This week we saw a small puppy that was brought in by a young boy. He said the puppy was ill and not eating well. He said he had walked all the way from Botha's hill with the puppy. We took the boy into our consult room immediately and Cyp came in to talk to him in Zulu as he didnt understand our vet. We took a blood smear and were happy to confirm that we saw no biliary as the child had said there were lots of ticks on the puppy, that he had named Kevin. Our vet provided the puppy with Free deworming, tick and flea medication, Rabies vaccination as well as treatment for Ehrlichia as the puppy was anaemic. We also injected the puppy with iron supplement and multivitamin. Our vets will do everything they can to assist and give aid where they can. Kevin the puppy was also given some Hills food and we asked the boy to come back in in a week for a check up, to which he agreed. Imagine our horror when we heard that this little boy was going up and down the street trying to sell the puppy. We don't know what happened to the puppy but we know someone called Michael called us for information and that his mom took the pup for a Parvo test. If anyone has any information for us we would really appreciate it. Kingsley came in for his annual vaccinations. He lives on a horse yard with his mum and loves nothing better than being out in the stables and exploring nooks and crannies. Kingsley is fully vaccinated for cat flu and enteritis, rabies AND Leukaemia which is great as he meets all kinds of cats that live on the farm. When he came in his mum asked us to check his ears as he seemed quite irritated with his ears. Ear infections in cats are rare and usually linked to allergies and he has never shown any signs of allergic reactions. Imagine our horror when we looked down the Otoscope and saw something wriggling around in his ear. We whisked him to the procedures room and took a closer look. Using some specialised forceps we managed to grab the critter. When we looked in his other ear we were even more aghast as we found two big bloated ticks in the ear. Once removed Mr Kingsley felt so much better. Hes been given instructions to remind his mum that he needs Bravecto every three months. Otobius megnini, also known as the spinose ear tick, is a soft-bodied tick that is only parasitic in the larval and nymphal stages. As its common name suggests, the spinose ear tick's parasitic forms are usually found within the ears of the definitive host. Hunter's Knee Injury Dear sweet Hunter's least favourite place is coming to the vet. He adores our vet, Kath and staff but he is very scared of everything V . E . T related. Silly Hunter loves charging about the garden chasing those pesky intruders (feathered and furry) we have in Hillcrest. But unfortunately he went a little too crazy recently and he came a cropper and ruptured his cruciate ligament. Because of Hunter's fear of being at the vet we decided to try conservative treatment. He began physiotherapy with Paige from Equine Librium. Part of his recovery was to start wearing a support brace for his knee. Yesterday he had a sedation and we began the process of building his custom made brace. Two very special women ran the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon yesterday. Megan and Kathryn ran to raise money for the "Friends of Naughty" Charity. They managed to raise an amazing R 14800. Megan set up the charity after the sudden and traumatic loss of her, and most of Hillcrest's, beloved cat, Naughty. Naughty was a frequent visitor at Cafe Mayfair and several other local businesses. He spread love and cuddles where ever he went. The charity supports families and their pets where money is tight and they need a little financial assistance with their veterinary bill. They have already donated towards the veterinary care of a dear little kitty that is the only company of an Elderly Lady in Hillcrest. This is gorgeous Loki, a massive Norwegian Forest Cat that has immigrated here from Spain recently. Loki came waltzing in on her harness, sat down on command and also gives high fives and fist bumps. 👊 What a cool cat! Thanks for coming in to meet us Loki 🐱🧡 Norwegian Forest Cat Independent but affectionate, the Norwegian forest cat is not going to sleep on your lap all night, though they may hop up for a brief cuddle now and then. That isn’t to say the Norwegian forest cat has a standoffish personality - far from it. Norwegian forest cats are very attached to their humans and want to be involved in all aspects of family life. They just would rather be nearby rather than right on you. Norwegian forest cats are curious, playful, and even-tempered, making them great companions for families with children. Oh Larry! What a silly boy. Larry was rushed in to see us as his mom thought he had a blockage. He is known to eat stones so we took him straight into the Radiology room and took some xrays. And there they were 4 or 5 little stones sitting in his tummy. But luckily they were small and should easily pass through without causing any problems. We advised his mom to keep an eye on his poops and make sure the stones which they duly did. We also advised he come in for a follow up X-ray 2 days later to check that the stones had been pooped out! Dear Larry arrived on time two days later and we went into the Radiology room expecting to see a clear X-ray......... BUT........... We came out from the X-ray room speechless, we showed his parents who were flabbergasted. Larry had been kept away from the pebble path but had somehow slipped past and eaten mouthfuls of the little pebbles. His poor parents now have to spend a fortune making a new "Larry Proof" Path form the house to the office. Our #supervet Dr Inke Helm recently had a successful surgery case for a wonderfully handsome cat called Kendall, who has been a long standing patient of ours here at Hillcrest Vet. Kendall has been suffering with Megacolon for years and was being medically treated for his condition but unfortunately, this year, as often happens with Megacolon, the medical treatment no longer works and surgery is the only other option. Dr Inke did a subtotal colectomy (removed the megacolon) with success! It has been 2 months since his surgery and we are happy to report that Kendall is back to his old mischievous self. 🥳🤩 What a beauty you are Kendall! 🐱 What is Megacolon? Megacolon in cats is a long-lasting condition where your cat’s large intestine is consistently stretched out more than it should be. It is usually filled with dried faeces causing entire constipation (obstipation) where your cat cannot pass any faeces. Usually, the colon functions by dehydrating, (taking water out of) digested food material. This creates faeces. If the food material remains in the colon for too long, it becomes extra dry and difficult to pass. As faeces accumulate, the colon stretches in size. Eventually, your cat’s muscles will become too strained to tighten the colon again, and the problem will begin to worsen, thus, eventually needing surgery. It feels like Christmas has only just begun to fade and now Easter is on our doorstep. With some extra days off and mild weather, this is a lovely time of year to enjoy the outdoors with your pets. We hope all our MediVet clients and their pets have a safe and happy Easter break. Please Remember, dogs are renowned for finding Easter eggs and what starts as a delicious treat can end up causing some serious problems. The problem is, dogs are not able to metabolise theobromine, a derivative of caffeine found in chocolate. Ingestion can lead to an increased heart rate, vomiting, diarrhoea, agitation, tremors, seizures and even death. Cooking and dark chocolate are the most toxic but ingestion of ANY chocolate can be a problem. Please also remember raisins are also toxic to dogs so make sure your dogs cannot get hold of any hot cross buns. Lilies are extremely popular around the world especially in beautiful bouquets we receive as gifts this time of the year. While their flowers are lovely to see and smell, lilies pose a significant safety threat for your cat. The entire lily plant is toxic: the stem, leaves, flowers, pollen, and even the water in a vase. Eating just a small amount of a leaf or flower petal, licking a few pollen grains off its fur while grooming, or drinking the water from the vase can cause your cat to develop fatal kidney failure in less than 3 days. Flash's very sore mouth. Dear Flash came to us a few weeks ago. He had just recently had some dental work done at another practice offering cheap dentistry but his owners wanted a second opinion because his mouth was obviously still very sore and he was not eating very well but the smell of his breath could quite literally clear a room🤢🤢🤢. Poor Flash's owners were told he had Feline Aids (which we confirmed with laboratory testing) and he had been given some steroids to help with the Aids but his mouth was just so very very painful for him. He was actually suffering from a syndrome called Gingivostomatitis, a serious disorder and something more common in cats with FIV; it causes lesions on the gums, tongue and lips and results in extreme pain that affects a cat’s ability to eat and drink. Although Flash had undergone dentistry under anaesthesia in January he still had teeth that were really unhealthy, he had pus down the side of his canine and gum recession with a lot of his pre-molars. We advised a FME (Full Mouth Extraction) as this would be the only way to make his mouth more comfortable. When he was asleep the full extent of the inflammation became evident (see Pic.) This condition is often caused by a abnormal immune reaction to possibly the plaque and bacteria in the cats mouth so by removing the teeth you remove plaque in the mouth too. We will be seeing Flash next week (it's quite funny as his brother is called Toothless🤣🤣). Oh Dear Todd 🙈🙈 Todd is a gorgeous boy with lots and lots of Energy. BUT Todd is also a bit clumsy especially when he runs around at high speed or when he is exiting cars 😜 A few years ago Todd took a nasty tumble down the stairs at home and damaged his shoulders. He was referred to see Dr Boyd at Hilton Specialist referrals for arthroscopy and surgery. After lots of rest and TLC Todd returned to his normal high speed self. A couple of weeks ago Todd jumped off the back of his Dad's Bakkie and landed very awkwardly. He really hurt himself and was brought in to see us as soon as we opened the next day. Poor Todd could not put any weight on his leg. He was admitted for X-rays straight away and we saw his problem immediately. Todd had a small bone chip that had fractured off of his shoulder. We referred him to Hilton Vet Hospital again to have a CT scan of his shoulder to find out if the fracture posed any risk of permanently damaging his shoulder joint. Luckily the bone chip is outside of his joint capsule and should not cause any further problems inside the joint. He was advised to rest and given pain medication ... and he is doing brilliantly! Beautiful Zara is now 100% kissable!!💋💋💋 Zara is now nine and has had a difficult life. She is an epileptic and to control her seizures she had to take very high doses of anti-seizure drugs which makes her a little dopey. But recently dear Zara started to display signs that her poor oral health was causing her quite a lot of pain. Not only was she in pain but her foul breath could clear a room. 🤢🤢🤢 Her devoted mum had serious concerns about brining her to us for dentistry as this would involve not only a visit to the vet but also a full general anaesthesia. Zara's seizure's are triggered by excitement and being a staffie she has ample enthusiasm even for the small things in life. After discussing our options with Zara's owner we admitted her for urgent dentistry. Poor Zara eventually had 35 - YES!!! Thirty Five teeth removed. Her teeth were all diseased, loose and broken and we only managed to save four teeth for her. Her poor owner was mortified!!! BUT......we knew just what an amazing recovery this dear sweet, excitable girl would make. She is a tough old girl and she healed beautifully. And yesterday we received this message 🥰🥰🥰 "My girlie is a new dog thank you xx She’s so kissable 😃😃" Not only is she managing to eat dry biscuits and she gets the occasional treat too. But best of all her mom has even managed to reduce the dose of her seizure medicine and she is feeling so much better!!! Dentistry at Medivet is done with meticulous attention to detail. Each dental involves up to 4 trained staff, a Vet, a Vet nurse and two really experienced veterinary assistants. As is standard in our practice we use gold standard anaesthesia and ensure that our patients are kept comfortable and pain free. Old man Jude's slip and fall! Jude is an old , but sprightly, 13 year old Weimaraner. He lives an amazing life on a farm and spends most of his time with his devoted dad. He loves car rides and running about the farm. Jude misjudged a jump and ended up doing the splits and he hurt his left back leg quite badly. We took some X-rays to check his hips and his knees as he was extremely painful on both. The X-rays showed a badly arthritic knee and we assumed his pain was due to him jarring this already damaged knee. We gave him some medication to help with pain and he was placed on strict instructions to rest. However the next day he was ten times worse. His leg had swollen up terribly and he was no longer trying to use his leg at all, his toes were bent over and he was in so much pain. He was admitted straight away and we ran blood tests and placed him on a drip so that we could give him extremely strong pain relief. We also called in our local Physiotherapist Paige from @equinelibriumkzn to come and do some treatments on his leg. Paige was at our practice within a few hours and he received Equimassage, Laser therapy, TENS and Fascia release. Paige also noted that dear Jude was extremely tense and sore in the muscles of his thigh and his Ileo Psoas muscle (In people we call this a groin strain) so we added a muscle relaxant to help with his pain too. The day after his treatment Jude started to use his leg and after his treatment on the second day he was well on his way to recovery. His leg was still very swollen but now that he was using his leg the swelling was slowly starting to recede. Old Jude is doing so well now. He goes for Hydrotherapy at EquineLibrium to build muscle in his leg and he is now using his leg and weight bearing fully. What a Brave old man. Brave little Emma came in on Friday for Eye surgery. Emma had was is called a cherry eye... Cherry eye in dogs is a condition where the gland of the third eyelid prolapses or protrudes out of its normal position. This gland plays a role in producing tears to lubricate the eye. When it protrudes, it typically appears as a red or pink mass in the corner of the eye, resembling a cherry hence the name "cherry eye." This condition can occur due to weakness in the connective tissue that supports the gland or inflammation within the eye. While cherry eye itself is not typically painful, it can cause irritation and discomfort for the dog. Surgery to reposition the gland and prevent recurrence is usually necessary to address the condition.
