer stuff, running from funky R&B type things to things like this. Which, I always equate with Paul Rodgers Free and Bad Company stuff. He was always a great singer. He even was planning a band with Joe Walsh until stricken with a brain aneurism. Which pretty much ended his singing career after a long time in a coma. For today’s offering, I put on my clean, straight from the wash Macaris t-shirt that I bought in London in 2019, before they moved off of Charing Cross to the outskirts of London. Obviously, a London guitar fixture since ‘58, they are famous for Colorsound and Solasound Tone Benders and distortion pedals. Which, I HAVE used. I enjoyed my visit there. I’ve always loved “Hard Times” by Paul Mitchell and David “Fathead” Newman, who released the first version in 1959. Also beautifully played by The Jazz Crusaders. A cold but very bright sunny Saturday…AND the house was empty! You KNOW what that means. “Straturday”. Or, “Freakin Straturday” in Tarzana…you know? I don’t get the whole “Tele-Tuesday”/“Straturday”/“Fender/Flametop” Friday thing. I mean, it is sort of fun…but, it’s getting boring. I still play regardless of the day of the week and whatever they call it on Instagram. So, I was on my way back from the gym and heard Gary Moore’s version of “The Messiah Will Come Again”. His take is a tad slower and heavier than Roy Buchanan’s. Which is great too and the sentiment is nice. And I was thinking to myself, and actually said to nobody ( excepting me cause I was the only one in the car) yeah, if there ever was a Messiah, with what’s going on all over over the place, in Israel/Palestine and Ukraine, let alone how f.cked up things are around here…he’d have shown up already to square things away. Yeah I know they don’t believe the Messiah has come yet in Israel or the Islamic counties…( let alone coming again )and, the religious right in this country probably embarrassed the guy enough that he’s not coming back…ever. But, anyway…you think these things in the car, by yourself. A different side of “The Blues”. When I was coming up, I’d read interviews in magazines like Down Beat where these heavy duty Jazz guys would talk about “Blues”…look, mostly I was looking at pictures of the guitars!! I had no clue. Then, after Feb 1964 it all really started. But, Summertime” from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin…WAS a truly astounding attempt at a Classical approach to “Blues”. Actually, it’s technically an aria. Because, Porgy And Bess was created as an opera! Playing it takes me someplace else. By 1967 I was very exposed a different take on “The Blues”. Mike Bloomfield, Butterfield, those fabulous British guys…Hendrix! Not like this! But, over the years I’ve come to appreciate these tentative visits into a different type of Blues guitar. Rainy, nasty, cold Sunday Upstate NY afternoon. And…was playing-in a new set of Ernie Ball’s and a fresh battery. I just got my pink Strat-thing back from Parkway Music in Clifton Park NY. The thing got screwed together in ‘84. The EMG rig was soldered in at Rudy’s that same year. So, it’s understandable that the wiring got a little brittle. Close to 40 years? Anyway, Parkway straightened out some iffy stuff and didn’t hit me over the head. Fine tuned the intonation and cleaned it nicely. Anyway, this was the first plug-in and I played what I’d set up in rotation. As it came. Pedal board into Fender Blues Junior. Quiet as the day it was made. Last Tuesday night we got to see the incredible Pat Metheny at the Troy Music Hall. This was a solo performance in an acoustically superior small small venue theater. I’ve alway loved Pat Metheny. But, he’s so out of my league I’d never try to sound like him. Yet, I had to attempt one of his tunes…even if an unfortunate amount of “Phil” is there. It’s posted in reverse. I sat down on “Tele-Tuesday”….without a Tele. Mostly to make sure I knew “This Old Heart Of Mine” as recorded by The Isley Brothers. Written by Motown’s famed Holland, Dozier, Holland along with Sylvia Moy, this was the only major hit the Isleys charted while on Motown’s Tamla label. It was originally supposed to go to The Supremes, who eventually did it . As did Tammy Terrell. I like playing it and the chords have been used (uncredited) as backing tracks. This was intensional. I want to do a Motown medley as part of a club set. I’ve got, Tears of a Clown, My Girl, I was made To Love Her…a few others. I have to convince. It’s a different thing with a three piece. Then, while I was playing, I did a little throw a way blues…and hit a few pedals for a trip back to the seventies.
