I remember that the first days after both of my girls were born were a whirlwind - we’d get to the end of each day and wonder what had happened! This sweet little was one almost a month old on the day of his session. A little older than the typical 5-14 days for newborn photography, but sometimes it just happens this way. By this age most babies are starting to spend much longer periods awake so they might be awake for more of the photographs, and some of the more 'curly' newborn positions might not be comfortable for them. Is two weeks too late for newborn photographs? Once you start researching posed newborn photography you’ll soon find that many photographers only offer newborn shoots for babies aged two weeks old or younger. In fact, you may find that some photographers prefer a tighter window, and will want to photograph your baby when they are under ten days old. So what happens when you’ve missed this two week window? Have your chances of some gorgeous, posed photographs of your new baby disappeared? The answer is no… After two weeks, babies will typically start to spend longer periods awake, uncurl, stretch out and grow larger. But it’s still very possible to create beautiful newborn and family photographs. At my older newborn sessions I photograph babies up to 8 weeks old, and will capture a mix of awake, sleepy and family photographs. The exact mix will depend on your baby and how sleepy or awake they are - it’s completely tailored to them. This little guy was 4 weeks old when I photographed him and we were still able to capture these lovely sleepy photographs. Want to know one of the secret ingredients for sleepy newborn photographs? It’s allowing plenty of time. Babies aren’t like adults…they can’t do what we need them to do for a photograph when we need it! So allowing plenty of time is a MUST at every one of my newborn sessions. We’ll usually spend a few hours together for your session, but I only spend a fraction of this time actually taking photographs. By allowing plenty of time we can pause for feeds, cuddles and nappy changes....whatever your baby needs. When it comes to newborn babies all the cliches are true - time flies, the days are long but the years are short, they don’t stay little for long.... Babies change and grow at an astonishing pace, and within a few weeks your tiny newborn won’t be so sleepy, and will be stretching their legs out, engaging with the world around them and perhaps even smiling! I typically photograph newborns when they are between 5 and 14 days old, very sleepy and love to be curled up like they were in the womb. This beautiful, precious stage doesn’t last long, so it’s really special to be able to capture it and ‘freeze’ it in time for my lovely clients. I’m often asked by parents “does our baby need to be asleep for the photos?” And for the kind of newborn photographs that I create the answer is...mostly yes. Whenever a new baby is awake, settled and relaxed during their session I’ll take some pictures of them awake too. But the reality is that most newborn babies aren’t relaxed and awake for long periods and often can be quite wriggly when they are awake! So most of the photographs you see are of sleepy babies. Some babies snooze right the way through their session. But more often than not, each baby will spend some time awake because they need a feed, cuddle, nappy change or just aren’t sleepy yet! Wondering when to book your newborn session? It might be sooner than you think! This gorgeous little guy was 12 days old on the day of his session, and this fell nicely into the 5 to 14 day window that is the ideal age for newborn photographs. In these early weeks babies are typically very sleepy and enjoy being curled up like they were in the womb. That means we can create sleepy, squishy newborn photographs, and capture all of the gorgeous little details that you see here. To make sure you secure a spot for your newborn session, it's best to book at least a few months before your baby arrives - right now I'm taking bookings for babies due between February and July 2024. When you make your booking, I'll take note of your estimated due date and ask you to notify me when your baby is born. We'll then confirm the exact date of your session when your baby is born. I only book a small number of newborn sessions each month, and this means that I can keep my diary nice and flexible. A lot of people think that being able to capture these curly newborn poses is all about a baby’s size. But in my experience a baby’s size doesn’t make a big difference to what we capture. The biggest factor is sleepiness. In the first two weeks after a baby is born they tend to sleep deeply and sleep a lot (although I know from experience that it doesn’t always feel this way as a new parent.) This deep sleep is exactly what we need to capture those curly, sleepy poses and that’s why the first two weeks are the best time for a newborn photo shoot. And a happy side effect of having the session so early is that we capture your little one at the very beginning of their story so that you can remember how perfectly teeny tiny they were....just like this gorgeous little girl ❤ Are you expecting a baby next year? Sometimes all you need are some gorgeous baby smiles to brighten up your day 🥰 This sweet little one was over a month old on the day of his session. A little older than the typical 5-14 days for newborn photography, but sometimes it just happens this way. By this age most babies are starting to spend much longer periods awake so they might be awake for more of the photographs, and some of the more 'curly' newborn positions might not be comfortable for them. Wondering when to book your newborn session? This gorgeous little guy was exactly one week old on the day of his session, and this fell nicely into the 5 to 14 day window that is the ideal age for newborn photographs. In these early weeks babies are typically very sleepy and enjoy being curled up like they were in the womb. That means we can create sleepy, squishy newborn photographs, just like the ones here. To make sure you secure a spot for your newborn session, it's best to book at least a few months before your baby arrives - right now I'm taking bookings for babies due between December 2023 and March 2024. When you make your booking, I'll take note of your estimated due date and ask you to notify me when your baby is born. We'll then confirm the exact date of your session when your baby is born. I only book a small number of newborn sessions each month, and this means that I can keep my diary nice and flexible. One of the things that lots of parents worry about before their newborn session is - what if my baby doesn’t sleep? And I get this completely. My first baby was a very awake baby, and it felt like she was awake all the time! I was very tired! But as I tell all of my clients - please don’t worry. Even if your baby is awake a lot of the time, we will still be able to capture some gorgeous, sleepy photographs of them. First of all, it’s good to remember that all babies have to sleep eventually. And newborn sessions are long to allow for exactly this kind of thing. The amount of time I need to take the newborn photographs is actually quite short, and once your baby is asleep I can work quickly. The session is long to allow for nappy changes, feeds, and times when your baby just wants to be awake. Second of all, there are lots of things we can do to make it likely that your baby is ready to have a sleep during the session. Wrapping, white noise, warmth and timing all help, and with a careful blend of all four we can help to make sure that baby is relaxed, happy and that they will, eventually fall asleep….just like this gorgeous little one did 😴 Are you expecting a baby in the next few months?
