One of the performers today will be San Diego native and Brooklyn transplant, Keomi Tarver @abundancewithkeomi !!! • 💃🏽🩰 Keomi is a dynamic performer, Artistic Holistic Healer, and Divine and Spiritual dancer. She began training at the age of 12 and is skilled in Modern Dance, West African, Hip Hop, and interpretive dance. Throughout the last decade, Keomi Tarver has performed on stages for more than 20,000 people at Amber Rose’s 2017 Festival, led private classes with celebrity clients including supermodel, Ashley Graham, taught dance classes for brands such as Nordstrom and Aerie, and has delivered over 100 workshops across the country. Keomi has also showcased her work on various stages and respected institutions including San Diego City College, San Diego State University, Yale University, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and SummerStage. Keomi is the Founder and Master Facilitator of AbunDANCE with Keomi®, which serves a global community of teen and adult performers, wellness enthusiasts, and corporate partners through wellness retreats, private sessions, and customized learning experiences. Her art expands and transforms ways of thinking and living and encourages her community to heal, create, live, and love abundantly. One of the performers today will be Imani Wiley-English, from Columbia, South Carolina!! 🎼🎵 • 🎤🎶 Imani is a vocalist, cellist, & songwriter. Her unique tone and style can be classified as neo-soul and R&B. Although having been influenced by artists such as Beyoncé, Jazmine Sullivan, Yebba, & John Legend, Imani projects a sound that identifies as none other than herself. She earned her BA degree in Music Performance with concentrations in cello & voice from Columbia College of S.C.  Her business, Wiley-English, LLC, was established to focus on music artists and their publishing rights. While she performs at events and open mics around her city, Imani is continuing to put her talents in the studio having recently dropped her debut single, “A L W A Y S” on April 23rd, 2024 available on all streaming platforms. Flemming’s lawsuit against the bus company played an important role later in the Parks case. ⚖️ • Local civil rights activists heard of the ordeal and enlisted attorney Phillip Wittenberg, a white attorney in Columbia, to represent her. The case was appealed twice, and for the third trial, Lincoln Jenkins, Jr. and Matthew J. Perry represented Ms. Flemming and the jury quickly found in the bus company’s favor, but by that time the Montgomery bus boycott and the decision in Browder v. They then discovered Madam CJ Walker, the first black woman millionaire who revolutionized hair products. • To cap off our day, we had a guest speaker, Ms. Porsha, the owner of her salon WAY2Kinky, specializing in natural hair care. She engaged in conversations about hair care and answered the burning questions the girls had. Join the Black Girls’ Clubhouse in recognizing her this Black History Month! 🎤✨ • Simone was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, composer, arranger, and civil rights activist. Her music spanned styles including classical, folk, gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and pop. 🎶 • The sixth of eight children born into a poor family in North Carolina, Simone initially aspired to be a concert pianist. 🎹 With the help of a few supporters in her hometown, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She then applied for a scholarship to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where, despite a well received audition, she was denied admission, which she attributed to racism. In 2003, just days before her death, the Institute awarded her an honorary degree. • To make a living, Simone started playing piano at a nightclub in Atlantic City. She changed her name to “Nina Simone” to disguise herself from family members, having chosen to play “the devil’s music” or so-called “cocktail piano”. She was told in the nightclub that she would have to sing to her own accompaniment, which effectively launched her career as a jazz vocalist. She went on to record more than 40 albums between 1958 and 1974, making her debut with Little Girl Blue. She released her first hit single in the United States in 1958 with “I Loves You, Porgy”. Wilson played for the South Carolina Gamecocks in college, helped lead the Gamecocks to their first NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship in 2017, and won the NCAA basketball tournament Most Outstanding Player award. 🏀💪🏾 • In 2018, she won a record third straight SEC Player of the Year award, leading South Carolina to a record fourth straight SEC Tournament Championship, becoming the all-time leading scorer in South Carolina women’s basketball history, and was a consensus first-team All-American for the third consecutive season. Wilson swept all National Player of the Year awards (Wade, AP, Honda, USBWA, Wooden, and Naismith) as the best player in Women’s College basketball for 2018. During her early career, Baker was among the most celebrated performers to headline the revues of the Folies Bergère in Paris. 💃🏽 • Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she renounced her U.S. citizenship and became a French national after her marriage to French industrialist Jean Lion in 1937. She raised her children in France and aided the French Resistance during World War II as a spy!! • Baker, who refused to perform for segregated audiences in the United States, is noted for her contributions to the civil rights movement. She wrote, “It is now an established fact that the lack of a knowledge of the history of black Americans does harm not only to blacks but to whites as well. A lack of black history leaves the white student only half educated in American history, and only half prepared for the American future.” Her dedication continued when she integrated Dreher High School as its head librarian in 1968. 🤎 Happy Black History Month! 🤎 Did you know about the remarkable achievements of Matilda Arabella Evans? 🎉👩🏾‍⚕️ • Evans was an absolute trailblazer, becoming the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine right here in South Carolina! 🎓🩺 Her passion for improving healthcare for African Americans, especially children, truly makes her a shining star in history!! 🌟✨ • As the first African American woman licensed to practice in South Carolina, Evans was able to treat both white and black patients, causing her services to be in great demand. She built up a large clientele of wealthy white women, who paid her sufficiently to allow her to treat poor black women and children for free. She practiced obstetrics, gynecology, and surgery, and cared for patients in her own home until she established the Taylor Lane Hospital and Training School for Nurses, the first black hospital in the city of Columbia, in 1901. • Evans believed that health care should be a citizenship right and a governmental responsibility, much like education. In 1916, Evans created the Negro Health Association of South Carolina and two years later in 1918 she volunteered in the Medical Service Corps of the United States Army during World War I. 🤎 Happy Black History Month! 🤎 Did you know about Elizabeth Evelyn Wright?! Wright was a true trailblazer, humanitarian, and educator. She dedicated her life to breaking down barriers and providing educational opportunities for Black children. • Wright founded Denmark Industrial Institute in Denmark, SC, as a school for African-American youth. It is present-day Voorhees College, a historically black college (HBCU). • In 1888, she matriculated at Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute as a night student. After two years, Wright moved to Hampton County, SC, to assist in a rural school for Black children. After the school was burned, she returned to Tuskegee and graduated. • Wright started several schools in the area of Denmark, but they failed due to arson, jealousy, or other reasons. Wright started a night school for Black men in Hampton County. In 1897, she moved to Bamberg County, SC and started a school with the support of some influential people in the community. She raised money for what she called Denmark Industrial School, modeled after Tuskegee Institute. Philanthropists Ralph Voorhees and his wife, donated $5,000 for the purchase of land and construction of the school’s first building. In 1902, Voorhees Industrial School opened for male and female students at elementary and high school levels, and Wright was principal. For years this was the only high school for Black people in the area! The school was later affiliated with the Protestant Episcopal Church and eventually became a fully accredited four-year college. • ✨ Elizabeth Evelyn Wright’s legacy as an educator and humanitarian is truly remarkable. Let’s take a moment to celebrate her incredible talent and contributions this Black History Month! ✨✨ • Brunson is a true inspiration, breaking barriers and making waves in the entertainment industry. Brunson is best known for creating, executive producing, co-writing, and starring in the ABC comedy series Abbott Elementary. Brunson gained prominence for her self-produced Instagram series Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date. She went on to produce and act in content for BuzzFeed Video, and developed two streaming series with BuzzFeed Motion Pictures. • At the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, she became the first Black woman to be nominated three times in the comedy category, receiving nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (which she won), Outstanding Comedy Series (as an executive producer), and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. At the 75th ceremony, she became the first Black woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy in over 40 years. Brunson was also honored with a 2022 Peabody Award for her work on Abbott Elementary. She was an American author who is considered the first African American author of a published book of poetry! • Born in West Africa, she was kidnapped and subsequently sold into slavery at the age of seven or eight and transported to North America, where she was bought by the Wheatley family of Boston. After she learned to read and write, they encouraged her poetry when they saw her talent. • With the 1773 publication of Wheatley’s book “Poems on Various Subjects”, she became the most famous African on the face of the earth. She was honored by many of America’s founding fathers, including George Washington, who (after she wrote a poem in his honor) wrote to her that “the style and manner [of your poetry] exhibit a striking proof of your great poetical Talents.” • Although Black literary scholars have critiqued Wheatley’s writing, noting the absence in it of her sense of identity as a black enslaved person, Wheatley worked hard and paved the road for future Black authors and poets - representation is important! • Join us in commemorating this extraordinary woman’s contributions throughout Black History Month. 🤎 To honor Black History Month, BGCH is bringing back our “Did You Know?” segment where we honor African American trailblazers. 🤎 🤎 Did you know about Eunice Roberta Hunter Carter? She was one of New York’s first African American female attorneys and one of the first African American prosecutors in the U.S. She was active in the Pan-African Congress and the U.N. committees to advance the status of women in the world. During her time as a prosecutor, she put together a massive prostitution racketeering case that eventually implicated Mafia boss Lucky Luciano - this was a landmark in legal history as it was the first against a major organized crime figure for anything other than tax evasion. • Eunice Roberta Carter broke major barriers and paved the way for future generations by becoming a trailblazer in the legal profession.
