The Beach Boys – Surfin' Safari (1962. Capitol) Surfin' Safari is a debut album by American surf pop rock band The Beach Boys from Hawthome, California. The band formed in 1961. and released their first 7˝ single „Surfin'“ in November 1961. and during the 1962. started working on their first album recording the songs through various studio sessions (April, August and September 1962.). Surfin' Safari was released in October 1962. by Capitol Records on vinyl. The album was produced by Nick Venet with the help of Brian Wilson who wasn't credited. The album contains 12 songs and the the band lineup was cosisted of Brian Wilson on vocals and bass guitar, Mike Love on vocals, Al Jardine on vocals, Carl Wilson on vocals and guitar, Deniss Wilson on vocals and drums & David Marks on vocals and guitar. Of 12 songs on the album, 9 were written by the band and 3 songs are covers. Brian Wilson was the main song writter on most of the songs with Mike Love co-writting 5 songs. Gary Usher was a songwritter, musician and producer who was a friend of the band and helped Brian with co-writting 6 songs on the album. Mike Love sang lead vocals on most of the songs on the album but other members also sang lead vocals on a few of the songs and the whole band sang the bands trademark harmony back vocals. When the album was released The Beach Boys were still developing as a band, they were still pretty new band and weren't experienced as some of their counterparts. This definitely shows through the album and while this album is not the strong as some of their later albums from their early period, it's still a fun record if you're into catchy surf rockin' pop.My favorite song is Surfin' Safari which already sounds like some of the later bands hits and classic songs with their trademark surfy pop rock sound. I also like Surfin' which is just a simple and fun tune. 409 is another one that I like, again a simple, fun and catchy song. The rest of the songs are cool but as I've said before, only few mentioned songs stands out. There's something about the first few Beach Boys albums that instantly won me over which is the simplicity, catchy melodies and overall positive fun summer atmosphere.

As part of our Friday life coaching program, the Surfpop children from Khayelitsha visited Chumisa, a community composting initiative in Khayelitsha who turn waste into nutrient-rich compost that helps local farmers practice sustainable agriculture. En kulen höstdag i början av 2000-talet åkte jag från min lantliga högstadieskola till den lokala skivaffären och köpte Robert Johnson and Punchdrunks samlingsskiva The Birdnest Years. Jag lär ha varit i 15-årsåldern och var totalt hänförd av gitarrljuden som spretigt och sprakande skapade nya världar. Denna unika ljudbild får mig fortfarande att förbluffas och längta mig bort. Det handlar inte om nostalgi utan snarare att eskapism. För några veckor sedan släppte Robert och hans gäng en tolkning av dansken Anders Trentemøllers Silver Surfer-låt. Gitarrerna är såklart i fokus, men mitt drygt 20 år äldre jag kan nu se storheten i helheten - den söndertrasade bastrumman, den skallrande basen och handklappen som låter som att en köksslev slås mot en ugnsplåt. It is hard to imagine the days that Surfpop was run solely by founder Daniel. I was the surf coach, teacher, mentor, driver and cook for the Surfpop children, about 11 children back then. In the morning I took Surfpop volunteers on tours around Cape Town and gave them surf lessons. I also prepared their breakfasts and dinners. While doing all of this for Surfpop, I also ran a hostel in Muizenberg. It was hard work and financially challenging. In those first years, there were months that I had to close the program and work in a coffee shop to make extra bucks.
