Just like that, a month gone & the tour pulling into The Station. We made record time yesterday … a mind boggling 3h47m show on a day without a hotel because we strategized that driving after the show to NYC was the only guarantee not to be undone by Key Bridge disaster traffic. And we were wise, though crispy to have done it. We made record time … 3 hours door to door … caught in the draft of 2 Mustangs going 100 on the NJTP, lol. It says a lot about THESE musicians. Not one of the fans would have minded us playing a shorter show to get on the road sooner … but the band were not thinking about anything that happens later … they were in the flow … the moment, and that moment lasted 3h47m. The band played LONGER than the time it took to drive DC > NY. It really has been special … the camaraderie, the shenanigans, most of all your love & support … packed houses … and The Music. Chuck joined the Allman Brothers at age 20, after working with Gregg Allman on his first solo album Laid Back. He played the unforgettable piano solo during "Jessica" on 1973's Brothers and Sisters album. He formed the band Sea Level in 1976. He auditioned for the piano chair alongside Ian Stewart in The Rolling Stones in 1981, and began touring in 1982. He is the music director for the Stones these days. Even Keith Richards says, "Without Chuck there wouldn't be anymore Stones." He was the musical director behind the 1992 Grammy Award winning "Unplugged" album by Eric Clapton. In 2001 he joined Warren Haynes, Matt Abts and Dave Schools in the new school of Gov't Mule. He has toured and recorded with George Harrison, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Black Crowes, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and David Gilmour... And this is just a small sample of his body of work. #SouthernLegend. Happy 72nd birthday to legendary musician, singer, composer, author, producer and music director Chuck Leavell. Born April 28, 1952 in Birmingham, AL. His older sister took him to see Ray Charles when he was 13, and his life's path was set. He started doing session work in Muscle Shoals as a teenager in the late 60's. He relocated to Macon in 1970, where he began working at Capricorn Studios and playing with Dr. John. During this time he caught the attention of Gregg Allman, who asked Chuck to play on his solo album Laid Back. According to Leavell, "Johnny Sandlin was producing and asked me in for a session on Gregg's record. Then about 10 days or so into the sessions, these jams started going down. Dickey, Berry Oakley, Jaimoe and Butch showed up after hours and we just started playing. Sometimes we might do a blues tune or maybe an Allman's song, but it was really free and loose. After a couple of weeks, I get a call from Phil Walden to come to his office." When he got there, all 5 Brothers were waiting for him. Phil said, "Well, the band says they really like what is happening musically, and want to know if you'd be interested in joining the band." Chuck adds, "I was barely 20 years old at the time, it was quite a shock. It was an amazing time." Chuck played on Brothers and Sisters (1973), Highway Call (1974), Win, Lose Or Draw (1975) and Wipe The Windows, Check The Oil...Dollar Gas (1976). Chuck and Dickey played together in BHLT in the early 80's, and several ABB reunion shows in 1986. Chuck went on to play with The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Gov't Mule, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Charlie Daniels Band and David Gilmour to name a few. An elegant proscenium theater is Appell Center for The Arts in York, PA where LDB ran its heady spectrum of dynamic arrangements in yet another 3+ hour show (the 7th in a row) on Friday night. So much of the repertoire has found footing and the band is showcasing that dexterity with breakouts, delish sandwiches and changing arrangements.
