The Bellefontaine United Methodist Church is a Greek Revival style church that was built circa 1854-1855 in what is now Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri. The origins of the Bellefontaine Methodist Church date back to 1805 when the Coldwater Circuit was organized. For many years people met in houses around the area before the congregation grew large enough to warrant constructing a church building. In 1853 James Bissell, who had been teaching a Methodist Sunday School on Wilson Larimore's property, donated 8 acres of land for a church and cemetery. In 1854 construction began on a new church with both members of the congregation and their slaves working on the building. They finished a beautiful Greek Revival style church the following year. The church was made on site with materials from the area. They used clay from the site to make handmade bricks and in turn built the church. It has doric style pilasters that frame the facade of the building and a dentiled pediment. The windows are large 16 over 16 sash windows with limestone lintels. The interior of the church used to include a slave gallery which was built for the large population of slaves in the area. For many years this church remained unchanged until 1928. In that year the second addition to the church was made part of which was the tower. Later additions were the school, the new church, and the atrium in front. The church served the community for many years. Eventually within the past 10 years the church began sharing its space with different churches as its own congregation shrank. The Bellefontaine Methodist Church continued on but in the end the inevitable happened. In the summer of 2022 the church closed due to its small and ever shrinking congregation. The old church is still standing on its hill overlooking Bellefontaine Road below even though its congregation is gone.

The Hanley House is a Greek Revival style house that was built circa 1855 in what would be Clayton, Missouri. Martin F. Hanley was a farmer and blacksmith from West Virginia who arrived in the St. Louis area in 1837. Two years later he married Cyrene Clemens Walton. They had 11 children together 10 of whom survived to adulthood. Later in 1846 he purchased 112 acres of farmland in the country. He finally had his house built in 1855 which was set upon the highest point on his property underneath a large black oak that used to stand near the house. The house is a 2 1/2 story central hall house designed in the Greek Revival style. It is made of soft brick with a full limestone basement. One outbuilding remains standing: a brick summer kitchen. The front of the house has a two story porch crowned with a pediment and across the rear of the house is a two story porch. The Hanley family was a slaveholding family and their views on this matter made them strong southern sympathizers. Their house is said to have been a hotbed of activity for the Confederate cause in the area which they openly advocated. After the war they continued to farm their property and Martin continued to manufacture and repair farm implements. In 1877 Martin gave land along with Ralph Clayton to St. Louis County to serve as its new seat after the Great Divorce of 1876. This was named Clayton because Ralph gave more land. Martin died in 1879 and in 1894 Cyrene also passed leaving the property to her daughter Nancy Hanley who never married. Nancy's nieces eventually moved in to help care for her late in her life and at her death in 1938 she willed the house to her niece Barbara Yore. Barbara sold the house and its remaining acre of land to the city of Clayton in 1968. From 1968-1971 under the supervision of Charles van Ravenswaay the house and grounds were restored to their 19th century appearance. From then on it has been a house museum run by a group of volunteers. It was also made a county landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The Sutter-Meyer House is a vernacular, Missouri German style house that was built circa 1873 in what is now University City, Missouri. John Sutter arrived with his family to the United States in 1831. They made their way to the St. Louis area and in 1839 John married Ursula Anselm. John bought land on the edges of what would become St. Louis' current borders. He engaged in dairy farmer and was in partnership with Lucien Cabanne. In 1869 John died 13 years after his first wife. His estate was settled in 1871 and each child and his widow received 8.33 acres of land. William Sutter was one of his two children who had reached his majority. In 1869 before William recieved his land from the settlement he married Julia Broking. They settled on their new average in the county and mortgaged it in 1873. It is believed that they built this small farmhouse with the borrowed money. The house they built is in a style found commonly in German communities around the St. Louis called Missouri German. It was built with brick and has a front porch along the front of the building off the back is a small ell which is from the 19th century. The front of the building is styled Victorian while the interior for the house is styled in the Greek Revival style. Unfortunately the Sutter family did not stay for long in their new home. Roman Meyer purchased the house from the Sutter family in 1875. He and his family ran the property as a truck farm growing vegetables for themselves and for sale at market. As a result of the splitting up of John's estate the area was named Sutter after him and his family. Roman owned the house until 1913 and his wife owned it until 1936. Their son Edward inherited it then and continued living there until his death in 1969. During that time the Meyers continued to farm and garden the land they owned. It was gradually subdivided to build new houses and neighborhoods. In 1982 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and made a University City Landmark in 1986. The house is one of the oldest remaining in the city with only one other on Olive Boulevard known to be around the same age. Since about 2006 it has also been a house museum.

The Chouteau Mansion was a Missouri French style house that was built circa 1807 in Bridgeton, Missouri. In 1807 construction began on this house by Francois Chouteau and his foreman Palmer. They had already cut down white oak trees earlier in the year and used the hewn logs to construct a large country house. The logs were set horizontally as opposed to the typical French vertical log style for the area. Times were changing though as American influences crept into the area. Americans affected everything from the demographics of the area to the architecture of homes built even by the French themselves. Even though the house had horizontal log walls and double hung 12 over 12 sash windows, it was otherwise typically French. It had a large galerie which surrounded the core structure, dormers, a double-pitched roof, and a massive stone chimney and foundation. The Chouteau family would own this country estate, off of what is now Gist Road, until about 1846 when they sold the property to Dr. Sauveur Francois Bonfils. His brother Dr. Julius Bonfils acquired it in 1855 after his brother's death. Under the Bonfils ownership the area around the house became known as Bonfils ("good son" in English). They let the property deteriorate over time though and pictured is the state of the house in 1871 by Rudolph Goebel, a well known photographer based in St. Charles Missouri. The house appears to have survived until sometime into the 1880s as a newspaper account in the St. Louis Republican from 1877 has a report on it still standing. During the early 1900s Goebel republished his photos in postcard format which were sold to the public. This is one of those postcards which depicted places he had photographed years or decades before. This was a relic of the past though by the time this postcard was made. It was a simple reminder of the French past of the area and its connection with the Chouteau family. This will be the beginning of a series of archive posts on postcards that I own myself so stay tuned until next week for more.

The Charles Rannells House, also known as "Woodside", is a Greek Revival I-House with Gothic influence that was built circa 1848 in Maplewood, Missouri. Charles Rannells was born in Kentucky and became a lawyer. He moved to St. Louis soon after marrying Mary Warder in Springfield, Ohio in 1842. After moving back to St. Louis, he was admitted to the bar for the second time there. By 1848 Charles had done well enough to start purchasing land in today's Maplewood, Missouri. By 1850 he had started living on that land in his new house. The house that he had constructed was built with timber framing. It has logs hewn in half as joists in the basement of the house. It was originally built on a stone foundation and covered in wood siding. The dormer windows are suggestive of the Gothic Revival style. Originally the house had a more Greek Revival style entrance but it along with much of the house has been senselessly modernized. The house provided a comfortable home for Charles' family on their farm. In 1850 he was elected to the state Senate and reelected in 1854 as a Know-Nothing Party member. By the end of the Civil War Charles had become an alcoholic. His debts had also been mounting causing problems. He briefly went to an asylum in Pennsylvania to become sober but it didn't work. Until his death in 1877 he had been under guardianship due to his alcoholism and inability to manage his financial affairs. Much of the family's estate had been sold but they retained many acres in Maplewood. Mary lived in the house until her death in 1896 after which her son Edward, a county judge (not legal, political), inherited the house. He platted the rest of the farm and reduced the size of the lot to close to what it is today. After 1922 the last of the Rannells left and the house was sold being both a private residence and a nursing home. By the early 1990s the house was in terrible shape. In 2004 though the city and a group of concerned citizens banded together to save the house. A group was formed to restore the house but folded by 2006. It took another decade for much to happen but in 2016 the city sold it to two people who renovated it giving its current appearance.
