When I booked a last-minute flight to San Antonio, I knew I couldn’t leave Texas without stopping in Austin to see a few special places first. You must know by now that I love cars and scary movies. Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Death Proof’ is the perfect culmination of the two, and it rocked my world when it came out in 2007. The cast, the stunts, the dialogue, the cars, and of course, the soundtrack, are all crafted together perfectly to create this masterpiece of a film. If you have not seen Death Proof by now, you are truly missing out on one of the best movies ever made. I first stopped at Texas Chili Parlor for a damn good cheeseburger and a ‘big-ass’ Long Island Iced Tea. My visit was completed with a trucker hat, bumper sticker, and a healthy dose of Chartreuse 💚 Fun Fact: the bartender told me the owner of the Texas Chili Parlor coined the phrase “the only liquor so good, they named a color after it” and gave it to Tarantino to use in the script 💚🐲. Quentin still visits TCP occasionally, too. Guero’s Taco Bar was next on my list. A few rounds of jalapeño margs with a lovely married couple at the bar made my last night in Texas quite memorable. Tuesday, May 30, 2023 Texas Chili Parlor Burger Night Just on a stroll between my office and Westgate Tower (my home) , with the Texas State Capitol in between, is one of those FEW remaining iconic, “old Austin” joints, The famous, in not infamous, Texas Chili Parlor. A true ICON of those “feel good” remaining places that always made Austin , well Austin….Dirty Martin’s, Sandy’s, to name others… The Chili Parlor first opened to the public in 1976, the year before Chili was named the official dish of Texas. Literally you can’t make these things up! So for these decades, there has been a constellation of “Lone Star” luminaries, that have included writers, POLITICIANS, artists, actors, Texas rascals, and famous, some not do famous musicians. In the MIX, I have for most of those years, known to make an unannounced appearance, requesting, yes, my regular table. Tuesday is famous Burger Night! So, tonight I arranged to meet friends for Burger Night, planning to order the Texas Chili Cheese Burger (no ,it’s NOT Macrobiotic here), with no cheese, chili on the side, at my regular table. WELL, I shocked everyone my ordering Guacamole and just a few chips. Literally they were in SHOCK. What no one in town realizes the Parlor makes one of the BEST guacamoles in all of Austin, maybe only second to the one Ken Richardson has his fabulous chef create every Wednesday at the elegant Austin Club. So I know two of the least expected places in Austin making the two best guacamoles!!!
