I never claim to be the best at things. But even if I'm having a bad day or don't like the job or customer. I still do the best job I can. I fix a bunch of things from other 'shops', and this is the 5th motor from one in particular. I don't know the dude, or have ever met the dude. And I really don't know the whole situation. But I've seen a steady flow of similar bad workmanship from this place. This is the type of stuff that drives me nuts. Someone has beaten the flywheel with a steel hammer and on the pinion shaft side too. I don't expect everyone to understand, but those are both big time no no. It sucks having to charge people for jobs they already paid for, but it's not my fault. At least when they leave. They'll be done correctly. The bummed feeling of paying a high price for quality long fades over the feeling of cheap prices for poor quality and having to redo things over and over. Several of my bikes have been cracking down the road for over 20+ years with very little problems. My bike are proof my solid work, and solid upkeep. I know I don't make everyone happy, but the few that aren't pleased with their outcome has been operator issues or using subpar products and expecting high quality. It's always the blame game, and someone else's fault. 5 bolts a day. It's nice to visit feel like I'm getting results. This started off with a 'simple' case repair and trans swap, but turned into a whole overhaul. Yall know how it goes, while the motor and trans are out, let's paint it. No big deal, but turned out the frame was bend along with a whole list of problems. But it's all good. This is a total Johnny Cash panhead. 59 left case, 48 right case. 70 and later trans, so 70-72 longer sprocket shaft with small taper. Matched the cases up, 56-57 pinion shaft and bearing setup, and it's already had overhead oilers machined in, so now to figure out the best solution to that. Complete rebuilt motor and balanced. Turns over so smooth with nice compression and AB cam. Finish out the rest of the bike and wire it throughout the week with my 5 bolts are day philosophy and it'll be ready to rock n roll in short order. Perfect timing not that the texas death heat has finally left the conversion. It's always a nice feeling to accomplish certain things. Especially when others are always saying.... those parts are trash, you can't fix that, or your bike is junk. Ha ha ha. Adapt and overcome. We wasted the 114 motor this last outing, which we found the flaw and I'll fix over the winter. And blew a spark plug out of the 103 motor in Kansas last month. So I decided to just fix the 103 and put out back into service. Welded up the spark plug holes and built the weld up more so I can put long reach plugs in without spaces. Then figured I'd weld up the intake spickots so I can take out the spacers I made years ago. Funny. For a junk bike. This was all working pretty good for years. And even with the best parts, nitromethane will eventually beat it down. I'll keep my head up and moving forward. When twin cams came out. I was young and stubborn and refused to learn anything about them or work on them. So I chose to stick with what I knew. And that was shovelheads and panheads. So all my tooling, fixtures and machinery pretty much only accommodated these engines. The biggest bore was 3 13/16. My machine almost can't fit a big inch t/c cylinder. Punching out a 96ci to a 103cu. But Adapt and overcome. And the first cut is always extremely satisfying. And even though I hear the haters from other shops telling people in not qualified, I've always got a full house of work and multiple other shops bringing me their nightmares. After a couple dozen years of using half a hacksaw blade and thread file. I finally sucked it up and bought the reversed thread die for the 4 speed trans shaft. I can't even tell you how many hundreds of these I've had to fix from people beating the shaft end or cross threading these. About to start working the magic numbers on a 1948 panhead for mike glaze @glazetexas . It came in completely thrashed. But I've been slammed all year and slowly getting everything sorted out and fixed. Cylinders had to go up 2 sizes to get them back to round, valve guides were all egg shaped, and some welding on the heads. But a little more case work and then I can start actually putting it back together. Sometimes, Slow and steady wins the race. Most people hate doing the math, but I got no issues with it and I love watching my motors run smoother than most other 'motor builders'. Finally getting some head way on some work at the shop. This is one of the several motors the came in for smoking, knocking, and leaking motor problems. And turned out to be a complete rebuild. It's a 1976 ironhead, and this is the first time the motor has been apart. So it was all stock and original parts. They were of coarse all completely wasted. The metal had started peeling off the cam lobes, pinion shaft and everything else you can imagine. The bore was worn out to over .009 egg shaped. It's been a real mess but I love it when things start coming together. Balancing wheels always just makes me feel good. @chopper_nik and thanks to @art.ricardo.jojola and @fbi0300 for coming in and weighing motor parts. I always do my weights 3 times before final calculations. And between all 3 of us. Only 1.5 grams difference. After the last 2 years of having the same flat spot on the track, no matter what we changed. My buddy looked down and said.... This isn't the carb we were running for years. It was stolen with the bike. And clarity entered our conversation. I remembered that we hadn't ever modified the current carb like the old one. No wonder it always fell off at 450-500 feet no matter what we did. It would come back on with full force right at the finish line, but usually too late. We lost a whole bunch of races by only half a bike length. Even this last weekend. We picked up .250 on the 60 ft and .650 on half track but always falling off afterwards. Ugh... All the fuel lines and valves are huge but the actual carb inlets can't go any bigger and the motor wants more. With a little welding and machining, I made this little goodie. I measured the fuel bowl at @4 oz and added an extension with 5oz. And a longer jet tube. While waiting on parts on evey job, I figured I'd fire up my nitro bikes and start getting them ready for May's temple party drags. But that excitement was over shadowed with the excitement of the battery going POP!! No one really realizes how much abuse a starter cart takes on all the travels in the trailer. Last year, we had to get a couple new batteries on the fly at a race between rounds. They were a bit larger, which made good for starting, but were a slight larger than the trays. So the batteries have been kind of bouncing around in the cart without adequate support. Well, today we found out real quick that even though the cables look tight. They weren't. Ouch. But I guess that's way better than a pop in the motor and that melting down. So out for some new connectors and a battery. Try again tomorrow. During the shit weather. I did just lock myself up in the shop and worked on my 1951 chopped merc for a bit. This was a workout. But it's turned out quite nice. Building this car is real similar to a nitro Harley. Not a single thing works. Everything is cut and modified. But after a few meltdowns and a bunch of annoyances. I got it almost right where I wanted it. A few more things to finish but got to get back to money making work. My car and dragsters don't pay the rent no matter how much fun they are. Sitting on the ground, the door is right at my hip and the roof is right at my chest and still has the ground clearance I wanted. A couple of oldies I came across looking for something else. Almost 30 years ago. Mid nineties. Just getting out of high school and not doing anything else but riding around being carefree. I still have the same shovelhead chopper. Been beaten, wrecked, broken, blown up, and chopped several times. But still just as cool in my book. The Chevelle didn't fair as well. It lost a terrible battle with 2 telephone poles one rainy night. That was one of the biggest life changing events of my life. Sometimes you do things just because you can. This bike had been sitting in a Louisiana swamp for least the last 15 years. It's not anywhere as clean as it was when Howard wiggins @veetwin01 had it. But after talking with him and knowing the modifications that him and Bonnie truett made to the frame. It fits me way better than my little grasshopper. Rainy tornado days here in Texas lately. So I took this job and revived this week too. Showed up on 4 half heavy crates, to one super heavy almost complete motor. So clean, rinse, and repeat. Spent today working on something in my regular wheel house, but not at the same time. 1968 triumph Bonneville. But welding and machining is no big deal for me. My buddy was sick to his stomach when he broke his cases. But I kept trying him, don't worry. Fixed up the bore and decked the cylinder surfaces, and 6 broken bolts and warped primary side area. Making special tools is a never ending if you want to keep doing the the jobs right. Pinion bearing race driver. I always do multiple jobs at the same time so my brain is in the right place at the right time. I usually bore several sets of cylinders at the same time, build heads, flywheels, etc. So this morning, it's 3 cases with the same race damage. Took all day, but got a fender made and installed on the frame. I think it's not so bad for someone that doesn't hardly ever do sheetmetal work. Got froggy today and started putting my 92ci nitro ironhead back together. I had to fix a sportster bottom end for the Harley dealer today, and had another ironhead on my table being built. So I decided to slide mine into the rotation. It's been sitting done last November and It'll never get done if I don't get started. 5 bolts a day. Well holy shit. After a couple dozen years of honing cylinders with dry stones. I finally got around to building a table for my wet sunnen hone a couple weeks ago. Jeez. I can't believe i waited so long. This is such a smoother finish and doesn't seen to wear me out as bad. As well as the lack of breathing and tasting cast iron dust for days. Cylinders used to be the my nightmare I avoided until the last minute. Some of this old nitro stuff holds stories most couldn't even imagine. I can only guess what this ironhead cylinder has seen in it's life. A guy named Gary Bergman from South Dakota was pitted next to me at truett and osborn this year. We heard his motor running and getting ready for qualifier one, followed by a little pop. And it lifted the cylinder and trashed his case. He handed this off to me to sleeve. I'm about to start cutting it out and see a bunch of signatures engraved in the sides. If you know these people, you know what's up with these pictures. Pete Hill, Elmer trett, and fink racing. Then there's days that are very satisfying. Got this mess of a motor running the other day after sitting for 8 years. And of coarse it was knocking and banging, leaking and smoking everywhere. Had lost a wrist pin clip and valve springs were broke. So of coarse it was a metal mess throughout the motor. But it's always nice to have the tools and capabilities to do the job correctly. .030 over breather gear, better oil pump, and welded up some of the cracks in the case. Years to build and about 4 seconds of a ride before it was all blown out. But, I Spent all week welding and fixing my nightmares for a change. It's been a ton of welding, machining, welding some more and machining some more. But it should have a nice tight seal now. Between 2 full time jobs, Not sure if I'll have time to finish it up for this weekend but it's definitely close. The tanker vintage shovelhead fueler is good to go.
