Vorige week stuurde een vriend een stukje interview van een ex- voetballer en nu singer songwriter; Bjórn van der Doelen. Mijn gedachten vlinderden naar het kleine optreden van hem onder een hooibergdak op ons eigen 'Boerol' festival, hier in de polder destijds. Hij vertolkte daar ook, voor mij heel verrassend, een prachtig liedje van James H Shelton dat ik het eerst hoorde van Nina Simone, ik was het kwijt geraakt in mijn hoofd. En nu, toen ik het krantenartikel onder ogen kreeg, zocht ik weer naar dat ene liedje. Ik plukte gisteren seringen, liet me verleiden door hun geur en die wil ik dan altijd in die ene jugendstil vaas, de rest van het jaar staat zij nutteloos in de kelder stilletjes af te wachten. Hoe krijg je seringengeur op de foto? Ik heb het geprobeerd. Het is bedwelmend, een beetje van vroeger en het maakt dat je helder wordt in een waas van mist. Kan dat, heldere mist? Ja, want wat gebeurde er?! Het liedje begon te zingen in mijn hoofd....lilac nights......lilac wine! Hebbes. Jeff Buckley heeft ook een goede versie gemaakt. I want students to see how Americans reacted to the war as it trudged through the decades. There is also a strong connection to the Civil Rights Movement, which we studied this year, and I think it helps students see that major historical events don’t happen in isolation.
