THE SCHOOL RUN MAY NOT BE FUN FOR PUPPIES Donโt get me wrong, some new puppies absolutely love the school run but itโs quite overwhelming for many others.ย Iโve got children so Iโve spent many years watching other parents bring their shiny new puppies on the busy school run and Iโve also had many puppies of my own.ย ๐ด It seems like a good idea as there are loads of people, dogs, traffic, bikes, scooters, child noises etc- we may think this is a perfect opportunity to โsocialiseโ our pup but it may not be. We want to expose puppies to the world they live in but without stress, we want do it at their pace.ย ๐ง On the school run there is so much going on that itโs overwhelming for many puppies. Too many hands reaching to say hi, narrow spaces with bikes and scooters and too many excited dogs leaping towards them by the school gate. Think about what the world looks like from their height- they are tiny in a sea of school shoes and scooters.ย ๐ If youโre not sure if your puppy actually enjoys it or not, watch their body language. ย Are they trotting along happily with you or are they lagging back? Can they eat treats or are they too overwhelmed to even eat? ย Give them space and time if you are unsure how they are coping- move them away to a quieter place and give them a break. ๐ถ We need to socialise at the pace of our own dog, exposure to too much stuff too soon is likely to be harmful rather than beneficial. We need to think about the age of pup and where they are emotionally, if they are 8-13 weeks old and this is their first experiences of the big wide world we risk them being scared as they may now be in a fear phase. The bit at the gate where children congregate in big groups and dogs may be tied up (and so more likely to react badly as they are restricted and stressed) has always been somewhere Iโve avoided as itโs the most busy and stressful bit by a mile.ย Please donโt rush with your tiny puppies, they absolutely need good socialisation and to meet lovely people and dogs but think about how you do it and build up over time without letting them get overwhelmed.ย #dogbehaviour #dogtraining #surreydogs #londondogs #reactivedogs #anxiousdogs

Well After 10 yrs from the 1st Dogfest, 2014, Basil & myself made it to the 10th one at 11 years of age. ๐๐พ๐ It was all about the Dogs! We had a lovely time at Dogfest near Guildford with friends On Saturday with Basil & our weekend boarding dog Milo. It was so lovely to meet so many different & gorgeous doggies. We didn't make it to the rescue meet up unfortunately. I hope it was super busy. I stocked up on lots of Pate treat tubes and natural goodies from jrpetproducts & a new #dickybag. Good quality Dogstrust umbrellas & poo bags. I had to make a visit to the @dogstrust stand since The Dogs Trust is a charity Basil's Doggie Daycare supports and Basil was a dogs Trust puppy from the Salisbury centre. This weekend we took things much slower than usually as Toby started limping on one of his legs and we have xray booked next week. We loooove our loooong weekend walks, but I must admit it has been lovely just to do local street walks and get more housework done. *WEEKEND UPDATE AND DISCOUNTED PHOTOSHOOT....* Unfortunately today was not the ending to the weekend I was hoping for, with Dogfest being cancelled due to the weather. I am not going to go into details on here but it was such a hard, disappointing and frustrating morning this morning. Months of planning, staying up late, working every hour possible and spending a lot of money is just some of the things that it takes to having a stall at a show. After a chat on a Surrey dog group on Facebook we decided to go to Ockham Common and Chatley Heath today. We started by popping in to @ockhambites for cake and a hot drink then set off across the wilderness. Tosh wanted to go the route we used to take before they cleared the trees (they're trying to make it revert to heath instead of woodland) but it wasn't easy to find. Then when we got to the tower he decided not to take the usual route to his stream, but of course he knew where to find it anyway. It's got even muddier than last time but he did go in today. Then he wanted to cross the road and visit Boldermere. And since it's his 5th gotcha day today he got his way. 2.5 miles in exactly 2 hours, but we do stop for sniffs a lot, and in places old 2 legs struggled on the terrain. ๐ ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฒ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ- Yesterday my awesome partner surprised me with tickets for @dog_fest I had no idea of his plans which made the surprise even sweeter I'd resigned myself to not being able to attend this year, what with dad in hospital with a broken hip and caring for mum my days are pretty full on visiting them both in opposite directions from my house. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. I think taking things slow, treating a dog with respect and listening to all the different stress signals goes a long way. Sometimes the best laid plans get messed up with people arriving at the wrong time (or even day) for their appointment. On this occasion we were able to swim all four dogs together as they are friendly and enjoy other dogsโ company in the pool. And we have a huge advantage too with having a 10m x 5m pool with separate resting places. The dogs Penny, Charlie, Sammy and Brock had an absolute BLAST!
