It all started with a chair ! True story, after I accepted the project I was told « by the way Julia, we already bought the chairs for the project ». 😲 Thankfully, what is usually one of my worst nightmares, this time turned out to be 100 vintage iconic Santo chairs from @dietiker_switzerland in my favorite midnight blue colour! 😅 All I had to do was design an entire café around a chair but I feel everything worked out well at the end. We were kindly asked to work with the tl’s corporate colour scheme: blue and white. We used 4 shades of white (that’s still white right? 😅 ) to add depth to the mural and after much debate we were given permission to add a small amount of terracotta! We had to draw thousands and thousands of small (and even smaller!) tiles to get the desired effect. The plan was then carefully followed by the most patient tilers in Lausanne who laid them one by one by hand 😅 to complete this huge artwork. Researching materials for our project is one of the most important parts of our work and really what makes our projects unique. For the custom made furniture, we looked at metal mesh used on the outside of buildings. We wanted to give a light transparency to otherwise massive structural elements. For instants, however light it may appear, in order to develop the 22 meter long and 4m high shelving wall in the back of the bar we worked together with a structural engineer to make sure it would stand. The entire structure is made of reinforced stainless steel and free from the walls and ceiling. Adding a second skin in brass metal mesh reinforced this unique tension between the transparency and mass. The reception counter and DJ booth followed the same logic in a smaller scale. Today is a big day for us! We’re finally starting the renovation work on this beauty 🤩 the excitement is real! Originally built in 1882 as a music kiosque at the Parc des Bastions in Geneva, the @caferestaurantdesbastions has been through many transformations over the years and, let’s just say, some were better done than others… 🤭 Our project consists in bringing back the original allure of this iconic building all the while creating a grand restaurant, bar and events venue. Very ambitious, but I love a good chalenge!
