On April 15th, 1977, Lt Charles Hunt of Engine 166 (photo 1) perished while fighting a fire on a derelict wooden bridge in Staten Island. The fire was largely extinguished when he went to check on smoldering pockets and the wood collapsed beneath his weight. He fell nearly 15 feet into the cold waters of the Fresh Kills. Immediate rescue attempts failed, and he sank into the dark waters. At the time, the FDNY did not have rescue divers. It would take almost 4 hours before he was located and removed from the water. The incident highlights the danger of falling into water while wearing fire clothing, be it open water like Lt. Hunt, or an inground swimming pool as has happened to others. The immediate reaction is often panic. Firefighters should know that if they fall into the water while wearing their SCBA, it will continue to operate normally, allowing them to survive until rescued, or until they can save themselves. That knowledge can prevent panic if one should suddenly find oneself thrown into the water. Just keep breathing normally and swim or float to the surface. Bunker gear has some air trapped in the material and will not immediately drag you under water. Drop heavy tools of course, but don't panic. All firefighters operating near water should have a PFD (life-jacket) on over their fire clothing if practical. Serious fire that requires SCBA use often precludes the wearing of such gear. In the case of a fall that renders the member unconscious, immediate rescue is essential. Water rescue swimmers should be dressed and standing by, as in photo 2, before firefighters place themselves in positions that could result in them entering the water. A sudden explosion or fire extension can send members moving away suddenly. They can bump other members who were safe from the fire, but near the water. Collapse of bridges or piers is possible. SCUBA divers should also be called as soon as operations on the waterfront are planned. RIP Lt. Hunt #fdny #squad1 #squad1fdny #fdnysoc #waterrescue #technicalrescue #pierfire #hazmat #firefighterfatality #firefighterrescue #chiefnormanfdny

Don't let yourself down. Then Captain Donald Hayde of Squad Co.1 prepares to rappel down a 15-story elevator shaft at a power plant as part of the Special Operations Commands high angle training. At left is Rescue 1 Firefighter and high angle instructor, Stanley Sussina. As a Battalion Chief, Don spent 20 years in the Rescue Battalion, retiring with over 40 years in the FDNY. He is a true friend and a gentleman who has trained thousands of firefighters across the nation. Stan is a true high angle legend. During a wind-driven fire at the jazz legend, Lionel Hampton's apartment, two women were trapped in the adjoining apartment with a blowtorch of flame blowing down the interior hallway preventing interior hoselines from reaching them. Stan was lowered from the 29th floor to the trapped women's location and remained there with them, evaluating conditions and calming them for an hour until the fire was finally controlled and the women were able to be brought down the interior stair. It is only through constant training in realistic conditions that you will be able to perform at the high levels needed at potentially deadly situations. Don't let yourself down, .......unless that is your intent, like Chief Hayde is literally doing here. #fdny #rescue1 #res1cue #fire #rescue1fdny #squad1 #squad1fdny #fdnysoc #technicalrescue #firerescue #highanglerescue #firefighter #firefighters #firefighting #roperescue #roperescuetraining #roperescuetechnician #chiefnormanfdny

Fires in multiple dwellings expose all the other occupants of the building to the stupidity of a few. That is what makes these fires so deadly. This situation was so bad in the late 1800s that NY State passed the 1901 Tenement House Act, mandating fire safety improvements, including fireproofing of the apartment doors and hallways. Unfortunately, some people never seem to get the message. Firefighters responding to a working fire with people trapped discovered the potentially deadly window shown in photos 1 and 2, which connected from the fire apartment directly into the wooden stairwell. Thankfully, the blaze was controlled before fire reached this room, which would have cut off the stairs as a means of escape for everyone on floors above the fire. Photo 3 shows a door from an old tenement fitted with wire-glass in the door and transom over the door. Wired-glass has a fire containment rating from 45 minutes to 3 hours depending on its thickness. It does not fail as easily as regular glass. Transoms were required to be sealed shut when the 1901 law took effect, but many times today's newer generation of occupants have no clue about the importance of such safety measures, and unseal them in their "trendy" restoration projects in these old buildings. Firefighters have known the answers to the life safety challenges of residential fires for over 120 years. The problem is ignorant occupants and lax enforcement. If you come across obvious violations such as this, take action to correct it. Get the code enforcement people involved, either in-house or an outside agency such as the building department. You will be protecting the lives of every tenant and firefighter in the building better than if you had a charged hoseline. After the Life Saving Rope rescues last week, I received a few comments and questions that may be worth sharing. One of the recent rope rescues involved multiple victims. That can create a serious threat to the rescuer. People trapped by fire are terrified. They will do terrifying things. When 2 people are trapped in different windows, rescuers will have to make a hard choice about which to rescue first. Try to get the most endangered first. If 2 people are trapped in the same window, they may be fighting each other to get on the rope first. Rescuers can only take 1 person at a time. Nobody wants to be left in the room with fire waiting for another rescuer they can't yet see. When I was a Ff. in E-290, we went to a box where Ff. Joe Dirks of L-103 faced exactly that situation. Joe was being lowered by Gene DiMarco, from the roof of a 3-story building When he got to the top floor window, he found 2 women needing rescue. He took the closest woman to him and told the other that somebody else would be down in a few seconds. As Gene started lowering Joe, the 2nd woman took things into her own hands. She jumped out the window onto the rope, sliding down on top of Joe and the first victim. The sudden shock load on the rope dragged Gene perilously close to the edge of the roof that had no parapet. All 4 people were about to be plunged to the yard. Russ Bengtson of L-103 jumped on Gene, and coupled with the 2nd woman falling off (she lived), prevented tragedy. To my knowledge, we never dropped a victim. In that case, the lack of a substantial object to tie off to could have been fatal. Use a tool or two buried into the roof deck as a last-ditch brace if no other option exists. Tie off to the aerial or around a bulkhead (photo 2), if possible. In photo 3 Squad Co. 1 members review the rope layout used in the rescue in photo 1. Note the loop in the rope used to attach the Life Belt to allow the roof Ff. to control the descent. The 150-ft. life rope barely reached the ground after tying off around the bulkhead and lowering the 4 stories to the ground. Great work by all! #fdny #squad1 #ladder103 #roperescue #firerescue #fdnysoc #chiefnormanfdny

Today is the 31st anniversary of the first attack on the World Trade Center by radical Islamists, which killed 6 people and injured over 5,000, mostly with smoke inhalation. That attack was carried out with an ammonium nitrate-fuel oil bomb placed in a van and driven into the underground parking garage. The blast pulverized the concrete floor slabs for several floors of the garage (photo 2) in an attempt to cause collapse of the North Tower, but the steel columns that supported the tower were undisturbed. Initial units responded to what they perceived was a transformer explosion, unaware of the fact that it was a terrorist bombing. They proceeded with normal firefighting and rescue operations. In photo 2 (taken the next day) Ffs peer over the edge of the crater at the location where Ff. Kevin Shea of Rescue Co. 1 slid off the edge of a collapsing parking ramp and plunged nearly 40 feet into the blazing inferno below. Miraculously, Kevin survived and was able to give a Mayday. He was unable to move and, at first, thought he was impaled on a piece of steel rebar, several of which poked up on both sides of him. The first rescuer to reach Kevin was Lt. John Fox of Squad Co. 1, who rappelled over this edge, down into an inferno of hundreds of burning cars, arcing electric cable, and falling concrete. Other rescuers made their way down the remains of shattered staircases. Kevin was severely injured, but would make a full recovery, and still teaches at venues like the FDIC to this day. He is very well known for his heroic roof rope rescue in 1991. Lt. Fox was awarded the James Gordon Bennett Medal (the FDNY's highest award for valor) for his actions. John Fox was a genuine tough guy: a decorated Vietnam era U.S. Marine tunnel rat, and longtime Brooklyn Ff. When I responded to the second WTC attack on 9/11, one of the first people I met when I boarded a bus leaving the 15th Division mustering site was John Fox. I immediately felt better knowing we would be going into battle together. Sadly, John passed away in 2017, at just 65 years old. Two highly specialized units within the FDNY are the Rebreather Units. These rigs are staffed by members of the Special Operations Command to provide extended duration breathing apparatus at incidents where the normal 45-minute, or even 60-minute cylinders, will not allow firefighters enough air to complete their assigned tasks and return to fresh air. Under-river tunnels are prime locations for such masks, as are incidents aboard ships, or even sub-cellars of large buildings. The East River tunnels are 1-1/2 miles long from portal to portal, walking that distance in poor visibility requires well over an hour. In 2004, the FDNY purchased Draeger BG-4, 4-hour rebreather units (photo 2) that are very different from the SCBA worn for daily tasks. They use a canister of absorbent powder (top left, marked 11-23-04) to scrub CO2 from air the wearer exhales, the unit then recirculates this "used air" back to the wearer, adding small quantities of oxygen into the stream (small green bottle). This process however adds heat to the recirculated air which would make it uncomfortable to breathe. To solve this issue, a block of ice must be placed into the top right container, providing cool moist air to the wearer. In photo 3, then Squad 1 Ff. Boletti wears the BG-4 at a shipboard drill. It has a larger profile than a standard SCBA, and is not intended to replace the Scott 4.5 masks for normal fire duty. The preparation of the masks immediately prior to each use, inserting the blocks of ice, checking function etc., means they are reserved for long term events where their extended duration will offset the setup time involved in getting them into operation. The units are very different from the standard SCBA, so only specially trained members of the Special Operations Command and select ladder companies are permitted to use them at operations. They have proven their worth at a variety of incidents, and I.C.'s may special call units whenever they foresee the need. At tunnels and similar situations, a rebreather task force should be staged at each end of the tunnel. #fdny #fdnysoc #tunnelfires #squad1 #rebreathers #shipfire #firefighting #rescue #chiefnormanfdny

The photo is of one of my favorite units in the FDNY, Squad Co. 1. It is posted in memory of a great fire officer, Lt. Anthony "Sonny" Cataldo. I first met Sonny in 1989, when I was a new Lt. in Rescue Co. 2. Sonny was a Lt. in Squad 1 and we would operate side-by-side at many fires. His nickname could also be spelled as "Sunny", since that was his disposition. He always had a broad smile whenever he met you. When we met, he had over 27 years on the job and he welcomed me with open arms. Squad 1 has a long, storied history. The unit first began in 1955 as a manpower squad at the quarters of E-59 in Harlem. In 1972 it moved to the Bronx and shared quarters with Engine 45 and Ladder 58. It was disbanded along with numerous other FDNY units in 1976 amid a budget shortfall. A very powerful local politician in the Park Slope neighborhood, Tom Cuite, approached the FDNY about getting additional money to re-open his local firehouse, Engine 269. The FDNY needed additional capabilities in more than just Park Slope, so they came to an agreement to re-open the firehouse, but with a new unit, Squad 1, which would act as the first due engine in 269's old neighborhood, and also respond to a much larger segment of Brooklyn on working fires (10-75's). The unit re-opened in 1977, and Captain Ray Downey was selected as the new Company Commander and Lt. Anthony Cataldo would be one of his 3 Lieutenants. Sonny would remain in Sq-1 until his retirement in 1995. Squad 1 responded on the 10-75 signal along with Rescue 2, both units often arriving at the same time as the first alarm units SCBA's were depleted. Many times, Squad would take over the hoseline from a spent engine company, while Rescue 2 would relieve the Ladder Company and we would move in together to complete extinguishment, with R-2 doing the opening up and searching while the Squad did the hose work. It was a great combination and Sonny and his men were just a joy to work with. Truly great firefighters. In 1994, I was promoted to Captain and covered the relief group in Squad 1 and the 5 Rescues for a great year. RIP Sonny Photo unknown #fdny #squad1 #squad1fdny #firetrucks #firefighters #chiefnormanfdny

Skills Training A member of Squad Co. 1 tests the unit's exothermic cutting torch as part of weekly maintenance. The "burning bar", or "thermal lance" as it is known, is an excellent tool for heavy steel cutting that uses oxygen and special hollow rods filled with thin alloy materials to produce a jet of flame at 5,000 to 6,000 degrees F. The 3/8" diameter rod is rapidly consumed in the process, but it can cut through thick steel that gives oxy-acetylene or oxy-MAPP torches difficulty unless they are equipped with the largest tips. That means every 30-40 seconds, a new 36" long rod must be inserted into the handle. Larger diameter rods, up to 10 feet long, are often used in industrial demolition operations such as shipbreaking and bridge demolition, and were in fact needed at the World Trade Center collapse in the fall of 2001. Exothermic torch operations can be sped up by keeping a small handheld propane torch burning near the operation, which allows a newly inserted rod to be ignited more readily than with the unit's included battery igniter. A second firefighter, holding the small torch and the spare rods can speed up the process greatly. A third individual, acting as a spotter and fireguard, is also helpful. The unit can cut through steel, such as railroad tracks, faster than other torches or saws, especially in the hands of a skilled operator. That is part of the importance of weekly practice, to maintain proficiency. #fdny #squad1 #squad1fdny #fdnysoc #steelcutting

What a first day @pro_shoot_firearms shooting the @precisionrifleseries_uk competition , from heavy rain, reduced visibility and strong winds with gusts up to 25mph. Really tested me and I didn’t shoot as well as I would like to have but I still got a big smile on my face. Looking forward to tomorrow. #squad1

Much more wholesome this time... Introducing the OC parent to Aoi, Momoka! (She/her) Momoka and Nanao were academy friends and unofficial sweethearts that reconnected several hundred years later. Momoka was adoring and sweet, though not so sickly sweet that it came off as forceful. She tried to do what was best for everyone while still standing her ground for her own self preservation. And some time after reuniting, Nanao fell in love with her all over again. They got married and later had their son Aoi. They were a happy family, though happy things can't last forever... when Aoi was in the Shinō Academy, Momoka was killed by a Hollow. In Nanao's initial grieving period, Shunsui often kept the teen Aoi company. He rubbed off on the boy a lot. In the present timeline (which is like, 500 years post canon), she's at the recovery stage where she doesn't think of her all the time or when looking at Aoi, but there's still the occasional night where she cries herself to sleep over her. She's getting there in the path of recovering from the grief of losing Shunsui, but she still can't help but think of her uncle every time she looks at her son... #bleach #bleachoc #oc #ocxcanon #nanaoxoc #bleachanime #anime #nanaoise #nextgen #nextgenoc #bleachnextgen #shunsuikyoraku #squad8 #squad1
