Made 4 or 5 years ago, in loving tribute to the show Supernatural. We used a store bought little foam skull; and crafted the wings out of chipboard and foam putty. Another one inspired by that churchyard in Aldbourne. The original stone looked to have been broken in half, and the top half stuck down in the earth at an angle. The floral element was another example of layering cutouts of chipboard, and then layering foam putty over it. Also from the 2019 batch. I wanted to make a simple stone and then just make it look really really old and decayed. I used a heat gun and granite to age the surface. I really went to town on all the moss and lichen. I wanted it to look like something you would find with a handful of other stones, deep in the woods and forgotten. Definitely the tallest one I have done so far! It’s based on a stone we saw in the churchyard at Aldbourne, England. (An exciting place if you’re a fan of 1970s Doctor Who 🤓) i didn’t get the stone color right at all, but the color and appearance of the lichen on it is a good match. This was engraved pretty simply and cleanly with a dremel, and then I aged the hell out of it with acetone, as well as working at the surface with a rough piece of granite. It was so, so much fun, and the effect was satisfying once it was all painted. I really get into doing these lichen patterns! This one is from 2016, when Gretel died. I wanted to make a marker to honor her and all the good dogs we have to say goodbye to. This year, I put it out in front, in honor of Lenny. It’s our first Halloween without him and we really miss him! The carving on this one is almost all knifework, with a little solvent to degrade the broken areas. The dog figure at the top was cut out in multiple layers of chipboard; maybe 4 deep. These were the first tombstones we made, several years ago. The first one is sort of like markers we saw in Germany, the cross with the little roof over it. Last year I freshened up the paint and added the skull and ivy, which takes it in a whole other direction. Anyone have a great material to make long lasting tombstones? 💀🎃🧟♀️⚱️⚰️😵 I made these tombstones about 4 years ago and they haven’t fared very well. The main material is insulation foam glued together with mod podge and covered with latex based drylock. I love making big items out of the insulation foam cuz it’s so easy to cut, sand and lift, but I’m looking for a better sealant. The drylock seals well but doesn’t supply a durable outer rim. A few have been punctured or have had pieces broken off. Very happy with how this one has ended up! I wish I could go into a live layer filter and pull back the lichen by 5-10%, but then I remember this is handwork!
