Boys on the Side. Village life in Uganda I know, I know, my pics recently are, quite literally, all over the map. Only cause I'm doing some file organizing and images like this one keep catching my eye. Needless to say, file organizing is not happening at a rapid pace😉 This one was a quick capture during a stop in a village en route to Bwindi for some gorilla trekking with @thegivinglens ! I love how all the kids run out to check out the buses passing through the villages😊 #TGLUganda #Uganda2017 #villagelife #Uganda 🇺🇬 #travelphotography #paulawallisphotography

I'm on a bit of a wildlife kick at the mo, working through various images I've shot in vastly different locales over the years. This one was captured last year while chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, Uganda with @thegivinglens . I love the moment captured between these two during a quiet grooming session in a patch of sunlight. But, as evidenced by the snare wire wrapped around the one's wrist, the bush meat trade is still alive and well in Uganda💔 #TGLUganda #thegivinglens #Uganda2017 #chimpanzees #primatelove #wildlifephotography #travelphotography #paulawallisphotography #canoncanada

Extremely grateful to have been able to go on this trip last year. I met some amazing people and got to reconnect with myself. Although there's still lots of self work to be done, this was a nice checkpoint in life that blew the dust off the path I forgot about so long ago. #tgluganda

You know what I loved the most about the kids I met in Uganda last September with #TGLUganda?? It's the attitude - they had a ton of attitude!! Good attitude of course, but it was so fun to see them so excited and to spend three days learning how to shoot, and how to pose!!! Whether taking the picture or being in the picture, these kids were full of attitude that just kept us all entertained. We should all be this excited and have this much attitude. . #TheGivingLens #Uganda #MyInstagramOfTheDay

Look at this adorable baby gorilla captured by @mskathyv during our Uganda workshop! ・・・ I know I just posted a picture of this cutie little gorilla baby 🦍 a bit ago, but it is just so damn cute I had to post another one. Never mind that when he/she grows up, it will be able to rip my arm out if it wanted to! I love how tenderly the mom gorilla holds the baby, she was so gentle with it as it climbed all over her, checking us out. #Gorillas #Uganda #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #MyInstagramOfTheDay

I love this shot of the little baby gorilla (3 months old!) and his mom. Right before this, the little guy was walking over to Mom, stopped, took a look at all of us looking at him - then stood up and beat his little chest before running over into the safety of his mom's arms. I was so amazed just seeing him so close, probably wtihin about 5 feet as he walked by, that I totally missed the shot. But I will never forget it. #Uganda #MountainGorillas #TheGivingLens #TGLUganda #MyInstagramOfTheDay

Another fun picture from #Uganda. One thing that I see no matter where I travel is that kids love #Selfies. I can be in my yard with my grandkids or across the world in Cambodia or Uganda - and the kids all love selfies. They don't even have to speak English, but they know "Selfie". This is my good friend @michaelbonocore with a gaggle of kids. If we had longer arms, we'd be able to get even more kids in these pictures!! #TheGivingLens #TGLUganda #MyInstagramOfTheDay

Another fun photo from Uganda. This is “T”... I had a chance to work with T for a few days teaching him photography. While we had lots of donated 📷 cameras, the kids also wanted to use our cameras. It was hard to hand it over, but I did let them look at it and shoot a few shots as long as they stayed close and kept the strap around their neck!!!! Fortunately they all did really well and no damage done. #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #MyInstagramOfTheDay

The highlight of 2017 for me was certainly my trip to Uganda 🇺🇬 in September. I have posted a lot of my more formal photos, but I was browsing through some iPhone pictures and was reminded how much fun Portrait mode is on that camera. This shot was taken with the depth effect turned on, and I just love the way it came out. The kids we spent time with were so awesome and they were such great subjects. So I decided tonight to share something off of my phone. This little boy looks so serious in this, but a few moments later he was chasing Colby or Michael all over, laughing and playing. . #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #Uganda #BeaconOfHopeUganda . #MyInstagramOfTheDay

So many feels. It's hard to sit and go through the images from this trip without being impatient about the next one. Remembering the friendships made, the memories that seem so long ago, and the way life has changed since then makes me yearn for the next chance to give up what has been for all that can be.

G'rilla Hands! I just love looking at their hands. So expressive and humanesque. Beautiful and fascinating. I once had a Gibbon sit beside me at a wildlife refuge in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. He inched closer to me, lay his head on my lap, and took my hand in his dry, leathery, yet human-like hand. I sat there for ages, not moving, hardly breathing. I didn't want to startle him and make him let go. I can imagine the feeling of holding a gorilla's hand. Something on my imaginary bucket list that I suspect I will never check off. I'm ok with that though. I got to hang with these guys❤ #gorilla #uganda #africa #TGLUganda #thegivinglens #paulawallisphotography @thegivinglens

The big attraction going to Uganda (besides working with the kids!) was Gorilla Tracking. But, we ended up also doing Chimpanzee trekking in the Kibale Forest National Park. This was as exciting as the gorillas, so if you find yourself in Uganda, be sure to do both expeditions!! . One big difference between Gorilla trekking and Chimp trekking is that the chimps move further and faster than the gorillas, and the guides track them using sound. I have a (bad) video of running through the woods chasing the amazing sound of the chimps yelling at each other. . The Chimps were fascinating - the moms and babies stayed up in the trees, but the big guys all hung around on the ground. In this picture, you can see how close we could get to them and how calm they were. . #Uganda #Chimpanzee #Kibale . #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens . #MyInstagramOfTheDay

It is #InternationalDayOfTheGirl today. I want to celebrate the young women in Uganda that I met on my recent trip with The Giving Lens. Our group had visited a local school, and this group of girls was going to be performing for us. I had a chance to hang out with them before the performance and talk to the girls for a few minutes. This was a very typical group of teenage girls - giggling and laughing at these strangers who came to visit them, and at each other. They were so enthusiastic and interesting. I asked one of the girls what she was going to do with her schooling, and she quickly told me "I want to be a laywer". I asked the next girl what she wanted to be when she was done with school - she wanted to be an Architect. Next girl - an Engineer. Last girl - a Pilot!!!!! I was so happy to see these girls shooting for the moon. I told them all to keep up their schooling and don't let anyone stop them from achieving their dream, that Uganda needed young women with ambition to make their country a better place for their families. And they could dance too!!!! You go girls... I'm rooting for you! #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens

More from #Uganda. Here I am taking a break from walking around, with a bunch of the kids from the school we worked with. One of the kids i was working with took this shot, she did a great job!!! #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #MyInstagramOfTheDay

One of the reasosns I took this picture is because of something I learned in Uganda. I learned that there are not a lot of older people in the country. It's a very young country, primarily because a lot of the older generations have died from AIDS. You could see some older folks on the trip but once it was mentioned, I definitely noticed way more kids than seniors. This nice lady was out for a stroll through the village when we all walked past her, and she let us take her picture as we walked together. #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #MyInstagramOfTheDay

More from 🇺🇬 Uganda. This man picks tea 🍃 for a living. It looks like a very hard job, and he does it for almost no pay. MIgrant workers in the U.S. make more money than this young man. Yet he does his job very fast, and very well, knowing which leaves to pick and which leaves to ignore. He moves quickly through the field, filling up his backpack with good tea leaves. In the 15-20 minutes that we watched this young man, he worked his way steadily through the bushes, never slowing down and rapidly filling the basket. I would suck at this job. . #Uganda #PickingTea #TheGivingLens #TGLUganda #MyInstagramOfTheDay

One of the things I saw on my recent #Uganda trip was how young children had to take care of even younger kids while the parents were at work. It's a lot of responsibility, but my impression is that the responsibliity is thrust on them at an early age, and they handle it. We saw kids as young as 4-5 years old taking care of younger siblings. Having a school environment where they can be around other kids with some adult supervision is so good for these kids. The importance of schools for all kids (not a guarantee) is something I took away from my trip. . #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #MyInstagramOfTheDay

We watched this fisherman while we were out on our boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth Park. We pulled up next to him and saw that he had only caught two fish. You can see them down in the bottom of the boat, right by his flip flop. I asked him if the fish were in the water so that they stayed fresher until he could eat them. He looked at me very calmly and said "nope, just a leaky boat" 😳 . I think those are tilapia, but they could also be catfish. Either way, that was a heck of a lot of work paddling this boat in that water with up to 500 hippos in the water too!!!!! But you do what you have to do in order to feed your family. It was an eye opener for me. . #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #Uganda #Fishing #MyInstagramOfTheDay

My "before and after" shots from Gorilla 🦍 Trekking. These two wonderful gentleman were my Porters for our trekking trip. They are the ONLY reason I made it!! They carried my gear, and kept me from falling on my ass the whole time we climbed down, then pushed my ass back UP the hill after!! They were awesome, and without their help (and some additional ass pushing from my friend @jmulson 😂) this would have been a much tougher and less enjoyable experience. #ButIDidntNeedTheAfricanAmbulance #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #MyInstagramOfTheDay

Another cool thing we did on our Uganda trip was to participate in a Chimpanzee Trek. We walked through the woods for about a half hour until we found these amazing creatures. At first, we just saw them up in the trees, traveling through the forest canopy. But after a bit of chasing them around, we found a group of 6-8 chimps all hanging out on the ground. They were so comfortable with us that they let us take their pictures fore about an hour!!! I think this guy was as curious about me as I was about him!!!! This was one of the highlights of the trip - being within 4-5 feet of these gorgeous creatures, who shared their rest time with us. #TGLUganda #TheGivingLens #Uganda #ChimpTrekking #Chimpanzee 🐒 #MyInstagramOfTheDay

"Connection" I'm still mentally processing this experience. And I could sit here forever in a paralysis of indecision over which images capture the emotion I felt, witnessing these awe-inspiring creatures moving about in their natural mountain habitat. Or, I could just....share them with you. This is one of the Silverbacks of the Bitikura Group. We trekked through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda to reach them, with the assistance of our guide, trackers, and porters, and were allowed to quietly watch them for one hour. That one hour was worth all the long-haul flights, crazy long (and crazy bumpy) bus rides, and hard trekking through dense jungle just to sit in their presence. So much gratitude for this experience. #TheGivingLens #GORILLAS! #TGLUganda #paulawallisphotography @thegivinglens
